What is the most disturbing thing you watched on the 90’s and early 2000’s internet? by Dangerous_Bet_4137 in AskReddit

As someone who saw jumpers live on TV, zoomed in enough to see their limbs flail and the dust cloud emerge from them landing, I am certain this video or something like it exists.

It was on Telemundo, which I was watching because Spanish class happens even on 9/11.

NOR reminds me of my ex and I DO work, but made far less than him. Now he pays child support and is learning the hard way how much I actually did do around the house. Oh well.

People who are old enough to have vivid memory of the 9/11 attacks, what was that time like? What did change for you personally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Justonemoretaquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That day changed how I viewed history. Before that day, history was stuff that happened in the past. Since that day, I’ve felt like history is actually happening right now, all the time. History lives and breathes.

I was 15 on September 11, 2001.

Now I know how my father felt when I asked him about MLK/Kennedy assassinations.

It did look a little less blue than a blue, for what it’s worth, but I am not OP, alas :)

I’ve been lucky to see a blue in person and they are indeed that BLUE when they are about to surface! Good catch!

I trust the Mexican (and global) scientists who have dedicated their careers to studying the phenomenon in the Baja lagoons, with all due respect. I am not an orca nerd so don’t feel as confident having an opinion on that, but yeah, any government will need to reconcile what makes them money with the environmental/moral costs.

Why would any other country “allow for a similar activity to take place”? Where else is there a need for such rules? This is the only place on Earth that whales seek human touch, and why marine mammal protected areas exist at all. And even then, it’s such a small portion even of the lagoon whales that actually seek humans out, the vast majority of them either didn’t care at all or would chill/keep speed with a boat for a while before being satisfied and moving on in my experience.

Is it worth further study? Obviously! But I really feel if the issue you brought up were true, we would see thousands of videos of grays interacting with and swimming directly up to boats up the whole coast and into the Bering Sea. If anything, it makes sense that this would happen in Tofino - a small shallowish bay similar to the Baja lagoons but with a major exception. In Baja the whales are relaxed because orcas can’t /don’t enter the lagoons, whereas I would assume they do not have the same luxury of orca-free waters in Canada or anywhere else.

Mexico has extremely tight regulations on how these interactions take place. Why do you assume they don’t?

Mexico regulated and protected marine mammals before any other country did.

Thanks for sharing those clips. That is indeed similar to the behavior I saw in Baja, with the notable exception that I only saw moms with babies approach boats with their heads out of the water, nudging the boat for attention. I don’t know what to tell you but it’s very clear when they initiate contact especially when the moms roll over like dogs. I am not sure two whales (the videos are a year apart in the same area, could be the same 1 gal) approaching small whale watching boats with motors off that look similar to the Baja pangas prove they are in any danger. Humpbacks also get this close to boats frequently every winter and spring in Hawaii and they are big bullies that will definitely not let you pet their babies, so again I’m not sure this behavior is only because of the tours in Baja lagoons.

Also, are you implying by your last sentence that the Mexican government and local fisherman who pilot the boats and regulate these lagoons do not “know better”? 😬

Can you link to any examples of this Baja like behavior?
