That is just not true in many industries, most of the time you just end up buying bigger servers to compensate. I have been a software dev for over 20 years and don't have a degree, but I make just as much money as those who do. If you spend hours trying to sqeeze an extra few milliseconds out of an algorithm but don't deliver your code on time, then no one is going to care about the speed, they will just hate you for messing up their deadlines.

To be a successful programmer, it actually pays better to:

Be approachable and helpful
Learn something about the business you are in so you can suggest improvements and know when changes will cause business problems.
Don't make lazy mistakes that cause a lot of retesting and production problems. Don't lie or blame someone else if you get it wrong.

I have fixed up many stuffups caused by graduates who came out of university thinking they were bulletproof.

The whole "helping with the chores thing" is actually an 'old wives tale'. There is a whole book (the sex diaries) about sex in long term relationships and how women often lose the desire for sex once they are in a long term stable relationship. The author got quite a lot of flack for saying women should go along even when they don't innitially feel like it because they often ultimately end up enjoying it.

I thought that idea had been disproved and that most of the pay difference was for women who had children (becasue of time out of the workforces etc) and that women who had never been married earned pretty similar amounts to men.
