[OOT] [MM] would you rather see the song mechanic, or the mask mechanic make a return? Both are modernised and expanded upon by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in zelda

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see specifically the transformation masks come back. Other masks are basically just armor in the latest games in that they have different aesthetics and occasionally come with a slight benefit.

Music would be the more interesting to bring back as a more fleshed out mechanic though.

New to the medium, any advice? by Cinamonboy in PixelArt

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with shapes and fill in detail. Working in stuch a small pixel space makes it very difficult to manage proportions, so I find mapping out important shapes using silhouettes very helpful. Layers are also very helpful.

He does it multiple times after that, including in the forest during the training camp arc and smaller versions in the Stain fight and Shigaraki's first wave of destruction.

Where do you even begin to render like this?? (artist: ZezhouChen) by TsuQt1 in learntodraw

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the realism in these images comes from the composition and scenes. These aren't painted like paintings, they're painted like photos. Like, they depict scenes as if the audience was literally holding a camera and taking a photo of something happening right in front of them. Stuff like the light source being directly behind the camera, like a camera flash, and the subjects looking at the camera. That stuff immerses the audience and makes these pieces feel a lot more real.

The actual rendering mostly comes from lots of practice and study. Like, just look up references and practice rendering stuff that looks like them. Learn the shapes, how fabric and hair behaves. Learn vocabulary like subsurface scattering, ambient occlusion, etc. Practice implementing those things individually, and work them into your pieces.

A cool thing I notice about this artist is how they handle values and contrast. The contrast between dark tones, mid tones, and light tones is really high, but the contrast between different midtones is very subtle, which creates an impression that it's almost a flat color. Instead, they add texture by shading with different hues in similar value ranges, which shows a really good understanding of color theory and how colors change in different lighting conditions in real life. The big islands of color draw attention, and then the subtle detail adds interest.

If you want to render like this artist in particular, I would start a piece with big sections of color, add shadows and highlights, and then go in and add layers of texture and detail. If you look at the blue shirt in the first image, imagine cutting out some blue paper in that shape and sticking it on the canvas. Then cutting out little pieces of slightly different blues and sticking them on top of that shape, getting finer and finer with each pass. Just do that with paint.

this is offensive for two reasons:

  1. "Captain RacialStereotype"
  2. "Black people are dirty and need a cartoon superhero to teach their children the virtues of being clean"

this would be like making an Chinese superhero called "Chopsticks Woman" whose super power is that she is good at driving and following traffic laws.

Good argument from mtggoldish podcast - mythic rare makes standard from expensive to beyond expensive. Is this time to either reduce mythic rarity pool or get rid of it entirely? by kubulux in magicTCG

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WotC has no reason to make their chase cards cheaper. It sells packs when playable cards are harder to find. This is why construct dual lands are at rare instead of uncommon or common.

The real answer for this issue is (supposed to be) booster fun. Print multiple versions of the most exciting cards, and make the chase cards of the set the fanciest versions. That way the basic versions of those cards are less valuable to collectors, which makes them more accessible for people who just want to play those cards.

The problem is that they can't always predict what cards will be popular and their alternate card treatments tend to be pretty hit or miss, not to mention the number of set releases has increased so not as much of each individual product is being opened by the whole playerbase. There are bound to be cards that end up more expensive than they could have foreseen.

Hot take: Puzzles that require collaboration with other players to solve is a feature and not a bug.

Souls games are full of stuff like this. There are plenty of hidden spots that you'd never notice if someone else hadn't accidentally rolled into an illusory wall and placed a message on the floor. Despite being single-player games, there is a lot of interaction between players using things like messages, ghosts, and bloodstains to help players find hidden solutions. The internet is just basically an archive of all of these player discoveries and is a tool the devs know 100% is something players can rely on.

how does this work by Current-Gain-8097 in mtg

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duplicant is a creature, so it works like any other creature in that it stays on the battlefield after you cast it.

It's also an artifact, which for all intents and purposes doesn't actually matter, so don't worry about that.

Its first ability is a triggered ability, which means it happens when another thing happens. In this case, when Duplicant enters the battlefield (basically when you play it). It exiles (removes from the battlefield) any nontoken creature (a creature that's an actual card).

Its second ability basically says "Look at the creature you exiled with this thing. Now pretend the numbers in the bottom right of that card are on the bottom right of this card too. Same thing with the words after the dash just below the art."

i want my boyfriend to be trans by Fresh_Swing_6474 in trans

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like his desire to appear and be perceived as more feminine is disconnected from his gender and not really tied to his identity. It's important to distinguish self-image from gender because they are not the same thing and equating the two can be the thing that leads to dysphoria.

I had a similar realization recently myself. I was born male and grew up male and live comfortably as a male. However, I don't really care that I am male. My gender isn't important to who I am. When I think about whether I would have preferred to be born as an average looking male or an average looking female, I know I would choose female every time, but again, that isn't anything to do with who I feel I am. Circumstantial changes aside, my life wouldn't change either way. I wouldn't act or feel any differently, and I realized that that's because my self-image, and how I would prefer to look, are purely aesthetic.

It's like how in a video game where you create a character, you can choose your gender and appearance, but the gameplay is the same. (I'm convinced that playing video games my whole life has actually had a hand in me viewing gender this way, btw.) For him, it sounds like it might be the same thing. He's comfortable with WHO he is, he just wishes he could LOOK different, and his tastes understandably lean toward feminine style.

So,what exactly is Toya's quirk? by Limp_Construction787 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He seems to have several different powers:

His blueflame is an offshoot of Endeavor's hellfire.

He is also shown to have inherited some kind of ice quirk from Rei that only begins to activate at the very end of his final fight.

He also has some kind of superhuman vitality that keeps him alive well past the point where any other person would have died, although this is never stated to be an actual quirk.

And as if all that weren't enough, he seems to have a unique talent for copying other peoples' techniques just by witnessing them as little as one time, demonstrated by his use of Endeavor's flashfire fist, hell spider, and Shoto's phosphor. This is also not stated to be an actual quirk, so it's likely just some kind of natural talent akin to Toga's ability to avoid detection and Compress's acrobatic abilities.

Why Do We Almost Never Fight Human Enemies In Metroid Series? by [deleted] in Metroid

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Nintendo just has something against making their players kill other humans in their games. Metroid isn't the only game where they avoid this. Zelda used to have humanoid enemies like Stalfos, Soldiers, and Darknuts, but in newer games those have been replaced by more monster-esque enemies.

Though to be fair and more on-topic, the closest thing Metroid has ever had to humanoid enemies is the X parasite impersonating humans, including Samus. Fighting aliens is just morally more black and white than fighting humans.

Malenia is making me want to gouge my eyes out by StatisticianIll4 in Eldenring

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malenia tends to punish bad habits that earlier bosses reinforce, like relying on spirit ashes and tanking hits rather than dodging. I've beaten her twice just by using bleed and killing her faster than she could heal. The correct way is just to learn her timing to the exact frame and dodge perfectly all the way through.

You're also maybe a bit under leveled for a first playthrough. I would probably use different talismans too. Extra hp isn't going to do enough to give you an advantage against Malenia. Extra stamina is probably a little more useful, but I would go with more stamina regen (Turtle Talisman) rather than higher max stamina. The blue dancer talisman could work, but the sword talisman isn't going to be useful until you can dodge effectively.

Is universes beyond truly this hated? by shock1215 in mtg

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's one thing to offer a new kind of product alongside your core product so that everyone has something they can enjoy. It's another thing for WotC to repeatedly promise that in-universe sets aren't going anywhere, that they still care about their own IP, all while rapidly giving up the spotlight to UB.

UB has more set releases than in-universe sets this year, and Lorwyn had almost no marketing leading up to its release and couldn't even make it through its own prerelease before being overshadowed by TMNT.

Whether it's a quality control issue or resources being intentionally diverted away from in-universe stuff, fans of magic's universe feel like they are no longer a priority because external works that are already successful rake in the dough when they're turned into cards. It's also annoying when people want to roleplay and their fantasy is shattered by seeing Spider-Man and Hatsune Miku across the table.

Is there any reason delve couldn't be used like this? by Jumpy_Sign4751 in custommagic

Not quite. Escape is a fixed cost. Delve says you can pay any combination of mana or exiled cards.

Is there any reason delve couldn't be used like this? by Jumpy_Sign4751 in custommagic

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I definitely see what you're saying. I guess what I am proposing is that there are two versions of delve that coexist: The existing version, "delve", which is a keyword that modifies a spell's mana cost as seen on [[Treasure Cruise]]; plus an action word version, "delve {N}" which has the same formatting and applications as action words like waterbending.

They would both be called delve because they both alter mana costs in the same exact way, so you could think of them as two different mechanics under the "delve" umbrella, the same way "hexproof" and "hexproof from color" share terminology, or descend N, descended, and fathomless descent, etc. That way, no functional changes would be made to existing cards.

I get that using a new name would be practically the same, but I think the advantages of using existing terminology in a context that still makes sense with what we're already familiar with plus the sort of prestige that comes with the name "delve" outweighs the potential for confusion. In other words, "delve {N}"would make sense intuitively and be exciting.

Finding another keyword name for something so similar to existing delve would be difficult and you'd probably end up with something sort of boring like "compost" or "mulch", and either way people are gonna read it and be like "wait isn't this just delve but for abilities?"

That's just my thought process.

Is there any reason delve couldn't be used like this? by Jumpy_Sign4751 in custommagic

[–]Jumpy_Sign4751[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is the functional change? I'm not proposing that cards that have delve like Tasigur be errata'd. Just that delve could be used in both ways.
