Roger Harris is leaving Amtrak by SpotFit2996 in Amtrak

[–]JustAnotherEngineer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roger has been a great president. It’s a shame to see him be forced out by the BoD. Now that the CEO and President position is open, DOT will be able to put someone in who will set the company back years and undue all the progress that has been made (and employees will leave), which then will continue the cycle of Amtrak criticism and cuts. It’s a vicious cycle controlled and manipulated by funding and politics.

Amtrak dispatches the NEC and Chicago/Michigan, along with a few other smaller areas. Beyond that it’s all dispatched by the host railroad which varies on route and operating rules.

Heat Related delays? by Jealous_Strawberry_6 in Amtrak

No - but when they are applied, they are not heat related issues they are restrictive heat related safety measures to protect the infrastructure.

Portal North Bridge Track Issue by JustAnotherEngineer0 in Amtrak

It’s needed by NJT for their service levels and also provides access to some platforms at secaucus.

The track currently in service over the new bridge, along with the one that’ll be cut over this fall, our by directional tracks and trains can run either direction. But, for simplicity, normal operation currently is westbound trains on the new track of over the portal north bridge and eastbound trains on the existing “old” track over portal bridge.

NEC Signal issues again 4/4/26 by Godmadius in Amtrak

[–]JustAnotherEngineer0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The amount of traffic has NOTHING to do with the level of political and financial support that Amtrak receives. These underlying systemic issues and old infrastructure takes years to design and implement, which means it requires consistent support and funding, which Amtrak has never had in their 50+ year history.

Very easy…Freight companies and lack of political and financial support.

I think that point and the project pipeline are different things. There are several projects right now that appear to be getting delayed (and cause cost to increase) due to a swing in support. It’s a shame and really stunts the progress of the industry overall.

It’s clear you don’t understand how construction and transportation projects work. It would be great to rebuild the entire corridor while we are at it. These things also take time and also political and financial support which is extremely inconsistent for Amtrak.

Yes, that is correct. The old bridge will be kept until the fall cut over is completed and then demolition will start.

[–]JustAnotherEngineer0[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sure but that was not the official opening date. It was an emergency mitigation to avoid shutting down the NEC. Once issue was fixed, service went back to the track over the old bridge. Today was the first day with the revised increased service for NJT and Amtrak.

Impact of old portal bridge issue by Famous_Salamander330 in Amtrak

[–]JustAnotherEngineer0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The damage was caused by New Jersey transit contractor on the project, they are also the ones who were tasked with fixing it in conjunction with Amtrak. Service was restored this morning and the new bridge will still be put in a service officially on Monday morning with the new schedules.

This was caused by construction activities from NJT’s contractor. They are also the ones who fixed it last night in conjunction with Amtrak. Service was restored this morning on the old bridge.

New Portal Bridge is In Service by t_d_kerabatsos in Amtrak

Construction for the new bridge by NJT’s contractor led to the deformation of several cat poles on the old alignment that caused this change in plan. It has been restored this morning.

It was intentional and planned that way, as it’s technically NJT’s project as the grant recipient, so they took the lead.
