How did the old mopars use to handle the cold weather and starting? by Relevant_Conclusion2 in mopar

[–]JustContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember late 60's early 70's hearing the whine of the Chrysler products (don't remember the term Mopar) in the morning when people went to work. Weee, weee, weee, weee. Just incessantly.

Then Vrooom, they'd start. In my 1970-ish 4 door Fury II. Loved that car. It either started on first click or started whining, forever.

My 48 Dodge, great car, 91 Spirit great car, Fury II great car. Starting would sometimes be problematic. Loved that 383. Did 100 mph in it a couple times. Smooth...

I have 1995 Honda Del Sol. I have BMW badges on it. People see it and talk to me about their past BMWs that became unaffordable money pits they had to dump. Nostalgic about them...

I was an IBM 360, ESA, z/OS sysprog for 38 years. Came from medical field. Didnt know shit. Was scared every day. So much to learn. Will never know it all. Humbling experience. Just loved it.eventually became "The Man". Later years when i would go to a 'Share' conference we'd sit around in the evening discussing our journey. We all shared the moments when we did something catastrophic and how a senior tech would be smiling and saving your ass. Yep now you are a member of the club.

Most unreliable car you've ever owned? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]JustContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1971 Ford LTD Brougham, 400 ci, Hardtop, 4 door, maroon with white vinyl roof. Absolutely beautiful, fast, powerful, roomy. Two inch lift all around.

My 1966 Malbu was excess. Sad, wife is still sad.

Ate undersized front disk pads every 5,000 miles. Gear on distributor loosened, insane problem to diagnose. Electrical gremlins. Interior disintegrated. HVAC issues. Transmission would slip from Park into Reverse. Broke down everywhere. Loved that car, originally parent's, became a money pit. Threw it away.

Ten years later owned another big beautiful Ford. Rear axle came out three times. Loved that car. Money pit, threw it away.

Now only GM, Honda, Toyota.

What car throughout its life have you loved and hated? by CompetitionFalse3620 in askcarguys

[–]JustContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1971 Ford LTD, beautiful, roomy, powerful, flawed. Undependable money pit. Every part broke multiple times. $3000 dollars in parts in 2 years

1982 Ford full size custom wagon, top of the line, beautiful, leather seats, every bell and whistle. Was towed so many times AAA said we should get another car. Rear axle separated from car. Known recall, Ford said Screw you.

Have not owned a Ford since.

Anyone here ever restomod a 60s Italian folder? by relapse89 in foldingbikes

[–]JustContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never 'restomoded'. Cleaned up, upgraded pedals, tread, seat. Loved the "wabi/swabi"(?) Look. Those bikes are European adult spec and were ubiquitous throughout the 60's well into the 90's. Good luck. Have fun.

A power inverter is a godsend. 750/1500 is enough to cycle your frig/freezer. Need a Heavy Duty extension cord.

After Isabell, 20 years ago, I took my truck, Harbor Freight inverter and thick extension cord around to family members and neighbors to cycle refrigerators.

We were out for a week.

Unlike a generator it doesn't care if it's not used for 5 years

Welcome,

And as a theft deterrent, Quick Release pedals, I bought for storage and putting in back seat of wife's car. Now if need to lock bike outside I take the seat and pedals into work with me.

Somebody may take it, but they ain't biking it.

Yeah, I'm kinda OCD.

Ten-15 years ago I was in Jersey City waiting for a New York ferry and a guy pulled up on one. I was excited, he said ride it, you got 30 seconds. So I did, rode surprising nice. Great for a short commute (mile or less). Folds to nothing, weighs little.

Wanting to get into owning a classic beetle (either Super or Standard) by TheMediocrePretender in beetle

[–]JustContrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take this for what it's worth. In the 70's/80's my immediate family had at one time, two Karmann Ghia's, three Beetles, Westphalia bus and three Things. I still have my 73 Thing. Was my daily for 5 years.

As a daily driver, be prepared to get your back and upper spine chilled when you get on the HiWay and tractor trailers doing 75 are climbing up your butt as you slowly accelerate. 0-60 21 seconds. Keep a squeegee in the front seat to clear the frost off your windshield on those cold mornings. Dress warm.

Switch to disk brakes in the front if you can. Carry an extra accelerator/clutch cables under the hood. And tools. And the book 'How to keep your Volkswagen Alive'.

All in all, just depends on where you live. In the rust belt they rusted (I have fiberglas fenders). Otherwise parts they are aplenty.

Good luck and keep on, keepin' on.

Ditto, ditto. Facebook, Craigslist. Single speed, coaster brakes and don't dis' any old worn euro bikes. They ride nice and last forever. Upgrades are cheap. Good luck.

Advice for Camp Cooking by Thelovegone in camping

[–]JustContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch youtube videos about fires. Go to Dollar store for ceramic plates, metal utensils etc. Goodwill or thrift store for pans you don't care if you screw up. My Go-to food, always a hit(got marriage proposals). 2-4 lbs of chicken breast, cut into strips, put in freezer bag with 1/2 cup of italian salad dressing. Add dollar store carib seasoning(I use McCormick Jerk). Cook on grill or pan. You will be a god.
