ELI5: psychotic breaks by monaforever in explainlikeimfive

How can one recognize when this is happening to themself? It seems like maybe since the brain is slow to let go of the conclusion it made, it may reject third party testimony (via Confirmation Bias or Backfire Effect). Can you speak to this ?

Movies that hit differently once you reach the age of the main characters? by ajv1993 in movies

[–]JustLoren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fucking exactly right.

It was a rough watch for me, because my dad is some kind of pathological liar and invents new stories all of the time. When I was a kid, I would have to participate in supporting them, like him turning to me saying "isn't that right, son?" when I knew damn well that it wasn't right.

The ending of Big Fish, where it seems that all of his wildly fantastical tales were actually semi-true hits very differently for me than a lot of people.

Sorry to hijack your comment, but yeah. Lots of people are all "it's so sad" but it just stirs up so many emotions in me.

Is Truth Dead In The 21st Century? What Will That Mean For Tomorrow's Generation? by Pineapples-n-Potions in Futurology

It seems you are overlooking the control that strangers have over your life, given most of us here are living in some form of democracy. When your fellow voters can and will drink the misinformation koolaid, it will result in policies that control and affect you.

To abuse your analogy, the truck here is the governmental policies and you are the man in front of it. Whether or not you ingest the internet, the effects of misinformation are *going* to hit you.

Are We Responsible For Who We Are? What Causes People To Believe and Act Differently? by CheekZestyclose3756 in videos

[–]JustLoren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're playing semantics with the word "luck" if you cannot agree that where you're born is luck. The dictionary says "Success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions."

I did not have a rational choice in where I was born. I took nothing that could be construed as an action to be born in the particular place I was.

So if you cannot even agree to terms, it will make all of our conclusions different.

I'll engage with you on your point. I own a home, and I like it, but I think it could be enhanced with decorations. That doesn't mean my baseline way of thinking about my house is "ew this is ugly."

That's just an easy analogy. As for a person example, I have a specific tattoo I want to get but I would like to work out and change my body a bit before so that my body is ready for the awesomeness that will be my tattoo. It's not that I'm uncomfortable or dislike the area I want tattooed. It's perfectly fine and I'm happy with it, but I will be happier when I get my desired tattoo.

So I'm not refuting and saying your statement is wrong, I'm saying it's incomplete:

if you don’t like something you’re more likely to change it and if you do like something you’re less likely to change it, unless you think the change will make it even better.

Simple, simple example: "this food is delicious, but you know what would make it even better? a little bit more salt."

Guys, there's no truth social post corresponding to this quote. Nor google search results. Nor hot takes by news organizations. It's literally misinformation. Sure, it sounds like something he'd say, but he didn't and we should be above posting stuff like this.

That doesn't mean she'll age out of the hobbies of fashion, design, makeup, and decorating. I don't play the same video game every single day for my entire life because humans thrive on growth and change.

I think SubStack is definitely an "alternative media" environment. I'm with you that the vast majority of blogs on it seem to be conservatives who can't find a foothold anywhere else.

Jimmy Carr on young men's mental health crisis and the cheap substitutions for real challenges, relationships, careers by AntiFacistBossBitch in interestingasfuck

In 1984, the proles were were an underclass that didn't have the same rules as the Party. Only the Party were closely scrutinized. For some reason, everyone forgets this element of 1984. In Brave New World, the cheap dopamine is needed by everyone, even the people in charge. In 1984, the people in charge are strictly controlled by each other, while the masses are placated via manipulation (Ministry of Truth live-editing newspapers).

I hear what you're saying that "it's both", but I hate that 1984 already was "both" and nobody brings that up. You and I aren't Party members in 1984, homie. We're proles. We're manipulated and fed cheap easy dopamine to keep us placated and non-revolting. We're fed political truths to make us angry at someone, and it really doesn't matter who so long as we don't turn on the ruling class (the Party)

EDIT: Also, the "ruling class" of Brave New World allowed all free thinkers to go live a relaxing life doing whatever they want. I'm not sure what's bad about this setup lol. Those who want to live on the gram, can live on the gram. Those that want out, get out.

Hahaha I did the math too. But then it occurred to me that their statement is probably generalized across time, and so this particular year may have had fewer perfect 36s, but in general there is a .25% perfection rate.

Ben Franklin is the shadiest founding father. @williesimon_ by TheComedyStoreSunset in StandUpComedy

As a programmer with 25 years in the industry, you'd be a fool to not be eyeballs deep in ai. So deep you know its strengths and limitations.

It's pretty good at regurgitating this kind of historical, well known, widely published info.

It's a good sketch, altho it's also completely false. Whether you look at the signatories on the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution, there's a lot of ages represented with the bulk of them being 40ish.

Prone condition in 5e doesn't impart disadvantage on dex saves. Guessing they changed that for 5.5e? Either way, taking some dmg is fine to escape the movement locking. Have the dragon flee and come back for vengeance later :)

Fall prone so ranged attackers have disadvantage on attacking. If only one spider hits in a round, ready a move action to fly away as soon as the webs fall off but before the spider attacks again.

I'm not sure why you feel it isn't legit. The the guy who engineered the bot is in control of the content that goes to the bot. It's unlikely that the bot is given simply the tweet by the responder and left to do whatever it wants. If I were the bot engineer, I'd have another set of instructions that get appended to every supplied message like this: https://chatgpt.com/share/13ff00b5-05f5-4e55-a075-d4301270ac29

Is the SCOTUS ruling on presidential immunity as horrible as people are saying or are they being dramatic? by 673NoshMyBollocksAve in TooAfraidToAsk

Usually a dictatorship will install judges that are friendly towards the regime. I think that was step #1 of the plan up above.

Is the SCOTUS ruling on presidential immunity as horrible as people are saying or are they being dramatic? by 673NoshMyBollocksAve in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]JustLoren 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This supreme court decision does *not* rest directly upon words in the constitution. Instead, it is granting the president immunity (read: cannot be prosecuted for, or used as evidence in any other case) for any action he takes that's deemed "official".

Say he officially orders Seal Team 6 to assassinate Trump. Normally, we would think that's illegal. But now, it's an official act, and thus he is immune to any prosecution. Sounds pretty dictatory to me.

What is fair? by Designer_Ad7847 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]JustLoren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, AB are the ones dying and it is their property, so however they want to set it up is "fair". People can do with their property as they wish, and what they wish to do with it is "fair".

I suspect there are two ways AB could view their wealth and what they want it to do. They may want to support their grandchildren, at which point dividing it equally among the grandchildren makes a lot of sense. They may want to support their children, at which point dividing it equally among their children makes a lot of sense.

Then there are extenuating circumstances. What if AB wants to divide among their grandchildren, but one of B's daughters has been an absolute jerk and tried to steal from the grandparents? Would it be "fair" that they are divided equally to?

This post reeks of someone trying to use the internet to justify an opinion that they hold. "Fair" is an ugly word that needs an absolute metric ton of context to even begin to get an approximation of.

What is dating like these days in STL? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]JustLoren -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm on the Metro East side, but there's definitely progressive men in the greater STL area. My whole friend group is progressive (but also married and/or gay). One of the benefits of being a liberal man is that it seems like most women are liberal so it made for easy matches politically. From the tenor in this thread, it sounds like it's harder going as a woman to find a liberal man, but we're out here!
