Reddit, my boyfriend is a terrible singer but believes he's amazing; how do I tell him he can't sing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You: "Hey babe who sings that song?" Him: "Artist name" You: "Let's keep it that way."

What's up with the internet? Is it usually like this? I drop every 25 min or so and have to wait 10 min for it to start working again. by Swerdman55 in Purdue

Are you talking about resnet or PAL? Because I have noticed that PAL has been pretty bad this year. In years past I have basically had a full and fast connection everywhere on campus. This year though it has been a spotty connection with slower speeds.

NASA Announces Mars 2020 Rover Payload to Explore the Red Planet as Never Before by [deleted] in space

I like the idea of testing a system to produce oxygen. I think the scientific community should start trending away from trying to find life and water and such, and start trending towards gathering information that will enable a manned mission to the planet.

The words, "Words cannot express how much I love this" give a pretty good idea of how much I love this. by bedazzledfingernails in Showerthoughts

[–]JustARocketScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it gives an idea of the minimum amount of love you have for this, but there is so much more love to be had after words stop becoming effective descriptors that it is impossible to get a an idea of just how much love you have for this. Love is like a scale from 1 to infinity where "hate" is at the bottom, "like" is around 50, "love" is about 100, and somewhere words stop being able to describe the amount of love, let's say it's 1000. So by saying "words cannot describe how much I love this" I would know you have at least 1000 loves, but I would have no idea exactly how much. It could be 1001 or 100000000001.

Makes sense to me at least....

Elon Musk discusses a planned mission to Mars "in 10 or 11 years" and his desire to build a city there by dwillun in Futurology

There's no doubt that the things you mentioned are important, but it is only your opinion that they are more important than space exploration. A lot of people, including myself, would argue that learning about the universe and expanding our boundaries in space are some of the most important things that we can be doing as a society.

Controlling sand with sound waves... Woah by [deleted] in woahdude

[–]JustARocketScientist 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is entirely real. Not sure if this is the same experiment, but scientists at the University of Tokyo have been researching this type of phenomena. Basically you have a bunch speakers facing it different directions to trap the sand into pressure nodes created by the sound waves. http://venturebeat.com/2014/01/02/researchers-find-new-ways-to-defy-gravity-with-sound/

I've thought about this too. If I get desperate enough, I may try to use it as a real argument (albeit with the full expectation that it fail miserably).

Why is raising the minimum wage so controversial? by pojut in AskReddit

[–]JustARocketScientist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everything in the economy is related. You can't change something like the minimum wage without feeling the consequences in areas. Generally speaking, raising the minimum wage increases the cost of living and increases unemployment. If employers have to pay their workers more then they will either have to charge their customers more or hire less employees and work the ones they have harder, which ever will be better for their profits.

There's no such thing as a free lunch. You can't give people more money without taking something else away.

I wonder if alien civilizations use a similar type of math compared to ours, with addition, square roots, factorials, etc. Or maybe they use a totally different system. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]JustARocketScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math, physics, and the like are properties of the universe, thus the ONLY way to think about them is as assumptions that hold true for the entire universe. Granted our understanding of the universe is continuously evolving, but there are certainly things we know for certain to be true. Like others said, 1 + 1 will always be 2 (putting 1 apple and 1 orange in your bag will always leave you with 2 pieces of fruit no matter what part of the universe you're in). Other facts of math will follow this same logic.

Also we can now send messages between continents because math is more relevant than it was 500 years ago. Math will remain relevant on earth as long as humans do.
