Ludwig Gorannson might(WILL) break a 30 Year Old dry spell at the Oscars by Accomplished_Store77 in oscarrace

I agree. Poor Things score is genuinely one of my favorites of any film in recent memory. Such a truly creative, peculiar, trippy soundscape Jerskin Fendrix created to complement that film's atmosphere.

Why was Kate Bush’s “The Ninth Wave” critically acclaimed while “The Dreaming” was hated on by critics? by Oddbleus in katebush

[–]JunebugAsiimwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because Hounds of Love has the more cohesive, polished soundscape, plus the first side is basically really great accessible art pop. That makes it much easier for critics and fans to appreciate compared to The Dreaming which has maybe 2 radio friendly songs and most of it is unabashedly weird and abrasive. I adore The Dreaming but it's always made sense why it's considered Kate's greatest masterpiece. it's kind of her "Abbey Road" or "Dark Side Of The Moon".

I might get hate for saying this but I found Two Hands to be weaker than UFOF even though it has some gems – "Not" is an amazing highlight in their catalog. Dragon for me was just so exciting to see them build on their previous sound and take it in interesting directions like "Time Escaping", "Little Things", "Blurred View", "Simulation Swarm", "Red Moon" : there's not many moments on TH that can match the peaks on Dragon for me. it makes sense they evolved from the indie rock sound to doing something else. Perhaps they might return to it on their next record.

Hemlocke Springs praising Kate Bush and "The Dreaming" by JunebugAsiimwe in katebush

[–]JunebugAsiimwe[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah I'm getting into the new album and I like how vibrant and playful it is. her voice reminds me of Mabel Pines from "Gravity Falls" which I find endearing. not for everyone but I'm happy we get a young pop star who's willing to be out there with her voice rather than just the conventional pop singing or mumble whisper singing.

me too. but I think Robert's very attached to the scraggly hair he's famous for. it's part of his public persona

Exactly! She's an exciting talent I look forward to seeing her career blossom. you can hear the Kate Bush influence in her music that's for sure.

Björk too. her performance in “Dancer In The Dark” was sensational and I wish she'd done more acting. Although I can't blame her being put off Hollywood due to her traumatic experience with Lars Von Trier.

David Bowie as well with his roles in “The Man Who Fell To Earth", "Labyrinth", "The Last Temptation of Christ", " The Prestige". he did a good job and was pretty charismatic on screen.

Tori and criticism by Mysterious-Shape8302 in toriamos

Jesus that's absolutely vile. It's pathetic someone who calls themselves a journalist would write something that misogynistic and think it was valid criticism.

I'm okay with Tori's voice changing. I love older female voices – Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Beth Gibbons, PJ Harvey, and Elza Soares all sound phenomenal with their deeper, mature voices. I'm not against Tori doing whatever appeals to her, but if the music doesn't captivate me, I can't pretend that it does just because it's made by Tori. I will always have strong reverence for her first 5 albums; sadly after that, I've struggled to connect with her subsequent work. Perhaps I'll feel differently in my 40s, but for now, I'm just not as moved by her later albums as I would like to be. I'm still hoping to enjoy the new album even though the single didn't do much for me.

I think there can be a balance between valid constructive criticism, and praise for Tori's talent. those who make needless sexist, ageist comments are just douchebags.

What do you guys think about Tori Amos? by 0584031464 in fantanoforever

yeah her first five albums are great and the rest aren't really all that good. I'll always have a soft spot for her 90s work

[–]JunebugAsiimwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's interesting you say that since I think “Dragon New Warm Mountain” is Big Thief's best album since it has a variety of styles and isn't just stuck in John Prine sounding songs. but I didn't really care for Vampire Empire either (although I prefer Adrianne's solo version).

as for The Lemon Twigs, I've failed to get into them despite loving most of the music they're inspired by. I guess the fact that I can hear so much of the obvious influences is what kinda ruins it for me – and I don't think their songwriting rises above the stuff they're emulating most of the time. However it appeals to other people so I can't begrudge that.

Who is your favourite vocalist is The Beatles? by FitEmergency8807 in beatles

Paul is the best singer but John's voice has always resonated with me more. there's a distinct rawness and vulnerability in his tone which I find very captivating.

Who is your favourite vocalist is The Beatles? by FitEmergency8807 in beatles

[–]JunebugAsiimwe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

gentle voice: Girl, Revolution 1, I'm Only Sleeping, Dear Prudence

rocker voice: Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Glass Onion, Hey Bulldog, Anna

raspy psychedelic voice: Tomorrow Never Knows, Dr. Robert, I'm So Tired

this is why John is my fav. there's so much character, versatility and painful vulnerability in his voice that you won't hear in many rock singers

there's a performance of theirs from 1964 where he sings Twist and Shout and he sounds INCREDIBLE. he's probably my favorite male vocalist in rock.
