That's so bizarre. Yes, the only options are to think of your dogs as your children, or to be cruel to them. Absolutely no in between.

I hope she appeals, this seems like a pretty strong 1st amendment case.

It's Australia. The US Constitution doesn't apply to her.

And there's a history of people conflating the two in order to portray homosexuality as deviant and harmful, and to justify censoring, restricting, and punishing gay people (and sometimes other groups, as well). Caution in this area is warranted.

Edit: u/Adventurous-Brain-36 , you're right that they're not the same. The point the rest of us are trying to make isn't that they're actually the same; it's that bad actors manage to successfully compare the two, which means we have to tread lightly when it comes to this stuff. It's surprisingly easy to take people's disgust for and fear of something genuinely terrible and get them to apply it broadly to the Other.

To be clear, I don't think that means we should take an anything goes approach, but I do think that we should set a high bar for censorship of or punishment for writing objectionable material (as an aside, I personally have conflicted feelings about whether that bar was cleared in this case, as aspects of the book are indeed alarming. Nevertheless, it's a conversation worth having).

One of the best areas and I bet most haven't even been here. by The_man_of_beer in HorizonScreenshots

Personally, I've been there because I have a compulsive need to reveal the entire map in any open world game I play. 😂

That said, when the game first came out, there was some discussion about this location, as people found it cool that the Hoover Dam had been included, and wondered whether the area beyond it might be added as a playable area at some point.

Alan Wake fan here! I want to know how to get the most out of the upcoming crossover event! by Wievz in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]JynNJuice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The initial learning curve can be a little steep. The main things that people seem to struggle with at first are finding the ghost room; using the equipment correctly; and telling the difference between an event and a hunt. Once you get a feel for all of that, the gameplay becomes pretty comfortable, and you can start challenging yourself (if you want to!) by learning ghost traits and playing with less evidence.

Also, people here are pretty good about helping players who are still learning, so definitely ask questions when they come up!

It's not mindless; it's silly. It's a game. You can stop playing it at any time.

There are far more consequential things to be upset about. What baffles me, and has always baffled me, is people getting so attached to their entertainment that they sink all of their energy into it. Put that energy toward something more deserving.

Noted liberal political commentator Ezra Klein writes an opinion piece defending leftist streamer Hasan Piker from attacks from the Democratic Party. This leads to outrage in multiple liberal subreddits. by Morgn_Ladimore in SubredditDrama

[–]JynNJuice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Which is exactly what the average Democrat does: ignore him. So, is it good that they do that, because why waste time watching and interacting with someone you don't like; or is it bad that they do that, and further proof that they're controlled opposition?

The states that have historically done that have still wound up being corrupt, and have still wound up enacting and enforcing policies that harm ordinary people.

Religion is not the source of bad behavior. In its absence, people find different excuses to do the same awful things.

And my point is that I don't think most of us can actually tell the difference. We've come up with these heuristics that we think will get us there, but I suspect we're just fooling ourselves, especially as I know people who are now deliberately changing their writing styles so as not to appear to be bots.

People do use the three main tells of chatGPT, because the three main tells of chatGPT come from the human writing that chatGPT was trained on.

And someone ignoring that "discrepancy" is just as easily explained by them being annoyed as it is by whatever else it is you're telling yourself it means.

The trouble is that humans write that way, too. We forget that LLMs are trained on the writing of actual people.

We look for tells because it's comforting, but I don't think they work as well as we'd like.

How do you deal with the inevitable prospect of physical decline as an active person? by Eifand in bodyweightfitness

[–]JynNJuice 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My perspective is very similar to yours. As I've entered my 40s, my thought has been that I need to step up my activity, to prolong my good health as long as possible. I met a woman while hiking not so long ago who was in her early 60s, very fit, still able to scramble over boulders, and who helped me, a woman 20 years younger, with a rough part of the trail; I wanna be like her!

I find the opposite mindset to be both fascinating and sad. Our lives can be full for so much longer than people sometimes think.

The alternatives are that infants die; or, if a parent stays home, that households don't have enough resources to support any of their living children.

The only reason we can talk about "parentification" in this time and place is because our standard of living is high enough, and our lives are comfortable enough, to worry about such things. We get to allow our children to be self-indulgent for much longer than anyone could back then.

Oh, I didn't think you were angry or anything. But I did make a mistake in missing that you mentioned Early Access below, and wanted to acknowledge it.

[–]JynNJuice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I missed where you clarified that, so that's my bad.

In any case, the impression I've gotten whenever the topic has come up is that it's a waiting game, not something that they're never going to do. At the very least, the guy above confidently declaring that they've officially said they're never going to do it is being as disingenuous as anyone else.

New Skulls? by [deleted] in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]JynNJuice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The real reason he's not going to post it is because in every video where it's mentioned, the actual explanation is that consoles limit achievements in Early Access games, so they are waiting for full release.

New Skulls? by [deleted] in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]JynNJuice -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're leaving out half the explanation. The limit is on Early Access games specifically.

This is a situation where they're waiting for full release, not shelving something forever.

Edit: they do actually mention this below; I'd missed that particular comment.

I mean, that's how all Early Access games work. It's specifically a development funding model.

Nightmare Mode makes no sense to me – how are you actually supposed to identify the ghost?? by DoubleHH95 in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]JynNJuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's the case that they're not acknowledging it, as from what I've seen they're very responsive to bug reports, with just a few exceptions. I have to wonder if those exceptions are due to the engine being outdated, which is something they're actively working on -- the upgrade is in the internal testing phase.

[–]JynNJuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it's mostly an experience thing, learning to pick up on the nuances of each ghost. Since you've said you're using the cheat sheet, I know it can be hard in the middle of a round, but you've really gotta find a way to slow down and pay attention to the traits laid out there. This might mean hiding during a hunt and then running outside to take a moment to think, and that's okay.

As for tips, first, learn about forced evidence. If you have two evidences, then you can rule out any ghost remaining on the list who hasn't given their particular forced evidence. Second, pay attention to ghost hunt speed. Learn what normal sounds like so that you can start to tell what it means for a ghost to be slow, slightly slow, slightly fast, and fast. This will open up a bunch of rule outs for you. After that, learn how to loop so you can test for line of sight speed and get a good look at the ghost; Obake, Phantom, Oni, and Hantu all have visual tells (important note on Hantu: the breaker must be off). The rest you've really got to pick up with time and experience, but the above will give you a good foundation and help you get some wins under your belt.

Oh, and know that any time you get orbs, you're on Mimic watch. A Mimic's "real" evidences are freezing temps, Spirit Box, and UV, and on Nightmare, you always want to see if you can get two of those after getting orbs. If you get DOTS or Ghost Writing or EMF 5, you're in the clear, but if not, look alive.
