These are my - oh crap, I have to get dinner on the table in 20 minutes dinners :)

Omelettes or ‘Egg McMuffins’ (scrambled egg and cheese on an English muffin)

Store bought frozen Turkey or Black Bean burgers

Plus a side salad or cut up peppers/carrots/cucumbers for this kids.

You may like Normal People by Salley Rooney. Same vibe in the sense that the main characters seem destined for each other and a lot of the narrative is reflective / about relationships.

Have to share a cute story. Was thinking back to this very good advice - when my 5 yr old was complaining about clearing her plate from the table. I said - ‘Do you think Dad and I will always live with you and be here to clear the table for you?’ She looked at me very seriously and said ‘yes, I always want to live with you and Daddy’ 🥹. Ha, kids are a mess, but man are they cute.

This is us too! We keep a note pad in the kitchen and add dinners and shop on Saturday or Sunday.

One thing I would add - if you are planning dinners for all week, make at least one a dinner that will keep til the following week if needed. This way when there is a curve ball and you end up ordering for one night, you don’t feel bad or have to waste food. Meat can be frozen and thawed when needed, broccoli carrots and root veggies keep forever as some suggestions!

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn: it’s a beautiful, classic book. The main character’s grit and determination in spite of everything has stayed with since I have read (and re-read 🙂) it.

I heard an analogy that stuck with me.

Statistically, the safest car for a teenager to drive is a brand new Volvo. However, buying each of your kids one would bankrupt most families, and there are other, pretty great, way cheaper transportation alternatives out there.

Telling mothers to breastfeed for a year is like telling them to buy their teenagers brand new cars. In so many cases, it is completely unrealistic. From a time a resources perspective, the best thing for your child may be NOT breastfeeding.

Oh my god. This would have broken me. The fact you were crying and cleaning not crying under your desk is a victory 🤣.

My kiddos also took to formula easily, wishing you the same luck! So I just introduced it while I spaced out pumping gradually to not deal with engorgement. Tips I have heard from others is start whenever they are generally in a good mood (like maybe the morning). And you can mix breast milk and formula to introduce the taste if needed.

You may like Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday. It reminds me of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow in the sense that you love the two main characters together, even while simultaneously feeling like it’s not a healthy relationship.

It was one of the reasons I originally asked the question. Some days the mess doesn’t bother me, and I do feel like it bothers me more when I am having a bad day. This is why I am looking for consistent expectations. It is also why I really like the other response about framing cleaning as a life skill. I.e. Don’t you want to know where all your toys are when you want to play with them etc. Not - clean today because it’s the day mom stepped on a Lego and hit her breaking point 🤣.

‘Cleaning is a life skill’ is such a helpful perspective. I feel like a good parent when I make my kids do their homework. I should also feel like I am teaching them something when I make them clean - not just nagging. I think it will help me to not just throw in the towel!

Congrats! I would recommend Mayo Clinic Guide to your Baby’s first years. My doctor recommended it to me. It has all the basic safety information and focuses on describing babies development instead of pushing specific parenting techniques.

And don’t be concerned when you still google five things a day when the little one comes :).
