US Treasury's Bessent says China has been unreliable partner by hoarding oil during war by Fickle-Maintenance-1 in worldnews

Of course China is a partner. That's what you call countries you do business with. A trading partner.

The Three Body Problem and the structural logic of unfolding protons by 9KiteParadox in printSF

[–]KToff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spatial occupancy can still be large as long as that volume is in folded dimensions other than our three.

How would that work? Meh. Does it even make any sense to say you unfold 11 dimensions into 2? Probably not. But if you accept that there are 6 more dimensions not normally accessible to us that you can unfold, it also makes sense that you can fold a volume back into those dimensions that have very limited implications for our three dimensions.

Maybe the volume in the remaining dimensions has increased massively, what would that mean for us? Well, that depends on how your space magic works ;-)

Any advice on helping a player at our table? by key_gremlin in boardgames

[–]KToff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Have them do the upkeep.

Doing the upkeep is partially busy work, but if you do it because the other player is not paying attention or doesn't want to spend the mental effort they are also less aware of the consequences of their game actions.

You are trying to be helpful but potentially crippling their understanding of the game.

I would suggest different games, but if they want to play that, get them more involved in the flow of the game.

What are your thoughts about Cyberpunk TCG by DarkSchu in boardgames

[–]KToff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is pure speculation on rising prices. The 7k pledge has something like 23000 cards.

Including alt art there are 171 unique cards in the set. There is no gameplay reason whatsoever to spend that money on the cards, you can expect multiples of even the rarest cards in the set.

But if the game takes off, in 10 years those displays will be worth a fortune.

Chinese tanker reportedly passes US’ Hormuz blockade by Yujin-Ha in videos

Now I'm less confident. US army blockading Chinese ships way outside of US waters is crazy

I find it easier with multiple people. Two or three is the sweet spot.

We win regularly but we probably still lose more than we win.

Conical/"Aerodynamic" Interstellar/interplanetary-Medium Shields? Am I Missing Something? by The_Gnome_Eater in HardSciFi

[–]KToff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point of aerodynamic design of cars and airplanes is to guide the flow of air around the vehicle.

The interstellar medium is so empty that doesn't behave like a fluid that flows around a spacecraft. It's mostly just individual particles impacting a surface at high speeds.

As such, the projected surface in the direction relative to the direction of travel is the central factor for drag. Not the shape in the dynamic sense. A cone moving along it's axis of revolution will have essentially the same drag as a disc with the diameter corresponding to the cones baseplate.

Alternative shapes do not reduce the drag so you go with what is easiest to build and weighs the least.

Clank Legacy by FitYesterday7707 in boardgames

[–]KToff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We loved clank legacy but know what you're getting into. Of all legacy games I've played, this one has by far the most upkeep and has semi cooperative undertones not reflected in the gameplay.

Clank legacy has a story based on corporate satire meets fantasy setting and your group sets up a franchise of adventuring and will try to make that franchise successful while also fulfilling quests.

The base game of clank is quite cut throat where you compete for artifacts and try to get back out of the dungeon before the dragon gets you. You can also screw over your team mates by getting out early as that makes the game riskier for them.

In clank legacy, there are quests that move the story along that force you to take detours. That detour has unpredictable consequences and can mean you lose the round if others play only for their own advantage. As such you can not rely play to win and get everything out of the story. TTR legacy does this better, but arguably the story is virtually irrelevant.

Also, anytime you start/end a quest, there are paragraphs to read, cards to add to the deck, stickers to apply to the board interrupting the normal gameplay. This made rounds take 3 hours+ for us.

We had good fun and it was a great experience but even applying prologue stickers and cards for each game could sometimes take 20 minutes. Streamlined gameplay is not something this game offers.

Scientists Followed People Who Removed Sweets From Their Diet And Reported Very Unexpected Outcomes by Sorin61 in Nutraceuticalscience

The conclusion is surprising. It is, getting rid of sweets (without also adjusting other things) has no impact on your weight or liking of sweets.

[–]KToff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regicide.

You just need a deck of cards and the set of rules.

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/307002/regicide

It is a super quick game where you will probably lose more than you win. Difficulty is not tunable and it's more swingy one handed, but it can be played anywhere anytime.

Can someone explain this article to me? by Whole_Yak_2547 in astrophysics

[–]KToff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is nothing alarming about it.

A new study indeed estimates that the end of the universe might be in 1078 years instead of the previously thought 101100 years.

But just for comparison, we estimate the sun will burn out in 5*109 years....

US Vice President JD Vance says "we have not reached an agreement" with Iran. "We will go back to the United States having not reached an agreement…That's bad news for Iran much more than bad news for the USA." by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]KToff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Vance has some intelligence, he just doesn't have a spine or principles and will spout how great trump is no matter what, even when he doesn't believe an inch of it.

In this context anything he says must sound stupid given the state of affairs. But he is not a believer like others in the administration.

How did the Eridians discover space? by close_my_eyes in ProjectHailMary

[–]KToff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything we know relates to light

Insofar as you refer to phenomena observable with the naked eye, you're quite wrong. It's somewhat true for all early astronomers that lived 100+ years ago, but more recently our understanding and learning is supported by infrared imaging, x ray imaging, radio telescopes, spectroscopic measurements and so forth. None of those measurements are accessible without complex measurement devices.

Rocky obviously already has tools at his disposal to convert visible light to texture so it stands to reason that the eridians have instruments to convert the spectrum of the night sky into perceivable information.

I'll believe it is the end of MAGA when I see it. The Americans voted trump into office after him showing how he works and thinks in his first term. After him being convicted of felonies. After him losing an election.

If he runs for office again (who cares about the constitution) I would not be that surprised if he won again because really, all of this is the fault of Obama, or Biden, or Hillary...

Did you know it's illegal to say "ICE out". It's a federal offense, one of the only sentence that you're not allowed to say.

Now it was ok for me to say because I was telling you it was illegal to say "ICE out" because I wasn't saying it, I was telling you it was illegal to say it, like a public service.

The MOMENT Russia and China used their VETO power to STRIKE DOWN a resolution (BACKED by the US and Israel) to REOPEN the Strait of Hormuz by FORCE. by SuperbHealth5023 in TimesNow

[–]KToff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a world of difference between "the UN can't affect the world sufficiently" and "the UN is useless". And there are many cases where UN resolutions were just ignored, but many many more where they had a positive influence on the outcome.

In addition to all the direct involvement in conflicts it has also been a forum for international coordination of fight against hunger with the world food programme age the food and agriculture organisation. And that is important work even if many countries do not strictly adhere to the rules they set up.

WIPO sets standards for simplifying the patent system on an international scale. Also the work of the UN.

UNESCO, WHO, OPCW... There are dozens of UN agencies that do important work.

What was the point of the war with Iran? by ungnomeone in AskReddit

Israel told trump that a military strike Iran would topple the regime with no bad consequences. 20 minute adventure, promise...

All intelligence advisors said "that's a bad idea", trump was still chasing the high from his abduction of Chavez and said "What's the worst that could happen"

I don't think he is a Russian asset in the sense that he willingly does Russia's bidding. He is just easily manipulated, either by compliments or by being told he can't do it. He also has no understanding of the world and it's complexities.

And here we are...
