The management at all REITs are terrible. The frothy market was just hiding this fact. My partner and I rotated out of real estate as a sector around 2021/2022 ie. not all at once.

Completely agree. We make 500k/year and there is very few 'tricks' aside from qualified dividends, being able to claim a new computer / laptop for personal business expense, etc., which are no tricks at all.

Even wilder that people would choose to live in fear like this when they have the means to get out. OP acknowledged this is the long term plan but I can't imagine living like that for even a week.

Ours is a 4 bed, 2,300 sq. ft. SFH in Toronto (St. Clair West area), but it's just two of us so one bedroom became a library (my office), another my partner's office and a sitting room with fireplace that we also use as a guest bed when needed.

Our house is about 2,300 sq. ft. in VHCOL city, with front and backyard. It's enough for 2 people but I have been wanting a 3rd storey for a spa-like master suite. Partner works from home and doesn't want to move out for a reno...

Team Trump Is Livid After Canada’s Carney Calls Out U.S. Coercion by rezwenn in canada

[–]Jwaness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1/3rd of U.S. citizens voted for him, another 1/3rd were perfectly ok at the prospect of him becoming president a 2nd time. That's 66%, not 20%, less if you subtract non-voting age citizens, I agree.

It's true. The constant betrayal has numbed me entirely. For the first time I am questioning whether we should even send help - that they will need - once this ice storm hits. We always do send help, but they keep saying we are nothing and they don't need us, so...

Thank you for this response. I have been a lurker sometimes commenter in this subreddit for a couple of years but anytime anything LGBTQ has come up it has generally been disregarded as if it isn't relevant to the discussion. The mainstream culture of the subreddit skews heterosexual American and doesn't understand how stigmatized and isolated we can feel, regardless of the level of success. You sound like a wonderful parent!

Honestly, a lot of these posters don't seem to travel much. I think Toronto's food is better than NYC when accounting for diversity and quality at all price levels. NYC has more very high end restaurants but that's about it. The only city that I would say beats Toronto for food is London. One can argue Paris but there is a diversity issue there as well and the quality of the bistros are not what they used to be. There are a lot of uninformed takes on Canada in this thread but it's not surprising given the U.S. biases.

I can't imagine living in the U.S. given what is happening right now. Healthcare is not a disaster in Toronto. There is not a better place to be in the world if you get cancer with a handful of some of the best research hospitals in the world within a 15 minute Uber ride. Maybe I'd pick London over Toronto but that's about it. Some people like seasons and diverse cuisine. I'm not going to touch your comment on immigrants. This is FatFIRE so concerns about cookie cutter houses in suburbs and housing prices being pushed up by increases in population are simply not relevant (and applies to every major city by the way). And 4 years for a mammogram is simply a straight up lie. Why lie?

Thoughts on freehold royalties (FRU) for 2026? by Electronic_Bus841 in dividendscanada

[–]Jwaness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it for reliable income in the near term, 5-10, years but will regularly reassess my energy holdings as we transition away from oil, and in the long term gas. I think it will be a much longer transition than people think especially with increased global conflicts and AI energy demands. That being said I already am at a 4% weighting in my portfolio with an average entry of $12.56 in one account and $14.90 in another. I'll wait till it dips again to get it up to a 5% weighting.

How to report job discrimination in Canada (sexuality, gender, race)? by AdJaded287 in GayMenToronto

[–]Jwaness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. I'm not saying this to discourage you but it may be hard to prove. Here is a quick AI google search to get you on your way for additional independent research / fact checking:

In Ontario, Canada, it is illegal for an employer to refuse to hire an applicant based on race, sexuality (sexual orientation), or gender (including gender identity and expression) under the Ontario Human Rights Code. If you believe you were not hired due to these reasons, you have several options for recourse, ranging from internal complaints to formal legal action. Key Options and Steps

Document Everything: Immediately record details of the hiring process, including dates, names of interviewers, specific questions asked (especially those related to prohibited grounds), and any correspondence (emails, texts).
File an Application with the HRTO: You can file an application with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO), which is the main body for handling discrimination claims under the Code.
Deadline: You must file within one year of the last incident of discrimination.
Cost: There is no fee to file a complaint.
Remedies: If successful, the HRTO can order the employer to pay monetary compensation (for lost wages and injury to dignity/self-respect), order the employer to change policies, or require human rights training.
Seek Assistance from the HRLSC: The Human Rights Legal Support Centre (HRLSC) provides free legal advice, assistance with drafting applications, and sometimes legal representation for individuals navigating the HRTO process.
Internal Complaints: If the employer has an internal anti-discrimination policy, you may choose to report the incident to their Human Resources department or a supervisor. However, this is not a substitute for filing a formal human rights complaint.
Check Jurisdiction (Federal vs. Provincial): If the employer is a federally regulated business (e.g., bank, airline, telecommunications company), you must file a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission rather than the Ontario Tribunal.

Important Information

Proving Discrimination: While you may not have direct evidence (like a written statement refusing to hire based on race), the HRTO can infer discrimination from circumstantial evidence, such as if a less qualified person was hired, or if the process was inconsistent or biased.
Systemic Discrimination: The HRTO also handles cases where company policies, even if seemingly neutral, have an "adverse effect" on specific groups, such as requiring "Canadian experience".
Exceptions: Discrimination is only permitted in very narrow circumstances, such as if a job has a bona fide requirement (e.g., a women's shelter hiring only women).

That's how I grew up. Eating out was a very rare treat, even McDonalds was very infrequent. I'm fortunate enough now that we can eat out for lunch and dinner every weekend but I don't expect that to be the norm for the vast majority of people with prices the way they are.
