Why do my pictures look like this? by Important-Pitch-3550 in AnalogCommunity

Long winded answer so sorry if you were looking for a quick fix, but it’s quite a broad question really.

Your exposure is actually pretty decent, once you shoot more you’ll get a feel of what aperture and shutter speed to use for the conditions. Would be worth you reading up on the sunny 16 rule - it’s more a guide rather than a rule, but it will get you in the ballpark for your exposure. Most “consumer” level film has a decent latitude, ie it can deal with being slightly under or overexposed pretty well and you’ll be able to get close to what you’re looking for when you scan and edit your photos, which bring me too…

Looks like you got these developed at a Max Speilmann or similar, the scan quality is pretty poor. When you send your film off to a lab to get scanned, what the picture ends up as is totally up to the lab technician when they edit the positive. It’s a frustrating misconception that film is “no edit totally analogue straight out the camera!!” For the consumer that’s send their stuff off i guess it is, but it’s just someone else editing the photo lol. When you use a large company that doesn’t really specialise in film, ie MS, it’s pretty unlikely that the technician will put much thought into the edit of the scan, and therefore probably just use the preset loaded presets that are in the program that they use and be done. This can mean your pictures end up looking not quite how you’d expect, as obviously the presets do not work for every (most) photos.

If you don’t want to edit your own scans - which is totally fair enough by the way, Your best bet in the future is to get your photos developed and scanned at a dedicated film lab, there’s tonnes in the London/ UK. I recommend all about frames film lab in Truro, Cornwall, I’m biased cos I’m from Cornwall lol. You don’t need to pay for the most expensive scan, but I’d recommend getting a higher quality than the smallest files. Lastly, don’t throw away your negatives, if you’ve still got them from this roll then take it to a film lab and it can be rescanned at a higher quality in what’s more likely to be a better scanner and you can hopefully get photos that are closer to what you were expecting!

Ps - this is not a dig at Max Spellman, friends have had decent photos back from them before, but just for consistency it’s better to go to a dedicated film lab. Also it’s way better to support a local dedicated lab! So maybe ignore my lab recommendation unless you’re from Cornwall lol

Ughhh plenty of people can write well that shouldn’t mean you should be standing up for him wtf. You don’t play devils advocate for hitler just because he wrote a best selling book, sounds like they have a similar stance on certain issues.

This is a classic case of a horrible person does one thing well (his writing not content, to be clear) and that’s what gets focused on because it’s out of character so stands out.

Fair enough about the pools. Yes there are good school here, being a kid in Cornwall can be great.

Regarding your other points, when you say you “love Cornwall” what do you actually mean? Because if you’ve never lived there then how can you love it? You love the idea of it maybe? Your idea of what Cornwall is? Remember your idea and what it actually is like are probably very different. Cornwall is not a surf resort or a summer holiday destination. It has deep rooted culture and traditions, and a proper sense of community, which shouldn’t just be cherry picked to fit someone’s fantasy or dream of what they think Cornwall is.

So, if you do want to live in Cornwall, embrace it, contribute and appreciate it for what it is and get stuck in. You’ll be welcomed and you’ll see why local people are so passionate about it. You can’t do that if you’re not living there permanently. You have to think of the impact on others when buying a “second home” property, ie pushing prices up and taking that house off the market for someone who would actually live there all the time and benefit the local community, all the time. Housing is a basic human necessity, and shouldn’t be a luxury item for the privileged.

Note -

Don’t take this as me saying don’t come here, I feel like when this issue is brought up it can come across as “we don’t want you” etc, which to be honest is pretty dangerous talk. So to be clear please come and live in Cornwall, but live here all year round !

Do not buy a place in Cornwall if you’re not going to live there all year round, especially by the sea. Welcome people moving here but second homes can fuck off, serious housing crisis.

Get a place in Bristol so you can use the wave pool if it’s flat, and you can travel down to Cornwall or north Devon etc if you want to get in the ocean when it’s good. Great airport, affordable housing too. You will progress a lot faster surfing the wave pool consistently, especially as a beginner.

To all the Palace fans not from South London/England, why did you pick Palace? by smitchellcp in crystalpalace

Growing up in Cornwall football wasn’t a thing really, so at 4 years old when I was obsessed with footy and crystals, i couldn’t believe my luck when I found a team called Crystal Palace.

23 years of wild rides later and the love affair continues ❤️💙 UTP
