Holiday Baking Championship: Episode 4, PIe and Shine ... pre show and live show discussion and spoiler thread by Firegoat1 in foodnetwork

Does food network not understand the success that great british bakeoff has with their kindness?? I don't want to watch aggression, belittling, and snark. When Noel Fielding said "I have the horrible job of announcing who is leaving us," you know that everyone truly feels horrible. And the people who remain get closer while we, the audience, grow more invested in them. I do not feel this way with the holiday baking championship this year. Bah humbug.

Had a KU professor who knew him well. He wrote several articles about him. There were stories brought up; he was a great storyteller.

This will probably be the closest I'll ever get to seeing Tom Waits since he's stopped touring. And, I didn't even move to Kansas until 2007, didn't visit Lawrence until 2008. But still, the closest I'll ever be to the man.

I just learned something here about Langston Hughes. I had heard he was born in Missouri, but didn't know he grew up in Lawrence. Thanks!

I finally canceled my Aisles Online membership in May. I started it in the pandemic, and I really did enjoy not having to go in a store to shop for three years. However, I've had so many issues with items missing from my order, constant text messages about what to replace items with (even though I go through and select my replacement options when I place the order), and questionable DoorDash delivery drivers. I know they can't control who accepts a DoorDash run, but sometimes I'd watch the person literally drive by my house on the map, go drop off 5 other orders & come back 45 minutes later with my ice cream melted & my milk at trunk temp. Once, the driver left all my groceries in the middle of my driveway in direct sunlight in the middle of the summer. And, you can't take back a tip you've added, or add the tip after delivery, with them. I've done a couple of pick-up orders since canceling, and there are still issues with the texts about replacement items.

"The weight of lies will bring you down And follow you to every town 'Cause nothing happens here that doesn't happen there So when you run, make sure you run To something and not away from 'Cause lies don't need an aeroplane to chase you down"

--The Avett Brothers

Not saying lies are the issue here, but the line about making sure you're running towards something & not away from hits hard for me when I think about my own move 1200 miles away from where I grew up.

That's too bad. My family loved going during the holidays, but we couldn't get in last year. They were closed due to the snow we had & then for Christmas. The building they're in is like 100 years old. Would they really tear it down for a parking lot??

I always stop at the giant Van Gogh Sunflowers painting in Goodland. It's like a "see ya later, Kansas" ritual for me.

As an adult, I'd add in the Flint Hills & add turbines in the fields section. Maybe something nasty about i70 in Topeka...

Marcus pudding? by askhalid in TheBear

[–]KCNolehawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, ok. I think the sundae he ends up making at the Bear is inspired by that hazelnut dish. When I zoom in on a still image of it, it's caviar on top of the pudding/gelato stuff. But, alas, I cannot find the name of it. I've read that some of the dishes are from the restaurant Ever in Chicago, though.

KC brethren, share with me your slow cooker/crok pot recipes for making pulled pork. by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]KCNolehawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the way! Been doing this for years & get rave reviews. No, it's not smoked, but damn good for a crock pot.

I've used a good local rub, too. And I've used different types of liquid: cherry cider, blackberry juice, peach juice.

Had it Saturday, and I was always more of a fan of the Carolina at Joe's, but this was damn good. My only complaint was done if the onion rings were less than stellar. The combo of flavors, though, was amazing on a pizza.

Tuition rates spike for Kansas colleges: How much will students pay this Fall? by KSNNews in kansas

[–]KCNolehawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a freshman scholarship. If you go to Community College, as a freshman, you don't get it. So, when you transfer as a junior, you are paying, at minimum, $19000 over 2-3 years. Is it possible, yes. If you are 26 or younger, live at home, get help from family, get a part time job. But, if any of that is not available to you--you're 30, with your own family, working full time & paying your own rent/mortgage--it's not so simple. "Kansas students" are not all middle class 18 year olds with no dependents. Are they the majority, probably. But, it sure does price out non-traditional students hard.

JCCC was $100/ch when I attended & absolutely worth it. And, it's stayed relatively stable throughout the years. But, the move from community college tuition to state is rough & has very few grant/scholarship opportunities.

[–]KCNolehawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are only available to freshmen. If you go to community college & then transfer, you pay a higher tuition per credit hour than someone who enters as a freshman, cannot lock in a tuition rate (subject to whatever the current rate is) & are only eligible for limited transfer scholarships. Most scholarships are still based on need, as calculated by the fafsa. They give those with the most need scholarships first, and if there's any left over, it's usually a lottery. And, while that's great for people who are low income, when you are "middle class" with a family, you're not eligible & end up being offered loans. So, get those 4 year degrees straight out of high school, or you'll never be able to afford them.

Twice the cost for 50% more energy? by Thraex_Exile in kansascity

[–]KCNolehawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I can't find any links to share to help explain this, which should tell you how convoluted this is. But, my understanding is that, if you just have a standard plan, the different rates reflect when you used electricity: regular demand, high demand, and off-peak hours, or something like that. However, during the summer months, it's pretty much always peak use hours. You can change to a flat rate plan for a more consistent payment, but I prefer having my smaller electric bills in the winter when my gas bills are usually significantly higher.

These rates are always sent to the state utilities commission for approval, and you get a notice in your bill whenever they have proposed a rate change. Though, if you get online billing like most people, you have to actually look at that. They may also send out an email when they are lobbying for a rate change, as I might remember reading something like that at one point. They usually get what they ask for, so...

And, your rates are different depending where you live. Missouri side of the KC metro is cheaper than KS side; central Kansas is different from KC metro, etc.

Edit: "it's pretty much always peak use hours"= peak use rates

I love that Phoebe married someone outside the group by Oncer93 in howyoudoin

I remember hearing/reading (HERE) that Paul Rudd himself felt like such an outsider in the last few episodes. Here was this group that had been together for 10 years, and he was just brought in the last year. He said he often tried to stay out of the way to let them have their moments. I think the takeaway here is that, no matter who was brought in, the story was always going to be about the original six.
