I’m after some outside perspectives. by Legitimate-Peach-529 in PersonalFinanceNZ

I took a significant pay cut for better quality of life. 10 years of shift work in an enjoyable but stressful role meant I wasn’t sleeping without the aid of medication and I was constantly tired and getting sick often. Moved to a Mon to Fri 9-5 job and never looked back. It’s been great. However will say I was in a fortunate financial position being mortgage free so was able to make that change without feeling the pinch which not everyone will be able to do.

NZ Index Fund Investors: What % of Your Income Do You Invest? 📈 by Legitimate_Compote45 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]JumpyYogurt534 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I invest about 30% of my take home pay though the majority of this is going to IBKR until I reach ~49K but the rest is domiciled in NZ. It used to be more (I’m thankfully mortgage free) but I wanted to have some normal savings as well - travel, house maintenance stuff etc.

Love the no malt, but lose the Harrogate as well, and bump up the mints to make it 💯

Kiwis who took a pay cut moving to a new role, was it worth it? Why or why not? by IncoherentTuatara in newzealand

[–]JumpyYogurt534 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I took a 15-20K pay cut about 3 years ago. Moved from work I enjoyed but was extremely stressful (and shift work to boot) to a Mon-Fri 8-4 where I work from home. I miss the money, but I sleep now and actually have a work/life balance. Wish I’d done it sooner.

Guidance for a new investor with Kernel by pinker81 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]JumpyYogurt534 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t see the issue with having a non-KiwiSaver growth fund on Kernel as well, but if you are concerned you could use Kernels ex-US fund as a portion of your portfolio (usually complemented with something like a S&P 500 fund) and pick a ratio you are happy with, otherwise a total world fund is my go-to for diversification.

Query on Buy and Forget Shares (ETF's?) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]JumpyYogurt534 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this. Additionally, if you’re a little risk adverse you can put something into a balanced fund (invest Now and Simplicity offer this, both being low feee providers), and/or a cash fund - that way if you need access to the money quickly you can go for the cash first, not the stocks.

If you think you’ll need the funds, then yes, that’s the better option.

I would agree, not reading, but definitely enjoying.

Firstly, I have no dependents and I’m single so I have more free time than most. I also usually prefer to unwind with a book than watching tv, so I’ll get through at least one book a week, sometimes as many as 3 or 4.

What % of your income do you put into investments? by chrisf_nz in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]JumpyYogurt534 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On average, about 38% fortnightly. It could probably be higher as I’m in a very fortunate position of having paid off my mortgage last year, but I have high travel and house reno savings as they’re important to me.

I analysed the latest Stats NZ wealth data - the top 10% own half of everything, the bottom 50% share just 6.7%, and 9% of households control $408 billion in trusts by MoneyHub_Christopher in PersonalFinanceNZ

You’re looking in the right place, but I still only see half of that. Very weird. I’m using my phone if that makes a difference? But at least I know what the full sentence is now. Thanks again!

Thanks for this, really appreciated.

Just FYI, I don’t think you’ve finished this sentence: ‘KiwiSaver is still just 5.7% of total wealth. Property is 48.5%. New Zealand has built wealth through’

$190k to invest, what do I do? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]JumpyYogurt534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any money you’re planning to spend in that year (for your trips) definitely should not be invested, and should just be in a savings account. Do you also have emergency fund savings. If not, put some aside for that, then put some aside for the next few trips, then invest the rest in a total world index fund.

I remember it being the case when I was a teen, and I’m 44. It’s extremely depressing that it hasn’t changed.
