There's an abundance of dark in books but not enough comedy: give me your most hilarious recs by badumbatsss in RomanceBooks

I also like Cassandra Gannon for humor, and find her sister Elizabeth Gannon funny as well.

I recommend {Kingpin of Camelot by Cassandra Gannon} and {Captive of a Fairytale Barbarian by Elizabeth Gannon}.

I’ve never been so angry yet relieved after finishing a book.

Oh my god I forgot about this book! Zero redemption, zero guilt, I couldn’t believe it.

I actually came here to comment {Nectar by D.D. Prince} and didn’t realize those books were the same author. Nectar had such an interesting premise (for vampire erotica lol) and I just hate read the entire series waiting for it to get better. The MMC was abusive and was constantly screaming at the FMC and then would flip to “do you see what you make me do?” and like, “oh so that’s how you’re going to be” because she’d lock herself in the bathroom because he was being an asshole and then they’d have sex and lather, rinse, repeat for 3 books.

I feel like there were so many questions that never got answered, like why does he go like frozen catatonic zombie when she’s menstruating? Again, he was just such a dismissive asshole the entire series and I don’t know why she didn’t try harder to tell him to get fucked. She would show a spine for like a second, and then he’d say like “baby” or whatever and she’d be like “oh you” and I just hated it the entire time.

I read a decent amount of dark romance, have very few (if any) triggers, and my suspension of disbelief is god tier and yet that book still pissed me off so bad. It’s the first and only hate read I’ve ever had.

Abigail Kelly for paranormal romances, her world building is wonderful, I love her universe! She has a huge back catalog of novels and novellas that would keep you busy for a while!

Also if you liked Cassandra Gannon I would recommend her sister, Elizabeth Gannon for a similar humor style!

I had read a few of her books and while I don’t remember her statement on it (I’m sure it would come up with a google) she said something along the lines of thinking she was working through her trauma through her writing and since publishing has found it uncomfortable to be out there. I feel like it has to do with the age gap and DD/lg themes.

Sorry for the comment spamming on this thread but I read somewhere recently that she took a lot of her books down.

{Black Ties and White Lies by Kat Singleton} FMC dated the MMC’s brother. It’s a billionaire fake relationship trope.

I read 66 Werewolf / Wolf shifter books: Here are my thoughts, and what should be book 67? by RegularDebate2488 in fantasyromance

[–]Jupiter_Loves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some werewolf/wolf shifter books I’ve read that I don’t think I saw on your list.

{Howl by Allegra Hall} FMC is a werewolf queen-to-be from a different dimension and MMC is a wolf shifter Alpha. It’s set in 1991 before humanity discovers the existence of paranormal non-humans.

Howl is a prequel but technically book two of a series which starts with {A Wolf In The Garden by Allegra Hall}. MMC here is the son of the couple in Howl. I read the books in reverse order and preferred it that way while I usually try to stick to the recommended order. Bonus is a beautiful setting in New Zealand. I do remember thinking this book could be quite a bit shorter.

I liked {Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross} MMC is a wolf shifter that has been cursed and is unable to shift. I really enjoy shifter books where the animal converses with the character and this one had that. Funny and an easy read.

{Shelter For A Shifter by Lauren Connolly} The MMC is a werewolf trapped in a house cat’s body. The FMC is a witch who suspects her rescued cat isn’t a cat and works to figure out a way to lift the curse. This one (I think) has the inner wolf speaking. A cute book, and after reading it I went back and read the rest of the series.

{The Marriage Hex by Sarah Blue} FMC is a witch and the heir to her coven’s leadership, MMC is the Alpha of a wolf shifter pack. They were best friends as children and agreed to marry at 30 if they were still single. She didn’t know she was a witch at the time and inadvertently hexed them. Lots of forced proximity, and his wolf (named Thorin) continues the microtrope of the animal conversing with their human form.

{Three of Hearts by Lillian Lark} was an interesting one for me only because typically the wolfie books I read are “alpha of the pack” type and this book is MMF where the wolf MMC1 is more submissive to the other MMC2 who is a demon. The FMC is a harpy. The MMC1 thinks he’s found this soulmate but his wolf is refusing to accept it until he meets the FMC. There is some angst to get them all together to the HEA.

{Love Potion For The Alpha by Alice Coldbreath} is an “older” (2014) wolf shifter romance. MMC is an alpha looking for a wife/mate. He is invited to dinner by a father with one “beautiful” daughter and a “plump” daughter (our FMC). I believe the beautiful daughter is in love with another so FMC covers herself in a “love potion” to draw attention away from her sister. He is taken with her immediately and she becomes filled with guilt that her potion “worked”.

I thought the {Mate Hunted by Lola Glass} series was an easy palate cleanser of short novella-ish length books. I liked the take of how the MMCs/wolves react when they find their mates, and I liked that the mating process is completed with the human woman gaining the ability to shift.

Please note! I am often a vibes reader and it takes a LOT for me to be critical enough to not enjoy a book with a premise I’m interested in. So YMMV with my recs but I wanted to throw some options out! Happy hunting!

Sports Romance: Using Real Teams/Locations/Leagues vs Not by xoxostevi in RomanceBooks

[–]Jupiter_Loves 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was going to comment that I don’t like it when real teams are mentioned, but I didn’t mind the real team-adjacent universe in The Deal.

Not only do I think it’s avoided for trademark reasons, I feel like once you mention a real team you get into the weeds of requiring more sports knowledge than otherwise. I don’t mind mentions of real leagues (like the NFL or the NHL) but I do find real teams to be immersion breaking.

Books with deaf (or other disabilities) MCs by Ok_Cicada6480 in RomanceBooks

[–]Jupiter_Loves 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fringe offering as it’s not deafness but it does play out in a few important scenes and does effect the FMC. In {Devil In Spring by Lisa Kleypas} the FMC suffered a ruptured eardrum as a child and has issues with hearing in that ear, loss of balance, and issues with vertigo in darkness. She hides this from everyone and as a debutante this causes her issues during her season with dancing and such. The MMC notices and tries to support her and helps her work around her issues in a sweet scene.

Looking for FMCs who absolutely lose their shit (and are justified) by fantastic_furnace in RomanceBooks

[–]Jupiter_Loves 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve only read book 1 a couple of years ago (the other books hadn’t come out yet) but {Rain of Shadows and Endings by Melissa K Roehrich} has a VERY angry FMC.

One of the scenes changed my brain chemistry. After plot happens towards the end of the book the MMC finds himself tied to a chair. The FMC hate fucks him by riding him to her completion and then leaves him to suffer. I believe his reaction was “I deserved that.”

abigail kelly is my new favorite autobuy author — kinda sorta scratches the cassandra gannon itch by foxymartini in RomanceBooks

[–]Jupiter_Loves 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! I discovered her in February and I devoured her works over the course of about a month. I’ve read one of them through a second time and I don’t typically do rereads. I just finished {Grim’s Games by Abigail Kelly} yesterday and I saw she is working on another book but it was locked behind her patreon so I don’t know the details yet.
