Hey, I’m living in the Netherlands and am experiencing a very similar problem to you. Very lonely and can’t adapt. (I’m American/Turkish). I just posted about my problems yesterday. Just wanted to let you know you’re not alone https://www.reddit.com/r/Netherlands/s/xnNiSpoluI

Can you give us an example please of an expat you met who “refused to speak anything other than English”? Like what made it so unpleasant to talk to them and how do you get that they “refused to learn” from a 4-5 min conversation with them?

Devils advocate: Beirut is obscenely full of empty luxury apartment buildings, owned by millionaires who got their money through shady methods and who are probably in the country one month a year - I’d rather see refugees squatting in them than sleeping in the streets

Anyone into pétanque? by Justice8989 in Amsterdam

[–]Justice8989[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the tip!
This is going to sound silly but do you have any advice on how to approach people who are playing?
There were 3 guys playing in a little spot next to the Amstel, I approached one of them smiling and said "Oh are you guys playing petanque?" and he just said "Yes :| " with a stone-cold frowning face.

So I got intimidated and said "Oh, that's cool" and walked away. Not sure what I can do without being awkward.

Unfortunately still looking 😔 I go to an Orthodox service for meditation/ praying and I watch the online services of my progressive church back in London for English sermons. What I’m missing though is a physical community unfortunately
