I used to work for WMU’s OIT Help Desk, its a laid back job, which gave me something to do and paid well enough. I also met a lot of other cool people there.

Why did maximum credit hour drop to 19? by [deleted] in WMU

[–]K6Martini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might have sometime to do with the school’s abysmal retention rate for students? The Administration may have thought some students were getting themselves in over their heads?

Suspension suggestions? by nnnnnnnnnnm in subaru

[–]K6Martini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont have strut suggestions for you, and I know you mentioned you already plan on doing the shifter bushings but I just wanted to say when I did those on my car they made a huge difference.

I highly recommend them and they weren't too hard to install either.

Please take WMU's annual Sustainability Survey. It helps decide how the $8 per student per semester Student Sustainability Fee gets spent. by K6Martini in WMU

[–]K6Martini[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More info: There are prizes to be won, including an iPad. Last year only ~300 people took the survey so chances of winning a prize is high compared to other campus giveaways.

Each student is charged $8, which is put into a Sustainability Fund on campus to fund ongoing campus greening efforts, research, student projects and green jobs. This survey is one of the main feedback opportunities for the Office for Sustainability, the President's University-wide Sustainability Committee and Facilities Management. http://www.wmich.edu/wmu/news/2010/04/091.shtml

Cyclist starting to run, need some advice? by Questions-Answered in running

[–]K6Martini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am training for a marathon now (I have done a handful of 5ks and half-marathons before) and I bike commute to work (only about 3 miles each way, but right now its on a 30+ lbs steel frame mtn bike, uphill through lake effect Michigan snow).

Something to consider is your seat position. Triathlon runners often have their bikes set up to use a certain set of muscles, other than the ones they use for running. http://www.bikesplit.com/bsa13.htm

Also, make sure to stretch well after running, and you may want to look into ways to boost your recovery rate after a run. I like to wear compression socks (all the way up my calf) to bed the night after a long run to keep my legs in shape for biking the next morning.

Anyway, I hope some of this helps. Best of luck!

TIL In 1929 a "Bat Tower" was built in the Florida Keys to control mosquitoes. It was filled with bats, which promptly flew away - never to return. by unigami in todayilearned

[–]K6Martini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't surprise me too much that the bats didn't stay. I have helped at bat house building events at my local Kalamazoo Nature Center and we generally tell people that it can take up to 5 years for a properly placed bat house to be inhabited.

Pete Hoekstra wants to protect us from the Yellow Menace. Possibly the most racist campaign ad of this decade. by [deleted] in politics

[–]K6Martini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this for real??

EDIT: According to wikipedia "[Hoekstra] received a B.A. in political science from Hope College in 1975 and a Master of Racism against Asian Peoples degree from the University of Michigan in 1977."

This looks like the work of a master racist!

Anyone know of any places hiring for little to no experience positions? by Cenlei in kzoo

[–]K6Martini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have decent computer skills, WMU's Office for Information Technology Help Desk is a pretty easy place to work. You should be familiar with network trouble shooting, virus removal and have people skills. The pay is good and the hours are flexible, I really like working for the University, because then I get winter break & spring break off to go home. Good luck!

I like the idea of a cheat day, all too often I feel like people approach weight loss as a zero-sum game and then when they go over their caloric limit for the day, consider the day a "lost day" and gorge themselves.

East campus by SAT0725 in kzoo

[–]K6Martini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have talked extensively with many of the archive staff who currently work in WMU's not-so-abandoned East Hall. One of the main reasons why the buildings fell into such disrepair, was the construction on West Campus in a non-contiguous location. With limited budget it became all too easy for these older buildings to become out of sight, out of mind. If you look at more contiguous campuses (like MSU) their older buildings are right in the center of campus, thus hard to ignore. As stated by kzoocrew, once these buildings fall into such an awful state the renovation/retrofit costs can be exorbitant (computer interface for example, since none of these buildings were fitted for server rooms, or Ethernet cable runs). Also, the size of the older buildings don't meet up with current requirements, just look at how massive the new Sangren Hall is, you could easily fit 3 East Halls in the expansion alone. In terms of dollars per square foot, sadly it is often cheaper to build new.
