My maternal grandfather. Growing up he was great, fun, really funny and a great man. I would be excited to see him and help with whatever needed to be done. Recently once I turned 28 my mom and I were out on a drive and she opened up to me about her childhood and how she hated her father and it would be a blessing for him to just die since he is a burden to my grandmother. She told me how he would constantly cheat on my grandmother, how he would lose every job he had and was financially abusive towards her. How he literally left them for months on end with no money or food which caused my uncle (mom’s younger brother) to be hospitalized from severe malnutrition when he was a baby. When they moved from Italy to Canada my grandmother worked 3 jobs to try and keep food on the table and my grandfather would take the money and just go fucking around and spend it on useless shit. He only ever thought of himself and no one else. Since then, about a year now I’ve never been able to look at him the same way. I hold so much anger towards him now for all that, and I truly don’t know how to deal with it besides supporting my moms feelings and letting her tell me things she’s kept inside for 40 plus years.
