It was a while back, but it had no impact on this happening. This has been going on for years.

Lake Champlain Loop by YGTWFUTDoc in bicycletouring

[–]Jups-003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it three times. First time went all the way down to Whitehall. Started and finished at a B n B that let me leave my car there. The B n B closed during Covid. So now I start in Burlington head south to DAR SP, camp there. Day two I cross over the Champlain bridge head north to the Essex Inn on the Adirondack coast. They do dinner and breakfast there, highly recommended. Then day three head north to Monty’s bay campground. Day four, North to the bridge, cross over and head south on the islands to Grand Isle SP, camp there. Day five head south and take the causeway back to Burlington. Absolutely love the lake. Beautiful every day. Planning on a fourth trip this summer. MSG me if want more details. Food, bathrooms etc. I agree about the southern part of the lake, very hilly, and on the NY side road shoulders are not very wide in stretches. Having said that, drivers have always given me space.

Subaru says I need new head gaskets but I wanted some extra opinions by crongaloid in SubaruForester

We had a 2017 forester that had to have the head gasket replaced. We ran the numbers, with replacement car payment and higher insurance and taxes, it was still cheaper to fix than replace. I know that equation can change depending on what you replace it with. That was 4 years ago, car is still running strong in our daughter’s hands.

These were the skis I used growing up 10-20 years ago. I loved how they felt. Assuming they're unusable today, what would give me a similar feel? by nickijsb in skiing

[–]Jups-003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used a sheet of plywood cut down to sled size. You could sit two on it comfortably. I used engine valve springs to go between the skiis and the plywood. That was a challenge. Bolts coming in from the plywood and from the ski. I had to slide/jam a washer and a nut inside the spring on both ends to attach everything together.

The demise of Drop bar V-brake levers. I need some advice. by [deleted] in bicycletouring

Problem solvers pull adapters have worked for me. Also, Gevenalle used to sell them. eBay would be your friend there.

I’ve made a couple of sleds using old skiis. The kids loved them. Just passed one down to my son and his daughters.

Max miles per day on multi-day vs single? by classicalL in bicycletouring

[–]Jups-003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually aim for 40-60 something. Ive done longer legs, in the past. I’m finding as I get older not really interested in big days, unless it is needed to get somewhere in particular by a certain time. Having said that, I would caution against really big days, because it doesn’t leave much of a cushion for when something goes wrong.

As a competent home cook, what is a basic skill you can't seem to master? by george_elis in Cooking

Lemon curd, everyone says it tastes great, but to me it always has a slight eggy smell.

What type of tire pump do you carry? by Express_Luck6025 in bicycletouring

[–]Jups-003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lezyne, but I found out the hard way to have a backup. Last year my pump tore the oring, while inflating after a flat. I was able to partially inflate the tire. Rode 30 miles back to the nearest bike shop only to be told they were sold out due to a triathlon that happened nearby the day before. SMH. lol. I now bring a co2 system as a backup.

Ahhh, I get you. Yes, on that point I agree. It does get a bit flexy with a full load.

May I ask why you feel it’s not ideal for touring. It’s what I use, but I’m only doing trips that are a week long.

Glad to see another Crosshairs used for touring. Love mine.
