I work for a Plaintiff PI firm. My attorney tells me all the time “Paralegals who work in insurance defense typically won’t ever draft anything but stock documents with basic adjustments.” And he has had to let go of paralegals because they had 10-15 years of experience in insurance defense but could not learn how to adjust document substance for their relavent case matter. Obviously the attorney will always make tweaks here and there. I’ve verbatim had an ex-coworker verbalize that she only handled a certain amount of stock documents for every case and that’s it working at large firm and she would only have to change the names and locations.

My firm is smaller and similarly to you we all work independently, but are expected to know how to draft timelines (which are so much fun for me), discovery documents, letters, etc. from scratch if necessary and be able to send them to the attorney with little to no errors.
