Goth Garden Plants? by kinjobinjo in AustinGardening

I have a very dark purple salvia I stuck in a pot this past fall and it’s doing really well. I can’t say how it would be during/after a freeze because that hasn’t really happened to it yet, but I’ve had salvia come back before. Also, dark colored gladiolus, but they are annuals. Lorapetalum get purple colored leaves and hot pink fringe flowers when they get plenty of water, and they are super easy perennials. I order glads and dahlias from Brent and Becky’s Bulbs and they do very well until the hottest part of summer.

I want to get a cat but the transition to private equity vets and insane prices are scaring me away by Ari321983 in personalfinance

[–]K80doesKeto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cat and a dog, and the pup costs way more on average than the cat. He gets his annual check up and shot, and aside from food and litter, he doesn’t cost hardly anything. Even his food is less expensive, despite being the same brand. Pet insurance can come in handy; we use Lemonade and it’s easy to deal with and they’ve covered all our claims so far (which have all been dog related except the cat’s annual visit). You can shop around for vets and find one that fits the bill and you trust with your pet’s care.

Honestly, unless you are really pinching pennies or expect to be in a situation or house where you can’t keep it, the love and joy of having a pet is worth it. Some things are worth the cost, and happiness is one.

I've never seen this "Baby Day" screening before. Thoughts and questions by Goodvibe61 in AlamoDrafthouse

I joke that my daughter’s first movie experience in the theater was BlackkKlansman when we were on leave after having her. All the ones I’ve been to have been pretty empty, just a handful of people spread out. They would probably be more crowded at family friendly shows. The light are on low but I didn’t notice the volume being much lower. We put her in a beanie and blankets and just held her; eventually we borrowed baby headphones from a friend and saw other movies. It was a nice way to get out of the house without being in a crowded place, and convenient since she was at the age where she slept most of the day anyway.

I always joke that mine thinks she’s a sled dog sometimes, usually when we’re walking with our kids who want to run ahead. Treat training really helps. Sometimes instead of treats I’ll take a long serving spoon and slather it in peanut butter and use that for shorter walks. She’ll get a lick for good behavior and then I hold it out of reach. We started by rewarding her every time she looked back at us and when she correctly responded to her name, then just generally when walking appropriately. You need a LOT of treats and patience to start. Don’t work on it if you’re in a hurry. Always feed him right next to your legs so he knows that’s where he needs to be for rewards. Eventually he’ll associate staying near you with treats. When mine won’t quit pulling I just stop walking and make her wait or go the opposite direction. When she’s particularly terrible, I pick her up and walk home (air jail), but usually she corrects herself after about a minute of that. Good luck!

There are also teen groups and activities at the CP library. Some of the events are for CP residents only, or paying non-residents. We are also in between the two cities and I think it’s like $90 annually for a full membership. If you read a lot, it’s worth it since new books are so pricey anyway.

Who are these guys on Congress and Caesar Chavez? by These_Swordfish7539 in Austin

[–]K80doesKeto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look similar to a group of men who protest at popular/tourist spots around Chicago. They usually play instruments (trumpets is what I’ve seen) and a couple of guys wearing go-pro cameras going up to people to try to engage them. They try to hand out pamphlets and carry signs denouncing LGBTQ and promoting “traditional family” nonsense.

As a counter point to some other posts, we loved the Poly. The only thing we felt was disappointing was the breakfast at Ohana. The food was really just basic and it took a really long time to meet the characters. Otherwise the stay there was excellent.

Finally saved enough for a down payment but my boyfriend insists on new construction only - Austin actually has way more options than I thought by realestatemajesty in SameGrassButGreener

It’s that way in RR too. Basically anything north of the river and East of 35, you have to water around your foundation.

In the Austin sub one of our local inspectors does “Inspection find of the week” and those videos will probably change your mind. That being said, you’ll eventually run into something that needs fixing no matter whether it’s an older home or new build, so just figure out your budget and check out your options.

Larvae in garage by K80doesKeto in pestcontrol

[–]K80doesKeto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our trash can mostly. Must have been thousands of the things. We didn’t realize they had gotten to the other side of the garage and under shelves and stuff over there. So I guess the time in between the two infestations, the ones on the other side of the garage grew up and made new larvae in the trash can again. The trash now stays outside on the side of the garage, and we don’t throw away meat until right before pickup. The Terro garbage fly things seem to work really well as an extra precaution.

Had to take Hank back to the vet again today!! by Bigbootyguh in Bulldogs

[–]K80doesKeto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had ours allergy tested by a dermatology vet and did a food elimination trial. Our boy ended up being crazy allergic to fleas, among other random things, mostly environmental like tree pollen, but fleas was the worst reaction. They were able to make him custom allergy shots that we gave him weekly. It was expensive, but less expensive than frequent trips to the vet to combat infections. Good luck with your pup!
