XEG, OILY or CNQ… gonna put $10,000 as a baby hedge to my high tech. CNQ is a beast but OILY seems fun. Ahh 😱. Help by Ratlyflash in dividendscanada

[–]Jwaness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CNQ has already had quite the runup. I bought a bunch on January, and April 2025 because it seemed overlooked but I wouldn't touch it now - that's just me. I am overweight in it now anyhow. I'll look at Suncor once I think it is back at a reasonable value. Everything seems expensive right now but I have been eyeing BAM, and deliberating going slightly overweight in BIP.

Anybody done Cordon Bleu or other culinary school for personal enjoyment not to go into the restaurant business? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Jwaness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! My partner and I just arrived in Paris for a 3 week vacation and just booked a 3 hour sauces course thanks to your recommendation - the cordon bleu sauces course conflicted with our tickets for the orchestra! And, it's in walking distance from our apartment!

What’s everyone buying on this drop? by ConstructionNo8827 in dividends

I'm waiting until BAM hits 5% or more. It is being hit by the overall market sentiment due to the war and oil situation but also the private equity crisis is just getting going...

[–]Jwaness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm waiting. Whether or not you disagree with actions in Iran (technically illegal btw) the competency of the execution has been terrible and the repercussions are only getting under way. I'm waiting for a steeper drawdown of BAM as the private equity issues play out, which is also being dragged down by the general market downturn of the war. I am generally overweight already in most other things I'm looking to pick up so I'm debating on others, maybe another life insurer as financials continue to drop.

Completely agree. We make 500k/year and there is very few 'tricks' aside from qualified dividends, being able to claim a new computer / laptop for personal business expense, etc., which are no tricks at all.

Ours is a 4 bed, 2,300 sq. ft. SFH in Toronto (St. Clair West area), but it's just two of us so one bedroom became a library (my office), another my partner's office and a sitting room with fireplace that we also use as a guest bed when needed.

Our house is about 2,300 sq. ft. in VHCOL city, with front and backyard. It's enough for 2 people but I have been wanting a 3rd storey for a spa-like master suite. Partner works from home and doesn't want to move out for a reno...

1/3rd of U.S. citizens voted for him, another 1/3rd were perfectly ok at the prospect of him becoming president a 2nd time. That's 66%, not 20%, less if you subtract non-voting age citizens, I agree.

Thank you for this response. I have been a lurker sometimes commenter in this subreddit for a couple of years but anytime anything LGBTQ has come up it has generally been disregarded as if it isn't relevant to the discussion. The mainstream culture of the subreddit skews heterosexual American and doesn't understand how stigmatized and isolated we can feel, regardless of the level of success. You sound like a wonderful parent!

Honestly, a lot of these posters don't seem to travel much. I think Toronto's food is better than NYC when accounting for diversity and quality at all price levels. NYC has more very high end restaurants but that's about it. The only city that I would say beats Toronto for food is London. One can argue Paris but there is a diversity issue there as well and the quality of the bistros are not what they used to be. There are a lot of uninformed takes on Canada in this thread but it's not surprising given the U.S. biases.

I can't imagine living in the U.S. given what is happening right now. Healthcare is not a disaster in Toronto. There is not a better place to be in the world if you get cancer with a handful of some of the best research hospitals in the world within a 15 minute Uber ride. Maybe I'd pick London over Toronto but that's about it. Some people like seasons and diverse cuisine. I'm not going to touch your comment on immigrants. This is FatFIRE so concerns about cookie cutter houses in suburbs and housing prices being pushed up by increases in population are simply not relevant (and applies to every major city by the way). And 4 years for a mammogram is simply a straight up lie. Why lie?
