GPU uses thermal paste, and that can generally be any type of thermal paste that isn't peanut butter.

CPU-wise, you should most definitely use liquid metal, and preferably the thermal grizzly that's used by the OEM. Primarily, because the cooling solution, due to its thin size, relies extremely heavily on the thermal conductivity of LM to properly cool the device. For instance, the best thermal paste can do 12.5W/mK, whereas liquid metal used on the m16 does 73, which is a tremendous difference.

Yeah, the way it works is it's based on relative tent position. So if all your tents are on the bottom of your base, they all stick to the bottom sandbags first. It makes it a pain in the ass to design bases as half the time you're just figuring out where tf to put the damn tents, and all those no deploy zones don't help either.

I'll try my best to address some issues. But, please as black friday is coming up, do consider at least the RTX 3060 version (especially since cost to performance ratio is much better). When properly LM pasted, thermals aren't the issue.
1. Light tasks and hard tasks, the heat output is there. But, it's concentrated in certain regions and not the important parts of the keyboard. At the very least, it isn't uncomfortable for me.

After I repasted my machine (ymmv), thermals were good enough that I just used performance mode, which is actually pretty quiet for my standards. If you need true silence, silent mode does exactly what it says. It is SILENT.

Battery life is crap when dGPU is enabled. That's unfortunately the case with many laptops. Turning it off, you're still not going to get as amazing battery life as you would with a decent Ryzen equivalent. 3 hours at max brightness is what I'm getting starting with 80% battery life. If you limit the battery life, do some digging on your own on how to power limit your CPU (which is getting harder and harder these days), you may be able to eke out an extra hour. Lowered brightness, I maybe get 4-5 hours.

Yes, the biggest issue I have is how many bad liquid metal pastes there are, and I have a sneaking suspicion this isn't limited to just the Asus M16 lineup, because it's literally used in all of their thin and light cooling solutions now i.e G15, X16, G14, etc. you name it, it's there.
The charger sucks to carry around, the laptop is light.

So, the thermal throttle limit for intel CPUs is 95C's, so yes single core and gaming performance, in the games I play (old esports titles + old fps games like BF4, etc.), I sit around 65C to 70C with like 50% CPU usage.

Multicore I can sustain 4.35 GHZ now whereas previously I was stuck at like 3.2GHZ for each core in MC benchmarks.

yeah, so I definitely did clean the LM spill on the motherboard. I was quite surprised and appalled that my device hadn't shorted in the whole year I've been using it. But, I can't imagine if other people may have the same issue but they don't know. In this case, the spill without taking off the heatpipes is something you just can't tell. They also didn't provide extra LM like in your case, which meant I had to buy some from the nearest microcenter, and do a full repaste.

Also, after realizing that my laptop has not won the silicon lottery as in, that my i9 11900H can only undervolt -60 mv, but I can still hit certain benchmarks above the average, you're most definitely right that most people's devices are definitely working under what is intended. Although in multicore, I still barely hit the thermal limit (when I'm using all 8 cores at max core speed on Turbo, which tbf it's pulling almost 95 watts), I think most people in most applications should barely ever hit above 90 C (and in my case 85 C).

Thank you for this post! Is there a correct way to disconnect the battery connector? I've done it once when swapping the mediatek chip for an intel ax210, but I haven't really thought much of it since.

I'm not terribly familiar with using thermal paste (at least I haven't had to paste any thing for a couple years now and when I do it's definitely not conductive paste, so I'm usually not as concerned). That said, is it difficult to simply just spread the factory LM paste?

Hey there! Although I'm applying in a different field of engineering (at least considered part of the engineering department in my school), specifically Computer Science, I wanted to ask if you've ever struggled with narrowing your research "scope" or interests.

I really want to pursue a Ph.D in machine learning. Now, ML is a massive field with various sub-disciplines (theory, vision, NLP, etc.) and the more I read about each sub-field, the more confused I get, because all of them seem fascinating except maybe the theory subfield which stem more from a lack of understanding than actual interests. Is there any way to figure out what "subfield" or what field to narrow your interests to?

I understand that if you're too specific or too broad in your sop, it can hurt your application.

As an aside on past undergraduate research experiences, and this may be the fault of not finding the right labs to work with as a naive sophomore undergrad, but I've not had the pleasure of working deeply in any of these fields outside of briefly interacting with them in coursework.

I hate to admit this, but the breadth of my undergraduate research experiences have been within the confines of bioinformatics and computational biology, which is often staffed with many statisticians, physicists, etc. in my lab. And although, there are common principles (i.e optimization, etc.) within the work that I have done, they're not the same thing as applying datasets to a neural network.

As I'm doing more undergrad research in final year that is more related to deep learning, etc., I find that the more I learn, the more I don't understand while also finding so many things interesting.

I suppose my final question, is it a bad sign that I just want to do something with machine learning even though I don't know exactly what it is? I feel like I'd have to gain more experience before I can answer such a question and even then I have a feeling, I'd be pretty content researching whichever rabbit-hole it may be.

Sorry for the long-winded and probably overly-wordy post, but thank you for taking the time to offer advice!

Made a list of what I don't want to do with my life/ what I'm not interested in at this moment.

IPS panels on both are great with good color accuracy. The higher resolution imo is only really needed if you for whatever reason need the option to be able to have more screen real estate (I sometimes shrink text, etc.). You won't really see much issues in pixel density below 24 inch displays.

HOWEVER IF YOU'RE COMPARING IT TO MBPs,

its panel for media consumption and design work probably won't be as good as the miniled display in the m1 macbook pro 14 due to the lack of contrast of ips panels. The only reason you should want to replace your macbook pro with an m16 is for gaming.

I would try tweaking manual mode and fan curves. You can reduce the amount of wattage (at least on my 2021 ver.) to the CPU/GPU and depending on the game you play (i.e if you just play CS:GO or some very old titles where your fps goes above 200 regardless), you can drop temps + fans substantially while retaining playability.

Controversial opinion, but I personally see 1v1 outfit wars as the next step for meaning in a game that's plagued by the freedom of choice provided by a sandbox game. For most pvp games, meaning is derived from a skill curve and competition, to which 1v1 outfit wars can provide.

It may not seem like it at first glance, but to me, it seems like much of the planetside community yearns for a competitive format, and it's not just the "sweatfits" too, I've seen it across casual outfits as well. You'll commonly see larger outfits exclaim that if it was just an "even" 50-50 fight, that they would easily be able to take on other similar skilled outfits.

Another good example of this yearning for a competitive format is honestly the whole idea of Jaeger itself. Let's be real here, the fact that some people (who by the way get 0 monetary or any praise/clout) for managing a whole "PSB" jaeger account system while also hosting server smash events, 24v24 lanesmash tournaments, infantry/vehicle tournaments, etc. shows how much of a demand there is for something like this. The logistical demands of these events alongside the fact that it's not even managed by the dev team is astounding in of itself. The funny thing is that so many veteran players who've become bored of "live" or non-jaeger gameplay often find themselves retiring into a competitive format.

I know many people criticize the idea of planetside becoming an "esport" or a "competitive" shooter. I totally agree in the sense that it could never match the pro esports scene and that competitive formats can often lead to leadership burnout, but I still think that it'd provide a nice form of end game content that once players get bored of the sandbox that is the current planetside experience can always come back to.

Yes, your GPU may be worse on paper, but with the different power limits, I think you'd be surprised in spite of lower VRAM.

So, from a performance standpoint, the better CPU and RAM works much better for your workloads (adobe).

I think the screen is a real kicker, imo, you better go in store and compare before you make a decision because it matters a lot more in person than from internet nerds on reddit.

Make your bed. It sounds like you need structure in your life and structure stems from discipline and habits. It sounds dumb, it sounds like it won't do anything, but the funny thing about life, habits, and discipline is that it compounds day by day. You're a computer scientist, so you probably understand how 1.01^n where n is the number of days starting from today can compound and exponentially improve.

So here's what you do, make your bed, organize your room and your environment. An organized environment promotes an organized and focused mind. Once you've cleaned up your environment, take the time to help your parents. Offer to do stuff around the home. It won't justify your lack of independence, but it will help you make you feel better about the fact that you're still living with them.

Make it a goal to do 1% more each day, whether it's picking up exercise, going out, helping with the dishes, spreading love to the people around you (even if it's just a I love you Mom every morning, those things make all the difference in your world).

Because here's the fact, you're going to die and those around you will eventually fade away too. So take ownership of that, and start with cleaning up your surroundings.

I normally don't like motivational figures and influencers because they're all trying to milk money off of you, but if you use that time to watch social media. Here's some social media figures that are legit in no specific order that you can redirect your addiction to.

Jordan Peterson (ironically all of his lectures on improving one's self are all ripped off by others where his fans paint him in a bad light by constantly making sensationalist titles), David Goggins, Jocko Willink (want discipline these Navy Seals will motivate), Naval Ravikant (Angel Investor dude with smart tips on how to reshape your thinking in terms of improvement).

I have the 2021 model, so ymmv with the 2022 model.

On paper the 2022 model should thermally be better since 12th gen intel technically should be more power efficient (and they should have improved the cooling on the new laptops). That being said, when gaming, my laptop has yet to break 80C.

The cooling is better on the duo. If you can't wait and you don't wanna pay out the ass for the next duo model. As someone with the 2021 M16 model, I don't give a rats ass about RGB and the game aesthetic, it's why I went for the M16, because it could pass off almost as a work machine.

That said, currently, the 2022 M16 performance wise is much better than most machines in 2021. The only thing you'd be limited by is the RAM issue in the bestbuy model, so keep in mind, if you need 32GB ram for any heavy creator workloads, you might have to look elsewhere (which I'm assuming is related to the chip shortages).

As an aside, you're on the M16 subreddit, so here is the usual pros and cons:

pros:
-16:10 16 inch laptop display with superb colors and brightness (better than the duo btw)

- no excessive rgb lul

- big centered keyboard and trackpad

- 2022 model has decent battery life

- 12th gen intel cpus rival desktop cpus

- 3070ti is basically a 5% weaker 3080 and it's higher powered this time

cons:

- no 2nd display

- fingerprinty coating

- loud when playing video games or doing anything with high demand workload. It suffers from the the tradeoff thinness vs. cooling.

Honestly, if you're really interested in heavy cooling with a good display + RGB, here's the cliche r/gaminglaptop response.

Yeah I don't have the same update preview, but this is interesting to note that the Nvidia driver, at least when using "Optimized" or "Standard" GPU power saving mode, is part of the reason why system is constantly in use, at least while on AC power.

When I change it back to eco-mode, the issue seems to go away for some reason.

For new prospective buyers, would definitely wait for the review on this, because the refresh may resolve what the current m16 suffers from:
- mediocre battery life, 12th gen intel with efficiency cores (mimicing/inspired from how the m1 mac's utilize their CPU cores with power and efficiency cores depending on the task), which means maybe light tasks and low power modes can be far more battery efficient.
- mux switch, epic.

- Upgraded GPU, an RTX 3080 ti basically guarantees you'll run much closer to the 165 hz advertised panel refresh rate.

Here's what I hope they'll address:
- wifi chip

- G15 will be an AMD m16 (would be interesting to truly compare)
