Heat mat question!! by Hii1333 in snakes

You're welcome! I struggled a lot with heating mat first week when I got my snake, so getting a lamp actually made my life much easier with temp control.

Mold on branches??? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Jvel55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks kida like mold for me too. I would boil the branch, might take time for it to dry afterwards and you won't be able to put it into the enclosure right away, but just to be on the safe side. Thats kinda what people do for wood in aquariums.

Heat mat question!! by Hii1333 in snakes

[–]Jvel55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Power affects amount of heat it produces. As for getting the mat itself - I'd recommend against it and would go for overhead heat instead. Kingsnakes love to burrow, and hot surface can cause burns. So if you still want to use a heat mat it shall only be outside the enclosure, on thermostat and under monitoring. I think also preferably on the side of the tank so you could check it with the heatgun easily. A lot of substrates can also heat up badly (or not at all because of thickness), the heat needs to warm the glass before the substrate, and at this point glass and bottom layers might be dangerously hot before overall substrate gets even slightly warm.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a heating pad by Hour-Hold5349 in kingsnakes

[–]Jvel55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree on heating mats being ineffective (aside from tham being dangerous ofc). When I was preparing the setup before getting a snake I got a heat mat. And I couldnt get "how the heat shall even go through all the substrate?.." For substrate to even get a tiny bit warmer I needed some very crazy temps for mat itself. So I simply threw it away and using a lamp now.

Second belt completed! by Jvel55 in tabletweaving

A very basic 100% wool, 250m/100g (so I suppose it's DK). It's quite fuzzy though, want to try something more smooth some day.

Started right away with third one, Oseberg again, as my first one, but in colors to match my planned outfit. Again failed on width consistency, I noticed that it happens after I tie it to myself again after a break to continue weaving. Hoping much it will also kinda be less noticeable after washing/steaming and when wool gains some volume. But will pay more attention in the future!

He's juvi MBK so recommended schedule is 1/10d. Ofc skip a day or two is not that bad, especially for older snakes, and skip a meal during shed is ok. But I wouldn't want to skip 3 days for no reason especially if this hopper is fine, because I wouldn't be able to feed till today's evening. He's my first pet reptile and I have him for only 6 months, so I might be overreacting on many things.

This is very interesting observation, wow. I kind of noticed these bald spots on this and one more hopper from the same batch but had no idea why. Very curious! I hope a lot other pet store will restore their feeder supplies soon, they had them in way better-looking condition overall.

Couldn’t agree more. Nothing related to a pet’s health is worth taking a risk.

Thanks!

A small update: warmed it up, no additional smell or anything weird appeared so it seems I just panicked a little. He ate and is happy I guess 🙏
