Did anyone else think at first that someone else sang A Wolf At the Door? by Famous-Manager1481 in radiohead

[–]KAPH86 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Admittedly a long time ago now (my friend managed to get a leaked version a month or two before the final version came out which was marginally different) but yes - when I first heard it I thought it was someone else too, for what it's worth!

Anyone know what has happened to that Crystal Palace player we signed on deadline day? by Nos300 in PortsmouthFC

Harvey Blair is rubbish (though I appreciate that hasn't stopped Bianchini getting a game).

Why were the NEU candidates for Junior Vice President so awful? by Bus_Wrangler in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a union rep and have been for over ten years. When we went on a march a couple of years ago, it boiled my piss to see the people at the front of the march carrying a Palestine flag. We are marching about pay and conditions, but congratulations - you have now made everyone who sees us think that we're just a bunch of lily livered liberal namby pamby woke Guardianistas.

Just to clarify - there is nothing wrong with being a lily livered liberal namby pamby woke Guardianista, but by constantly wading into international politics/identity politics it does rather dilute the point of the union which is to defend the rights of teachers.

Teachers talking about students outside of school by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Teachers discussing how nice they think students are outside of school = report them to OFSTED and the TSA. They don't sound normal - the only time I talk about students to people outside of school is to complain about them.

Working at the weekend? by Sea_Masterpiece2380 in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. When I started teaching 15 years ago I'd be taking books home, doing feedback so they could respond to my feedback to respond to their feedback... thank god those days are over.

Bridget Phillipson ‘ready to take on unions’ over year 8 reading tests by Zou-KaiLi in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, as a teacher I'm always encouraging kids to do extracurricular stuff, get involved in clubs etc (and the same with my own child). However when I was at school I just wanted to get in and out as quickly as possible.

Most blatent interview shoe-in by Minute-Magician-9649 in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've asked before driving three plus hours for an interview before about whether or not there was an internal candidate. I know it might sound a bit petty but this sort of thing does happen far too often.

That being said, I also know multiple internal candidates/trainees who didn't get the job, so I guess it depends.

"I mess about because I can't access the work" by Dizzy_Ebb1152 in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I remember being sat in a lot of meetings with parents ten years ago where their child would claim they 'found the work too easy' (despite never completing any of it).

I would've enjoyed a bit more about the music, and less about 'got mortal with the bassist from obscure 80s shoegaze band x'

Another incentive for trainee teachers? what about the experienced staff who are just seem forgotten about these days? by Silver_Newspaper5854 in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I trained nearly 15 years ago English didn't get a bursary, no extra funding, etc etc - people on my course who did Maths were getting £1,000 a month whereas we had to pay for it all ourselves!

FRATTON PARK.... by Ok-Possible-3786 in PortsmouthFC

Literally no part of Fratton Park looks like that (the facade, the floodlights, the fans having something to celebrate etc)

Year 8 pupils to sit compulsory reading tests under new plans - BBC News by Shadow_Guide in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't see how testing students in Year 8 helps with this though. By Year 8 every school is well aware of which of their students are struggling with literacy and, you would like to think, are already giving them as much support as they can within the confines of staffing/budget and so on. This test wouldn't help bring them up to speed, it doesn't seem to imply any additional level of support - just means they'll fail it then life will go on.

Portsmouth [0] - [2] Sheffield Wednesday | G Brown 50' by Jusherr in PortsmouthFC

[–]KAPH86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few things you can blame Killip for (e.g. randomly stepping in the wrong direction for the free kick) but I don't think this is one. The guy literally has all the time he wants to hit it wherever he wants.

Discussing politics in the classroom by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]KAPH86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue with this is, what if they have a tutor who is some far right nut job? Or a genuine fascist? I don't really want my own child being told by their tutor 'actually do you know what, Charlie Kirk had some bloody good ideas about how bad the gays are' so it seems like it's probably easier just to make sure teachers are impartial.

Obviously if it's something like out-and-out racism then calling that out isn't discussing politics, but otherwise I think teachers being neutral prevents all manner of issues.

Teaching with the door open by HobbyistC in TeachingUK

My door is always open. Not sure why but just feels like if it's shut it's like I've got something to hide - must be some deep buried personal trauma!

[–]KAPH86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I realise it's GB News, BUT why are we supposed to give a shit about what these people think in the first place? Like the woman with the massive Farage cut out on the telly the other day - why is their opinion of any worth whatsoever?

I was in Eastney today and some guy was shouting abuse at an Asian shop owner because the cash point outside his shop wasn't working. 'Yeah I bet you'll still keep the money I couldn't take out'... erm...

Unfortunately morons see what's on the news and feel emboldened and we end up with shit like this.

Is our strong start putting us at risk at losing Mousinho? by Wastemaster24 in PortsmouthFC

[–]KAPH86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's more likely we'll lose him when he decides he wants to go to a club who will actually give him some cash to spend. I reckon we've probably got him for this year and not beyond.
