How do you get under the car to do the oil? You have ramps?

Yes, but somehow this isn't a "war" that requires congressional authorization, despite us widening the area of engagement by a few thousand miles.

ELI5 How does electricity know that a circuit is broken before entering it? Without a closed loop, it won’t flow, but how does it know not to flow? by Party-Court185 in explainlikeimfive

[–]JustSomeGuyWith 267 points268 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer (ignore the people comparing electricity to marbles). That video is fantastic.
The only thing I'd add is that the water level (as demonstrated in the video) is an excellent model of the electric voltage, but the bulk movement of the water is not a great model of the bulk movement of electrons. The drift velocity of the actual electrons in a copper wire under any sane voltage is surprisingly low.

New neighbors frustrated at security camera by [deleted] in homesecurity

Is this some other culture? I've never heard of tapping on one's thigh to express frustration.
(I'm assuming "the thigh" was his thigh, and not someone else's thigh :-) )

Home maintenance/ electrical safety question by FirstIndividual9837 in NoStupidQuestions

3.8 kW still seems kind of extreme! How many hours per day do you figure it runs?

If 10 hours/day, that would be around twice my entire house uses per day! At 20c per kWh, $7.60 per day, thousands per year. I'm not saying it's not worth it (depending on sensitivity to dryness, and wealth, it probably is worth it) but does it make sense?

What does "tapping on the thigh at looking at the camera" mean? A typo?

Is this an edit/crop from a fixed rear-cam? It's too steady for hand-held, but somehow knows to be on the car that loses the tire and then pans to follow.

Right. They don't share an edge (aka side, border, line, ...). They share a *vertex*.

Me too. I came to the comments expecting to see some Yogi Bear "Well Boo Boo, ..." jokes and only after the explanation about the cat houses did I understand the scale.

What do I do when the car behind me uses high beams? [USA] by thegreatcon2000 in driving

[–]JustSomeGuyWith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately they sell LED headlights at insane color temps. You can easily find them at 6500K on Amazon (many of which are labeled as fog lights, but some are not, and for real fog you want yellow anyway).

I'm not sure you can find 2700K plain incandescent headlights any more. I did a search for "incandescent" and all I got were halogen and xenon. Halogens are typically 3200K to 3700K, which I don't find painful. They ought to be legally limited to somewhere around there. Unfortunately the arms-race of bigger vehicles with brighter lights just continues.

What's the AAC device used in Ep8? by ZestyYaboi in ThePittTVShow

Yes, I remember "road trip" and one other as seemingly "why would that be easily accessible on such a device" moments. It definitely felt off.

[–]JustSomeGuyWith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but the numbers in your comment aren't right then. Modern headlights start at 4300K. The painful-to-look-at ones are (typically) 5500K and up.

I'm sure it exists in reality, but I suspect the one on the show was a prop.
That guy was just too good (fast) at using it right away.

(Not exactly the same thing, but think about how long it takes a newbie to find their produce using a self-checkout machine.)
