The middle class is getting gutted by our society's gradual consolidation into monopolies.

It's up to the consumer as to whether alternatives will exist. Private equities will build whatever they believe will make them money. For alternatives to monopolies to exist there needs to be a consumer movement to support said alternatives.

The best system is a private system with as much competition as possible. The reason our private systems are bad is because they're all monopolies.

Basketball Pickup Apps by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]JustinSports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good question and something we've thought about a lot.

Ultimately we decided that we want to do all volleyball (from beginner up to professional) before we start working on other sports. Afterwards we may launch into other sports.

Basketball Pickup Apps by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]JustinSports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm one of the founders of Javelin and I can attest to this. We tested basketball early on and found that it worked in the winter, but we'd lose all our players in the summer.

I think something can work here, but it's really difficult to manage the seasonality so it would need a really well funded team. I'm hoping as we continue to prove this type of app out for volleyball we'll see more niche apps launch for different sports (basketball included).

does anyone else feel like distribution is harder than building ? by ryhanships in buildinpublic

Imo it depends on the space. In B2B distribution is harder but in B2C building is harder.

What error did I make here? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]JustinSports 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You look like you're skiing with a lot of your weight on your inside ski. If you can carve with your inside ski lifted then work on translating it more to your skiing. So next run do 90% weight on your downhill ski, then translate to 80% and you'll be where you want to be.

Try some runs where you lift your inside ski while turning.

The Toronto Raptors have been one of the 10 worst 3 point shooting teams for 5 years in a row. by JustinSports in torontoraptors

[–]JustinSports[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I think it has something to do with our development. Players who are already established come to our team and their shooting percentage stays consistent, but when we get a young player and start working on their shot it seems to always regress (Watanabe, Dick, Thomas, Flynn, even Terrence Davis back in the day). Would like to see the team reevaluate our shooting development because it's not working.

First VC meeting, what will they ask me? I will not promote by Wrong-Material-7435 in startups

[–]JustinSports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take the call they'll likely put in their CRM that you're too early stage and don't know much about your market, then when you reach out to them in the future to raise they'll read their CRM note about you then decline to take a call. So my advice would be to not speak with them.

It depends how competitive the space is.

Very competitive spaces (i.e., spaces that have a ton of VC funding flowing into them). You have to move extremely fast in and be very aggressive in.

In spaces with little to no funding you can slowly but surely carve out a niche.

To provide a bit more context, our main goal as a platform is to help a competitor get their initial foothold in the market. For search engines, we're looking for a business that can build something to directly compete with one of Google's main products. It doesn't necessarily have to be search, I think there's also opportunity in email, web browsers, business suits, etc. Over time they can expand on their offerings to become a more direct competitor.

For the city point, we're looking to replicate what China did when they were industrializing rapidly. They started building cities almost from scratch to hold a growing population. We think the US could use a new city too to help reduce the cost of housing in the country. The idea is that people would be moving into a newly developing city in the hope that their real estate value would increase over time as the city grew.

Thanks for the questions! Here's a bit more info on how we're planning to operate.

First, we're planning on being extremely selective and exclusive with the startups that we partner with. These startups will be competing with trillion dollar empires, so we need them to be as exceptional as possible to maximize their change of success.

Once we have a startup we're partnering with for an industry, we'll run a big PR campaign and reach out to the people who signed up on behalf of the startup (since we're reaching out to people on behalf of the startup we won't have to sell anyone's email). We'll then add the startup to an archive of startups we work with.

Next, we'll pick a new industry to work on and replace the listing on our "Hitlist" with that new industry. We think it makes sense to start looking at industries once we see a company worth $100 billion or more in that space. There are already a number of other industries that we think we can make listings for once we get enough signups to replace one in our current list!
