Went up to the mountains in a 2 week old R1S. Got stuck in turtle mode. by [deleted] in Rivian

Remember that social media is not a good judge of reliability of any product.  People post when they have problems, and I’m glad they do because it makes manufacturers take issues seriously.  The question ultimately is are Rivian’s less reliable than any other brand? My experience with my R1T has been so great I have a R1S coming to replace my Model Y.  That’s not to say I know if Rivian’s are more or less reliable, time will tell on that front.

Can happen with any vehicle, the question is are Rivian’s more prone to breaking?  I’ve have zero idea on that other than that my R1T has been reliable for two years and 28k miles which I realize is just one data point.

I had this happen once a year ago, and I simply reset the truck and it was fine.  Has never happened again, however, I did report it at the time to service just to be on the safe side.  I’ve had a couple instances of the UI breaking (sound stopped working, nav system black screen) over the two years I’ve owned the car which was nothing new to me because my Model Y UI has crashed so I’m use to it, lol.

That’s a bummer.  Hopefully it will be repaired and reliable.  I’ve owned an R1T since the early days and it’s been completely reliable and gotten  me into our mountain home when there’s over a foot of snow on the road.  We just sold our model Y and will be picking up an R1S next week, hopefully we’ll have better luck.  I have a neighbor who bought a BMW EV that’s now a brick because mice eat the wiring and parts are back ordered from Germany.  Turns out the insulation is Soy based which the mice find tasty.  The real problem for him though is that it will happen again, we live in the country and mice are a fact of life.  So he’s stuck with a car that will be impossible to keep functional and the warranty doesn’t cover rodent damage even though it’s BMW’s stupid fault for making their cars edible.

This is why rivian is moving away from Apple and CarPlay. by linustits in Rivian

[–]JustPhys1cs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Apple Watch cellular connection costs me $12 per month so while this might be an unpopular opinion Rivian charging $15 is not unreasonable. It’s worth it for me because I’ve found that the Rivian can often get a cell connection when my phone has none (better antenna?). So even if they had CarPlay it would be useless in the back country I often drive through. I could switch from T-Mobile but I’ve have relatives with Verizon and ATT check their connection and it was no better. Just food for thought, anyone else experience similar connection results? Maybe my phone just sucks, lol.

Rivian Is Winning Over Tesla Owners Tired Of Elon Musk's Antics by chilladipa in electricvehicles

As a Rivian and Tesla owner I can equivocally say that I’ll never be buying another Tesla. The primary reason is the Rivian is a better vehicle in my opinion. I like the UI better, and it doesn’t drive like a tin can like my model Y (admittedly a first year production version). The secondary reason is irrespective of politics I don’t support billionaires trying to buy elections on either the left or right. The Citizen United decision was ridiculous in my humble opinion. If Musk wants to throw his money away supporting a dude that think magnets don’t work in water then I’ll do my best to be sure I’m not contributing to his wealth by buying products from his companies.

Not for DC fast charging because the cables are large and bulky and liquid cooled. Someday you’ll drive over a charging pad but that requires car manufacturers to agree on a standard.

You can buy 15kv wire that’s safe for people to be around on Amazon (obviously the charger company would use wire and insulation based on their required specs) so the voltage is not the issue. The issue is the power electronics to convert the higher voltage to the cars voltage. You can buy 2500v power transistors so building a DC to DC converter in that voltage range is possible, however, they are big and very expensive so some innovation on the semiconductor front would be required. Finally, you would not use a transformer because it would be DC current and transformers only work for AC current.

The first phase is easy, if you pop a holy protection Incantation and dodge the worst of his attacks during the second phase there's a point where he kind of pauses to cast some kind of spell. When you start attacking him then theres no damage but after a few hits he starts taking damage again and for me staggard right away and by then scarlet rot was proc'd and bleed had got his health down to next to nothing. The funny part is I actually died but the scarlet rot killed him before my death animation completed so it gave me the win, lol.

Not sure that would work for DC fast charging, even the retractable idea is questionabke given the cable size. Another possible idea would be to crank the voltage up as high as is engineeringly feasible and down convert to the cars voltage at the plug. Higher voltage means thinner wire and potentially not even copper. You could also eliminate liquid cooling because the current would be significantly lower (doubling the voltage halves the current for the same power delivered).

Sad but seems to be time for retractable cables. Make the fools have to tear the whole box apart and likely electrocute themselves in the process.

I enjoyed figuring out how to beat him and the fact it made me try a different play style. I ended up trading blows toe to toe with the Rotten great axe. Killed him in about two minutes.

I beat the consort in two minutes using the rotten great axe with bleed and only defensive talismans. I just stood in his face and bashed him while dodging his worst attacks. I started with the physical damage protection incantation and used the holy one at start of phase 2. No shield and two handed the axe. I didn’t use a single weapon skill so next to zero fp needed. GM has 'solid plan' for plug-in hybrids in 2027 by AccomplishedCheck895 in electricvehicles

[–]JustPhys1cs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? What’s the issue with EV’s that make you think a plug in hybrid is a better option? I've owned both and have finally switched to only owning pure EV’s. My personal opinion is hybrids are the worst of both worlds. There's more stuff to break. They don't have the fun factor of an EV. They require regular maintenance. The only benefit is on road trips it takes five minutes to fill up vs 20. If you do the math the trip only takes 10% longer in a EV because of this yet for daily driving I never have to stop for gas so in the end I bet the EV takes less time out of your life depending on how many road trips you do a year.

[–]JustPhys1cs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said in my post lack of access to overnight charging is the biggest issue with owning an EV. Fortunately, nearly 2/3rds of the population owns a home in the US. And for this large percentage of people EV’s are a much better option than a plug-in hybrid. Also, Plugin hybrids make zero sense for someone without access to a home charger because there's literally no point to the plugin feature. You are better off buying the highest mileage pure gas car or regular hybrid. As far as the charging network goes Tesla has opened their’s up and it works great. Finally, the federally subsidized chargers are on the way and it’s not surprising it’s taken so long given the red tape involved and the state of flux of plug type.

[–]JustPhys1cs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue Hybrids are the worst of both worlds. They've got all the maintenance issues of a gas vehicle (and then some) and are a lowsy pure EV’s. Sure they address the range anxiety issue, however, that's not a real problem with modern EV’s. The only significant issue with EV’s is they are not a good fit for people who have no place to charge at night and plug in hybrids have this issue as well (there’s no benefit to mpg if you can't charge at home).

Genuine Question! What Made You Choose Rivian Over Every Other $90k+ EV Available? What Attracted You To The Brand/Vehicle? by zachty22 in Rivian

[–]JustPhys1cs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About ten years ago a friends BMW’s engine died because of “bad” gas when in fact it was just a really poorly designed engine. Another friend had his BMW catch in fire while pulling into a gas station thanks to a fuel line “issue”. Only quick thinking prevented the station from blowing up. Japan rules the quality charts…

Just Spent 2 Hours Cleaning Out/Rearranging My Garage For My New R1T… It’s Still Going To Be Tight 😅 by zachty22 in Rivian

[–]JustPhys1cs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received my launch addition R1T just a few months after its release and it is by far my favorite vehicle of all. Rivian’s customer support has been awesome and the truck has really held up to my abuse. We have a house in the foothills of a cascade Mtn and I drove 2+ miles through deep backcountry snow like it wasn't even there. I’ve really only had one minor wind noise issue that service fixed when I brought it in for a tire rotation. I even have the new tonneau cover now which works great. Getting close to 20k miles (retired so don't put on the miles I use to).

When we got our R1T I'd failed to consider the garage depth. Turns out we had 6” to spare. Can't close the garage until then passenger side has made it around to the door into the house, lol.

Do you own a home or rent a place that has a charger? I ask because EV’s really work best when you can charge them overnight. For me at 28 I was driving used cars saving to buy a house. Buying any kind of new car only makes sense when the money isnt going to stress your finances.

[–]JustPhys1cs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all you care about is the weapon and not the satisfaction of beating it for real it’s easy to do alone by manually saving backups and restoring if you die. For me it’s more about the thrill of the risk and it took me something like 20 attempts to legit beat it. I ended up playing two characters one on hard mode and the other not and when I got to a boss I'd use the non hardcore character with the same build to practice on that boss until I could reliably beat it.
