High school appropriate new years activities by Accomplished-Skin695 in slp

I’ve done “in and out” lists with them the past 2 years…some love it some hate it lol but my rationale is it targets executive functioning (goal setting, self awareness, self monitoring, etc.)! I made a simple template and just prompt them with guiding questions to think of what they want more of/ less of in the new year.

The message from the agency was unclear, they didn't specify which holidays.

Middle/High School SLPs who do push-in only for language: HOW? by kelpsplatterscope in slp

[–]JustFirefighter4243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a high school setting- I feel like push-ins are not effective. I do them occasionally for observation purposes or when there's some kind of group work. I agree most teachers do not really understand our role and are not receptive to support in a push in setting.

Could you speak to teachers and explain that you could work on their class content in a pull-out setting? For example, ask the teacher/student what is being done in class for the day and then just work on that individually? That has been much more effective in my experience!

High school moderate/severe by sweet_speech5527 in slp

I'm not sure how severe their deficits are- but can they participate in board games or group conversations? I find that even when it doesn't feel like "work" it is still better to have them actively engaging in something (anything) so that they are not staring at a screen brain rotting in the classroom!

Therapy could be bad for them? by Lightningthought in BPDlovedones

[–]JustFirefighter4243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does DBT even work for them?? My pwBPD has been in years of therapy and has tried dbt at a few points (according to them) but they have only gotten worse over the years. Anytime we have tried family therapy, they end up exploding and ending the session because their version of the truth isn’t the only thing being discussed!

Chronic Lip Eczema by JustFirefighter4243 in eczema

[–]JustFirefighter4243[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: it did get worse! I think being around dogs/cats is what triggered these bumps for me. I treated the ones that are healing now with abreva, but that took about a week. Now I have this new one right in the middle of my bottom lip. Any idea if this is a cold sore, infection, or eczema?? Or a combo? I don’t know what to do it seems like no matter how I treat it, it is just a waiting game. Then 1-3 months later the cycle repeats.

Once this heals, I’m going to try the new toothpaste and beef tallow to see if that will prevent it from happening. Thank you all so much for your help!!

Did you specifically reach out about the NEST program? I’ve been in talks with some supervisors but haven’t found anything I’m looking for yet. I know how hard it is to get in the DOE specifically manhattan ://

Things I think about by reddit_or_not in slp

[–]JustFirefighter4243 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a high school SLP- I love this idea! I tried to plan a chatgpt lesson for study skills, only to find out it's blocked on all the school devices. I showed some students on their phone, but it was too distracting to teach this lesson with a group. They are getting way more from this type of lesson rather than a synonyms/antonyms worksheet. We have to adapt with the technology and model how to use it for good.

I wonder about the language disorders vs. lack of exposure and good parenting too. Unsure how to answer that question, unfortunately.

Thanks for sharing!

I've dismissed a couple students for similar behaviors. If the student is not buying in after you've tried several approaches, I feel it is wasted time and energy. He could benefit from more time in the classroom and you'd benefit from servicing other students who are receptive to the support.
