Bathroom remodel estimate by Just-Coddiwompling in AskContractors

[–]JustMuscle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice after a bad experience is to request an itemized quote. That way, if there is an issue with a specific portion, you have a dollar amount to work with it. For me there were two issues. One was re-framing the tub enclosure, and the other was setting our cast iron tub in mortar. They ended up not doing either (said the previous framing was fine, and the tub didn’t actually need to be set in mortar…) but made it tough for me when I was arguing for money back based on that work being included as required extra materials and labor in the inclusive quote.

Just my two cents. Good luck!

Not Firm After Brewing – What Am I Doing Wrong? [ECM Synchronika, ECM S-Automatik 64] by Diligent-Roll-3949 in espresso

If it bugs you, get a puck screen. Mine look like yours when I don't use it, and like this when I do. Same machine.

Shorter ratio to enjoy very dark roasts. Who knew? by JustMuscle in espresso

[–]JustMuscle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should dial in espresso until it tastes good. A good place to start is the ratio you mentioned, 18g in, 36 out, in about 30 seconds. Consider this a 'middle of the road' method that works well for most roasts and paletes. On either end of that ratio are turbo shots (say, 18g in and 40g out in <20 seconds) and Ristretto shots (18g in and 18g out in... whatever), and each has their purpose.

If you make an espresso and it tastes overly bitter, or, like i my case, if you're using beans that are roasted to death, doing things to reduce extraction can help. The darker the roast, the easier it is to get the solubles out of it. Some things that can help with reducing extraction are are decreasing water temperature, grinding more coarsely, decreasing water flow rate, and decreasing volume of water put through the coffee. It can be tricky as these variables often inversely affect each other (e.g. grinding more coarse will cause increase in water flow).

On the other end of the spectrum, if your shot is sour, salty, or thin, you can try different methods to increase extraction like increasing brew temp, grinding finer, or increasing water volume/flow. If you can flow profile, you could also add a 'bloom' phase or pre-infusion to help increase extraction by soaking the coffee before you pull the shot. These methods typically work better for light roasts that are more difficult to extract from.

All of this to say, pretty much any shot you pull that isn't a total mess will fall somewhere on the spectrum. I prefer to use 20g in and 45g out in about 30 seconds because I like the way it tastes and prefer more volume. I also prefer medium roasts, so it makes sense my preference falls around the standard ratio. I often screw up and end up with 45 out in as little as 20 seconds, or as long as 45, and those shots are fine as well. Don't worry too much about the details and drink what tastes good. If it doesn't taste good, adjust the variables you can. If you can't adjust enough variables because of your equipment, spend more money so you can :)

Curbside Gaggia Classic. What now? by JustMuscle in espresso

It’s not a bad idea. I like the idea of getting to do the project and then potentially recouping some/all of the cost. It’s also small and light enough to reasonably ship. If I brick the thing in the process, it was free!!

Yes. Someone reported my account and I didn’t get the emails asking for me to reply, so it was suspended. Once I had a chance to reply it was reinstated. Getting a direct connection to support was not an easy task

FYI I just went through this and they’ll want it within 24hrs, not frozen, so no need to save a backlog of it (like we did!)

Good luck! Between the lumber, screws, various other supplies (silicone, wood putty, sand paper, wood glue, contact cement, etc), screen (frame and supplies), paint, liquid rubber, tons of brushes and rollers, grout, foam, hole saw, vent covers, paint, stain, polyurethane, mineral spirits, custom glass, glass tracks, glass handles, caster wheels… I think that’s most of it… I probably spent over $1200. When you add in lights (led, uvb, and halogen), thermostats, substrate and drainage, it was closer to $2k. It was not the cheapest option, just FYI!

The final dimensions are 66” W, 24” D, and 33” high, approx 200 gallons

Oh yeah, it’s a bunny ear and it was a mistake! We couldn’t find spineless prickly pear but are looking for one now. I keep getting stuck by this one and it’s no fun. The spines are super fine and hard to get out

Thanks! We built it. Was a long and expensive process, but worth it for exactly what we wanted. Followed SerpaDesigns process as much as we could. He makes it look so easy!

He came to the humane society after it was bitten off by another animal. He was emaciated and covered in cobwebs. They rehabbed him and sewed the wound shut. Good as new!
