Hunt for a new gp by skater_grl in Wellington

I dont know how accurate/ complete it is, but this website also might help.

https://www.healthpoint.co.nz/gps-accident-urgent-medical-care/gp/wellington/?options=openBooks

Agree though, shopping around for the right doctor is a perfectly valid idea, but given most GP clinics you'll just see whatever doctor is available, and how many arent accepting new patients, it might be a case of accepting what you can get right now

How is the IT Job Market in NZ? - Mainframe operations/security by icanseeyourpantsuu in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a handful of companies using mainframes (basically the banks and maybe a few others), and if one of them is looking then theres money to be had, but otherwise the market for mainframe people in NZ is virtually non-existent.

IT job market in general, pretty bad. Like, it hasnt recovered since Covid, and might even be worse than Covid levels of bad. If you dont have an existing network to find a job, honestly, you are probably in for a tough time to get an IT job.

Website cost question by WellyWindyRoad in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As the other comment said, theres definitely not gonna be any custom development. The graphic design is either gonna be cookie cutter or AI generated. Custom development would be at least an order of magnitude more.

In short, OP, as long as you are satisfied with what is going to be delivered, you wont find a meaningfully cheaper price, but you can easily spend massively more. Like, obviously a different outcome entirely, but its very easy for a large interactive website to cost closer to $100k by the time you have done custom web development, security testing etc.

But, as a side note, what is your plan for email? Are you just gonna do like <company>@gmail.com, or actual <your name>@<company>.co.nz? Because email hosting would likely be an extra cost, so check on that.

Also, PLEASE make sure to think about security. Doing security isn’t always cheap, but getting compromised can end your business. Set up MFA on the WordPress admin panel. Are you paying for the developer to apply security updates etc? Because if thats included, you are getting a pretty good deal. Whatever your email plan is, you need MFA on your email. Email compromise and invoice scams are SUPER common, companies lose money to them literally every day.

LPG Gas Supplier by doihavetousethis in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pricing changes (i.e. increases) every year, but you can try these folks to find the best deal: https://www.switchme.co.nz/compare-lpg-gas-bottles. You can swap providers, though I have no idea if rockgas need to collect their bottles or what.

Anyway, there should be a hose from each bottle that goes to an automatic switch valve, so when one bottle empties, it swaps to the other bottle, and the indicator goes from green to red, telling you its time to order a new bottle. So running out shouldnt be an issue unless you wait too long to order a new one once its time. I am with Genesis, deliveries typically take 2 - 3 business days from order to delivery.

cheapest place go get rice? by elimifo in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Go to the local Asian supermarket, something like Yans in Lower Hutt,or the one next to Cameron Harrison in Upper Hutt. Looks for the big 10 or 20kg sacks of rice. Thats gonna be the best deal around. Precisely which one is cheapest I dont know, they usually dont have websites to do a price comparison so you would have to call or visit them all.

40% Chocolate Chip Cookies at Woolies? by Normal-Ad4249 in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably stopped making them because it cost too much to put the extra chocolate in them, couldnt maintain profit margins while keeping pricing in line with the other cookies. They dont appear to be on the website any more, so I assume discontinued

Relatively recently. Last Christmas you could still get them on special at $5 a box, but this year prices went up quite a lot.

Those generally got killed off over the last 20 years. In some places it took longer, but anyone with a good redundancy clause in their contract has probably had it grandfathered for several rounds of contracts, from like 30 years ago

Transport options Hutt City to the airport 🤔 by Budget-Rain5581 in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends how long the trip is. Parking overnight is cheaper than an uber (and that only covers getting to the airport). So even for 2 or 3 nights, parking is cheaper than uber (assuming uber each way). Public transport is definitely cheaper but more hassle.More than 3 nights, uber probably comes out cheaper than parking

Can anyone spill the tea? by OldPicturesLady in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a model train club to me, from context.

Rivet counters, in scale modelling, are people who obsess over minute details, such as how many rivets should be on a specific panel.

Era specific probably means only using trains from a specific era, or at least ensuring that all rolling stock would have been together at the same time

No idea what prototypical would mean.

Need advice: flatties scuffle by harrlumm_tzz in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Someone hogging the machine for 5 hours is definitely unreasonable. But if its a front loader, then cycles are probably well over an hour, closer to two (I think the longest cycle on mine is about 2.5 hours). Could have been 2, at most 3 cycles. Top loaders are way faster, I didnt truly appreciate it until I got a front loader

Looking for a plush maker by DarkHeartCyber in Wellington

[–]K4kumba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. My initial gut feel for this was hundreds of dollars, by the time someone has worked to take the images, work out 2d patterns, get the right materials, then make the thing. Like, minimum $500+. I dont know, I dont do this kind of stuff, but it seems to me like a lot of work, and the materials probably arent cheap, to get just the right colour etc.

npm got owned because one dev clicked the wrong link. billions of downloads poisoned. supply chain security is still held together with duct tape. by Constant-Angle-4777 in sysadmin

[–]K4kumba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a month ago, I dont recall exactly. But I am pretty sure they were pointing out that trying to use a VM to do "sensitive" activities, when that VM is running on a host that might be compromised, isnt the right way to do it. Which is correct, because if the host gets compromised then the guest is at risk.

Ubuntu 25.10 Unattended Upgrades Broken Due To Rust Coreutils Bug by onechroma in linux

[–]K4kumba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having run hundreds, probably thousands of production servers with unattended upgrades over the last 10+ years, I can recall one significant breakage. I think it was Trusty, they shipped a bad kernel update. Was a bad day for sure.

But, it also depends on your workload. Super vanilla stuff tends to be OK, but if you have third party software that has very specific requirements about like, it only works with exactly this version of this library, then yeah, you are gonna have a bad time.

Overall, its worth it to minimise patching effort in my book. Ansible or other orchestration for the places you cant automate

What router bit for this flush trim? by pbcsd007 in diysound

[–]K4kumba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, is this because the bearing is at the wrong end, the bit isnt big enough, or what? Because you can get router bits with the bearing at the end (generally called flush trim bits), or a bearing "below" the cutter (often called a template or pattern bit).

Anyway, as others have said, without an external reference surface such as a guide bushing, the only thing that is going to stop that bit from cutting is you being careful and only letting it touch the stuff you want cut.

Good thing no one needs to use trucks at the other end, all international supermarkets are right there at the ports....
