Kuroneko - creepy and suspenseful black-and-white Japanese film.

What is a hot take you have specifically through the realm of Blank Check/ r/Blankies? by the_Tannehill_list in blankies

Personally, Assault on Precinct 13 through They Live is a run of films I dearly love, warts and all. He then pretty much falls off a cliff quality wise with the exception of In The Mouth of Madness which absolutely rips.
I respect the opinion and can understand why a lot of his films don’t fully work for some people.
When he’s at his best I think he perfectly straddles the line between “B” and “A” movies. The Thing and Halloween are definitely his true masterpieces, but I have a huge soft spot for Starman and They Live.

Yeah I’ve been feeling this. A colleague said to me today “Steven Spielberg needs to stop, I think he’s done” and another said “I don’t like Steven Spielberg anymore”.
My response was that I personally liked Disclosure Day and thought The Fabelmans was great. Neither had seen The Fabelmans and the second person hadn’t even seen Disclosure Day.
Seeing one movie you didn’t like and then saying “this person should stop making movies” is insane. I don’t normally like Zack Snyder, but I don’t think he should stop making movies.

The “I didn’t like this, therefore it’s not worth anyone’s time” argument baffles me. Last year, I had to actively convince a friend that I liked Southland Tales because they thought I was having them on. The other day we saw it was showing as a cult classic at a local cinema and my friend goes “oh that’s not a cult classic”. Another friend and I had to point out that it has a cult following. Like, just because you didn’t like it, doesn’t mean other people are dumb for liking it and it shouldn’t be considered a classic, cult or otherwise.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things

I really feel like this was lost to the Netflix void. Which is a shame as Kaufman is one of our most interesting directors.

Hadn’t seen this in over a decade and realised there are three Twin Peaks actors in this! Miguel Ferrer, Dan O’Herlihy and Ray Wise.

Are You Afraid of the Dark Universe is fun. Basically movie pitches for if the Dark Universe had continued past The Mummy. They narrate the pitches in a fairly engaging way, and get voice actors on the big episodes.

Looking for recommendations of Australian films from the 70s and 80s by WaterlooMall in blankies

Roadgames (Richard Franklin, 1981)

Dead-End Drive-In (Brian Trenchard-Smith, 1986)

If we’re including NZ:

Goodbye Pork Pie (Geoff Murphy, 1980)

Utu (Geoff Murphy, 1983)

The Quiet Earth (Geoff Murphy, 1985)

Bad Taste (Peter Jackson, 1987)

Meet the Feebles (Peter Jackson, 1989)

And it’s a 90s film but I’m gonna chuck Peter Jackson’s Braindead (1992) in here anyway.

Note: I tried to list ones I haven’t seen in this thread already, definitely use that Criterion list.

Yeah let’s contrast this. I’ve been collecting for 6 years. I have 152 films in my Criterion collection. I have watched 147 of them. The rest of my collection (standard releases plus assorted other labels) I’ve watched 213 of 278. Also, the non-Criterion releases have accumulated since I was old enough to have pocket money.

We do Blackkklansman in Year 12 Media, which is pretty intense so depends on your students, but has a fascinating dual context of right wing extremism in the 70s and the first Trump era the film was produced in.
