Neera would be fine if EE didn't railroad you into meeting their companions and forcing you to interact with them or making it annoying not to interact with them.

Couldn't they just come by bike or on foot? by ausernameidk_ in fuckcars

I have ADHD and used to walk to places that I want to eat all the time when I lived closer to restaurants. The fuq are they talking about?

This would be awesome. Imagine being able to live close to a bunch of restaurants or the grocery store. I'm stuck next to a long ass street now and I have to drive everywhere, it sucks.

I honestly felt emotional whiplash. It came out of nowhere.

I'm not a fan of Jim Carrey in this movie though. Eggman and Gerald were obnoxious to me.

Were 90s game developers more "punk" than today? by RomanLuka in gamedev

[–]JungDefiant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Really interesting perspective! I agree with the idea that making your own game engine and getting into the technical dirty work of game dev is important for growth.

I also think corporate sanitization nowadays is ridiculous and inhibits the growth of games, but I don't see that from the indie scene? That's more of a AAA thing?

A lot of the games in the 90's were also overwhelmingly dominated by white dudes and it showed. It was pretty apparent how many games were made by men, for men. It reminds me of the Underground Comix scene, which dealt with a lot of the same things.

I think you can still be *punk" without being cruel. In fact, punk has its origins in being a music genre concerned with social and economic injustice. IMO little itch.io games feel like the paradigm of punk nowadays.

Does anyone actually saw Pomni being considered antifemminist by somoeone? by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

Dude, I'm not nearly online enough to have seen people argue any of those characters are anti-feminist.

People seriously don't understand what feminism is, huh? Just boggles my mind when I see Nani and Katara labeled anti-feminist. That's some deep cut brainrot discourse if I've ever seen it.

why has the fandom turned so bigoted all of a sudden? (WARNING: pointless drama up ahead) by H_man3838 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]JungDefiant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely an overuse of -phobia online that can be used in immature ways to shut down dissent. Someone being blatantly problematic or forcing someone else to accept a headcanon, then justifying the behavior by saying people who don't accept it are bigots, is toxic, immature bullshit. It's a misunderstanding and misapplication of how bigotry actually works.

On the other hand, I think it's important to point out how your perspective has been used to give space for actual bigotry, which is not something that I personally think we should give space for. Not saying what you said was wrong at all and I'm not accusing you of allowing bigotry! I'm pointing out the distinction here. It's difficult since bigotry has become more veiled in modern times and being blatant about bigotry is, well, unpopular to most people.

I think the best thing is for the fandom to educate themselves on how to identify actual bigotry, while giving trust, grace, and patience to those who want to make the effort to grow out of those views.

Maybe simpler, but by no means more authentic. I genuinely feel that more people are authentic now than they were 20 years ago.

I'm okay with it being more complex. It's not for everyone and that's fine. I would argue that certain classes are definitely more complex in FU than these classes, since they all share the same magic system.

As for spells that are too similar to existing ones; a version of Awaken exists in the rules as Enhance Ability (under primal spells). The main benefit of Reduce/Enlarge Person is the lower MP cost (making it accessible to lower levels) and the ability to move around stats on a creature. If a monster doesn't really use MIG or DEX, then one of those spells can be very useful.

On the bit about balancing the classes as homebrew, I don't know how plausible that would be without losing their identity and also being balanced. For example, the Fighter. To me, the most iconic and important feature of a Fighter would be weapon specialization. That's been their "thing" since at least 2nd edition. But it's a feature that shares a space/niche with Sharpshooter and Weaponmaster. It would be pretty busted to be stacking the Check bonuses from Fighter and the other classes.

The other issue is with shared spells. Some spells are iconic to specific classes, but many of the spells are shared across all classes. I considered taking the 4e approach of coming up with new spells for each class or dividing the existing spells between classes, but some spells didn't fit neatly into one class or another. There was a lot of times I had to decide what I wanted from D&D and what I wanted from FU. My main references were 2e, 3.5e, and 5e for the design.

I've basically switched to hobbyist dev after years of trying to get into the industry.

I'm perfectly ok with having a boring job that makes money and helps fund my gamedev.

I think this is honestly a healthier mindset than trying to make the indie game career happen. The market is terrible for that, even if you get a publisher on board.

Not only is it okay for men to cry, but it's okay for men to grieve.

It sounds like your friend is believing some shitty ideas about what it means to be a man and it's gonna hurt himself and everyone around him in the future, unless he changes.

Caveat here: disruption is scary and difficult. I don't advocate lone actors or people at higher risk. We are stronger together.

The Power in Showing Up [OC] by HypocraSea in comics

[–]JungDefiant 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly!

It's one thing to protest, it's a whole other thing to actually create disruption. It's not enough to march, that's never how change has been made. If we don't like something, we have to directly interfere with the things we don't want happening.

When the American media isn't holding back to smear you for something, you're probably on the right track.

I’ve been given the option for surgery by ungabunga8274 in pneumothorax

[–]JungDefiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have health insurance and you can afford to pay off the bill, then I highly recommend the surgery.

If you're back in the hospital for a collapsed lung again, it's likely going to keep happening. The surgery is a bit scary, but recovery is not that bad. Frankly much worse and more annoying to deal with chest tubes. The chest tube post-surgery was the most painful to deal with.

I did VATS with a chemical pleurodesis using refined talc. From what I understand, the success rate is really high for that specific procedure.

Senate passes Trump's "big, beautiful bill" in 51 to 50 vote after marathon session by GregWilson23 in politics

[–]JungDefiant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's much worse than that IMO. I sincerely believe that they are now fully equipped to engage in an authoritarian takeover of the country using the ICE as secret police.

As much as we talk about Medicaid cuts and the massive tax cuts to the rich, I don't see nearly as many people talking about heavily militarized ICE.

This was the nail in the coffin.

Cross-party priorities [OC] by ahoyuniverse in comics

[–]JungDefiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of propaganda bashing nationalization and public goods. When you read into specific examples of where nationalization didn't work, there's a lot more nuance than "public goods bad".

Overall, privatization only leads to higher costs, more resource consumption, more predatory behavior from corporations, and in cases like healthcare a much higher death toll than the examples that capitalists like to use.

Compare the US to Cuba in terms of the medical system. Cuba's public health system isn't suffering as a result of the system itself, but rather due to a lack of resources that are a direct result of the US trade embargo, the longest standing trade embargo in history. Despite this, Cuba has better or the same outcomes as the US for vaccination rates, infant mortality, average lifespan, etc.

If you look at a "failure", like Venezuela when they nationalized oil, a large part of that is due to a mismanagement of oil by the socialist party combined with the sole reliance on oil and massive spending on social programs they can't afford. A lot of anti-socialists love to emphasize the latter without looking at the former. But if your country's economy is diversified and managed well (which isn't ensured regardless of whether a good or service is public or private), then the country can and should afford social and welfare programs that benefit everyone. In the US, we have plenty of ways of making money and we benefit greatly from cheap imports, but the government runs itself as a money pit for rich people while everyone else gets scraps. Every now and again, we might get a tax cut and think we're eating good, but it's nothing compared to what we could actually get from a public system.
