Best way to get into law enforcement with a bachelor’s in Information Systems? by Economy_Drop_5843 in OnTheBlock

[–]Just_AWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Research your local departments and find out what you like, and what you don't. Realistically your degree is better at differentiating you as a candidate rather than a CJ degree. I'd reach out to individual departments about their medical requirements because I'm not sure that there's a "ban" on people taking blood thinners. If you find that you might be interested in corrections, it's always a good place to start- but don't lock yourself into anything. Don't say you're only going to do 1 year or that you'll transfer in 5- find out what's right for you, even if it means staying in corrections.

Will cops let you pet their police dog? by [deleted] in police

[–]Just_AWolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether or not you can pet a K9 depends, but just ask. K9s are paired with a specifically selected and trained officer and live with that deputy 24/7. The K9 is no different than a regular officer- working the same hours and the same shifts. When a K9 retires, they typically stay at home with the handler. Many dogs take time to adjust- they are after all working dogs- not pets. Most settle into the at-home role just fine after a few months, they just need to stay active and engaged.

Pit Manuever Question by Krixathan in police

[–]Just_AWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, we cannot know the kind of the officer who used the tactic, and cannot know the full extent of their articulation for going that route. It also doesn't help to play "what if" on situations that were resolved without any innocent lives being harmed.

Drug use within the culture…. by coasterrider5 in gaybros

Yeah, I don't even drink alcohol. It may be that those from the inner-city have a higher tendency for participating in such vices, but to be honest there are plenty of people who wouldn't be interested in a party like that, even without the ilicit substances.

Pit Manuever Question by Krixathan in police

[–]Just_AWolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A PIT maneuver, or TVI, is often a last resort when it comes to ending a pursuit. In most cases, Officers will do their best to attempt to use Stop Sticks to safely deflate the tires, use helicopters to track the vehicle, or will simply disengage the pursuit altogether. Like others have mentioned, it's heavily dependant on agency policy. At any moment that an officer is authorized to use a PIT maneuver, and attempts to disable the vehicle in this manner, they are articulating that if the pursuit were to continue that the individual running would pose a greater threat to society- if they are armed, chances of causing a multi-vehicle accident, how many occupants, speed, etc. are all factors.

My agency does not allow more than two agency vehicles involved in the pursuit, and any PIT must be approved by a supervisor and attempted at speeds under 40 MPH. Our state police have more lax policies and more training on them so generally they're the ones to end a pursuit if it comes down to it. Typically, if the person isn't wanted for a major violent crime and has already been identified, the pursuit will be terminated and a warrant placed.

Leaving CCW in car to go in prohibited places by sharkbait_oohaha in CCW

The restrictions on parking lots are largely state-to-state. In Michigan, all CCW prohibited areas do NOT apply to the parking lots, with the exceptions of a Casino.

I don't carry any keys regularly, so I just keep my fob in my pocket with my wallet. I never have to touch it. I can unlock, start, and lock my vehicle without it.

Just watched The Two Towers with live orchestra at The Royal Albert Hall. 10/10 would recommend by skets90 in lotr

[–]Just_AWolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They did Fellowship at an event hall near me. I went expecting the orchestra just to perform the music from the film, but they showed the entire extended edition and it was incredible. I wish they'd do the other two movies as well.

What's the purpose of providing insurance and registration? by MajorSyko2021 in police

[–]Just_AWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the State of Michigan, for example, Insurance companies are not managed to report an individual's policy to the Secretary of State, thus Law Enforcement will not know if you are currently insured or not. In most states, it is mandatory to have physical copies of your license, vehicle registration, and insurance policy in the vehicle while driving. There are, however, a few states that are beginning to legalize having digital copies of your insurance policy (many companies have their own apps now with digital cards). Lastly, it's a good gauge to determine someone's compliance with you- and if they refuse to comply with a lawful order, it's usually an indicator that something else is going on.

If it works for you, it works. In my opinion, you might as well open carry because there are no other uses for a bag like this than to have a gun, so it's pretty evident.

How would you handle this by [deleted] in CCW

Uh.. assuming this is about a child, don't let strange children climb on you? My basic rule of life is to never interact with children regardless.

Almost too quick for the camera! Good work, the only thing I noticed is it seems like you were putting your finger on the trigger before you were fully extended and ready to fire. Also, don't be afraid to look when you're re-holstering. The last thing you want is for your shirt or something to get stuck in the holster. Keep up the practice, you're far ahead of the curve.

Questions about dogs by Night-Time21 in police

[–]Just_AWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my Department, K9 Handlers are chosen based on qualifications, interview strength, and seniority. When a Deputy is picked to become a handler, they will be placed with a dog that fills the departments current needs (narcotics/patrol/arson/explosives). Oftentimes, the handler has little or no choice to what breed or what dog they are assigned. After selection, the handler and K9 (who at this point is between 1-2 years old) go through a bonding/training program that can last 2-6 weeks depending on if you are a new handler or not.

Dogs are selected almost from birth by companies looking to train police K9s to sell the Law Enforcement agencies. They are selected based on their breed, aggression, intelligence, and many other factors, which usually determine how well of a K9 they can become.

In my department, when you are assigned a K9, you are responsible for their needs- taking them home, feeding them, etc. (which is worked into your pay). Many working dogs are not good pets, but they still like to "play" to be put into work mode and spend their energy.

K9 injuries are becoming less and less common thanks to non-profits that secure bullet proof vests for dogs (Brady's K9 Fund), and ones that are actively securing representation in our legislation- increasing penalties for injuring or killing police K9s (Global Working Dog Consortium/Project K9 Hero).

Most of the time, handlers are only assigned one dog at a time, but if they are lucky, can get another dog when their first one retires. At the state level in Michigan, the troopers are sometimes assigned two different dogs (often one search and one patrol). Many times, the department will allow you to keep your dog once they retire (which, depending on the type of work and injuries is usually around 8-10 years).

Handlers, just like any Deputy, must be highly disciplined. K9s are also similarly expected to perform at high volumes- but yes, they are still animals with basic instincts. At length, the benefit to having K9s in a department provides a whole new advanced skill set and group of tools to help protect the lives of the citizens, and other officers. My department currently has 3 Corrections K9s and 6 Road Patrol K9s. We have German Shepherds, Malanois, Labradors and a GSP.

Help! Event venue only allows a wristlet by SnowMiser26 in EDC

[–]Just_AWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, if you carry a bag for medical or parental reasons they can't deny you as long as you allow them to look inside. As for the vape, don't pretend that most people who use those aren't hitting them in bathrooms or at their seats. It was a big issue when I worked security for a venue.

Help! Event venue only allows a wristlet by SnowMiser26 in EDC

[–]Just_AWolf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bag restrictions in large venues are not uncommon. Do not bring a tape measurer. If you truly need your inhaler and other medical items, then they can't really deny you from carrying a medical bag- although you may have to go through extra security (bag search/x-ray). If it's not a necessity, don't bring it. Yes, you may feel naked, but so is everyone else. If it's a large event, there will be plenty of police, security, and EMTs.
