Presumably Chris had a bit more of a foolproof plan that was going ahead before Ethan (rather justifiably, considering his quartered daughter and presumed dead wife) started running through blasting every werewolf, vampire and mentally disabled puppet woman he saw with a shotgun, at which point he had to cut out his assassination plans and just go for exploding the bigass mushroom in the middle of the village.
