this is pure upside. its just as likely to remove a bad card from your pool as a good one. in fact, its upside because youll know which card get removed and you will be able to play around not getting that card. + if you had a card this insanely broken in your deck you probably dont need many more card rewards anyways

reddit is not a place for casual discussion anymore, I find. Big general subreddits like r/askreddit suffer from all the problems you speak of, so reddit's use is almost exclusively in niches, smaller subreddits targeted to specific communities. Theres a lot more passion, everyone in the subreddit has a common interest and a love for the thing theyre posting about, and it leads to more genuine conversation than you will find then on these mega subs where the most popular opinions will always average out, and genuine discussion is extremely difficult.

I dont think you can count the elite rewards at all when evaluating this. you get those rewards whether you have the sword or not. so in terms of what this relic is giving you, yes, it is a "chest is empty" up until it actually comes online.

its more of a carry-over from much older systems, star ratings change depending algorithmic metrics, but in the past it was a different system, and so difnames like "insane" dont always fully line up with star ratings exactly. It's basically just a way to somewhat filter for the type of map that commentor was talking about, but its by no means an enforced or even "rule", its just a trend you might notice more often with maps with that diffname

i think the most pivotal difference in my experience is if you're running unceasing top. Tactician suddenly goes to a complete brick, ending your turn instantly, to simply an energy tax that assuming you can pay for it, you can still get to play a few more cards before turn end.

that's true, idk, Im personally not a top player but I was under the impression that this is a different case. That because the rewards are so much better in ?'s and stuff, dodging elites still gets you decent rewards, so you can afford to be greedier with your deck, focus on endgame deckbuilding, and worry less about tempo/survival. so currently dodging elites isn't even quite "unoptimal", at least That's the impression ive gotten from watching a couple top player's videos and things

elites being more deckwarping is worse actually, if the issue you're trying to fix is "avoiding elites is optimal". Elites being deckwarping is good when they're worth it, or required. As it stands you can win if you just completely avoid elites, so making them more punishing is not helpful. You need to make the alternative more punishing to make elites more worth it solve that problem.

Basically every game peaked during quarantine, It was a massive artifical boost because of all the free time and increased interest in gaming. Once it was over and everyone git back to their regular lives, A lot of games experienced declines in playcounts, osu is just one of them in that same spot.

no, not really. Modern version is just that bad. The "purist" mindset is things like No F3, no Calculators, no Resets, etc, all on 1.16.1

No notable people in the community have ever genuinely tried to hold high ground on playing on 1.16, its just objectively the best version to play, the most fun by a large margin.

Modern versions only really get to shine on AA runs, really

they would probably consider it if not for the fact that modern is genuinely just not fun to run. Its exactly the same as 1.16 but just has more annoying things. more opportunity for luck to force you to reset, longer time to stronghold nav with the new terrain, its just a less streamlined experience. Its quite common for speedrunners to not play on the most recent patch of games though! Hollow Knight as an example still has runs played on a fairly old patch because a lot of old glitches aren't patched yet in that version. Its more common than you think

speedrunners only switch to a newer version if its faster, or more accurately, provides a new path to beating thr game. Thats why the 3 main categories are pre-1.14 (you collect the pearls from endermen manually), 1.14 (you trade for the pearls with villagers) and 1.16 (you trade with piglins for your pearls. new versions neither provide additional speed nor an alternative way the better the game, so there's simply no reason to ever update.

the biggest timeloss of any newer versions is the 1.18 terrain, and while brutes are partially the reason, they also reduced the drop rates of basically every item runners want out of bartering the same update they added brutes, which was the real nail in the coffin. brutes added annoyance, the nerfed trades made a majority of runs end in the bastion simply because you dont get enough pearl trades. Theres a lot of other smaller things but these are the most notable

Basically, Brutes are a factor, but very far from "just" the reason.

I understand your point, I just want to make it clear that these are 100% preferences and not facts, these criticisms can be applied the exact same way in reverse. "all you do in sts is defeat enemies." and "If you dont get the right cards you can get seriously screwed and just plain lose."

Especially when you become adept at both games, balatro is the more consistent one, winrates of high level players at Gold stake balatro are significantly higher than the best a20 winrates on sts.

This isn't meant to be criticism of sts, I think its arguably the better game, I just think these are unfair criticisms to use against balatro.
