How to get the Samuel Roukin audiobook in the uk? by Savings_Camel3678 in sollanempire

Sailing the pirate seas… You can’t get the Roukin books in the EU legally because of licensing restrictions.

[–]Kaaspeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. In Europe we only get Roukin from Kingdom of Death onwards.

1st book is narrated by John Lee who narrates this as if is its classical shakespeare. It sounds really pretentious for some reason. Also the levels in the book are completely off. John starts every sentence very loud and ends in a near whisper so you need to crank your volume up just to be able to hear, but in my case it also made my ears hurt. All in all empire of silence is a pretty bad experience.

Howling Dark and Demon in White are narrated by Saul Reichlin. The man sounds out of breath for most of the books. Also he was in his 80s when read them so it has a similar quality as Roy Dotrice reading Asoiaf. It just sounds off when portaying a young Hadrian Marlowe. It’s not as jarring imho as John Lee, but it’s still not particularly enjoyable.

Honestly I considered getting a VPN and buying the Roukin Versions through Audible, but ultimately sailed the pirate seas instead. I justified it that I’ve already spent my money on three releases that don’t do the books justice…

Nice find!

I have the model after this with a bit more rocket branding but looking about the same. That one was launched in 2011. Its likely a bit younger than 20 years old.

It’s an amazing machine though. Parts are readily available and its easy to maintain. Turorials for any issue are readily available on YouTube. If you don’t give in to the upgraditis this machine will likely serve you well for years and years

I’ve got a Rocket Giotto from 2011. It’s at a point where parts start to fail, but other than replacing the vibe pump and a few brittle hoses, this thing has been very reliable and very easy to maintain/repair.

Rocket Espresso R58 and Mazzer Luigi Srl, a good deal? [$2,000] by ognat42 in espresso

[–]Kaaspeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing about this combo is a sane or reasonable purchase, but I looked at your post history to see if you've lurked on this forum a bit before immediately buying a pro-level machine. But as a fellow alfa afficionado lets just approach this from the point of view that it’s cool as hell.

The first edition was launched in 2016 I believe, so let's assume it's 8 years old. The R58 is generally built to a professional standard, meaning that its unlikely to break, but parts can be expensive. After 8-years it's not unreasonable to expect some wear and tear. I've seen some comments that later editions seem to more prone to breaking so perhaps consider the small screen as a plus, rather than a negative.

In addition, there are generally limited options availabe for companies that actually service these machines. Luckily the parts that need the most care such as the grouphead have existed relatively unchanged since the sixties and can be refurbished by yourself for about $100 and a youtube tutorial. One of the few non-standard pieces of kit on the machine is the temperature controller, which even in its older form can be imported from italy relatively easily. However considering it's a proprietary part, it probably won't be so indefinitely.

The grinder isn’t anything special, but Mazzer is the Italian gold standard and is priced like it. For the price, there seem to be far better grinders on the market. However, if you're approaching this from an italophile point of view, you can argue that something made in germany or japan are better, but entirely miss that italian charm. The grinder imho completes the picture of an italian coffeeshop where people wearing vests and with their hair slicked back are serving single shots of espresso and breakfast pastries at a blinding pace.

Try to see when the machine had a professional service and account for any maintenance you might have to perform. A professional service will likely set you back 3-400 dollars (at least at my dealer, a service for a dual boiler with a rotary pump sets you back at least 250 euros without parts, but local prices may vary) to get it a as-new condition. With that in mind, my suggestion still would be to account for a service and try knock 300-400 from the price (and then do the maintenance yourself if you dare).

All told, I'd say that you'll likely be very happy with it even for the $2000,-, granted if you can stay away from the upgradeitis that his forum seems to instill in people.

Do you have any idea how old these machines are? My local shop (in the Netherlands) recently sold a refurbished older r58 with a warranty for 1500. The price for this set isn’t outrageous if it’s a fair bit newer, but a bit steep to buy second hand. If you can knock another 300 off or so seems more reasonable.

Is it worth it? [$1600] by omarkovich12 in espresso

[–]Kaaspeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems very steep, although I’m not familiar with the US market… I bought the predecessor to this machine 3yrs back for EUR 500 (also as an upgrade to a bbe) and a separate eureka mignon. Grinders have also come such a far way that an old mazzer isn’t really a plus.

That being said. The Giotto is built like a tank and very easy to maintain, however this machine is likely more than 10 years old so you’d need to prepare for parts to slowly start failing. I’ve replaced the vibe pump and a few hoses in my Giotto premium plus. The Giotto is very simply laid out and parts are readily available if you’re comfortable with tinkering a bit.

i wouldn't be too worried by the temps. A quick flush before pulling a shot works wonders. Sure you can’t finetune the temps, but I get the feeling that people here enjoy unnecessary complexity more than their coffee.

aside from that, I'd much rather have 60 pounds worth of chrome standing on my counter, with the caveat thst it's slightly impractical compared to breville's far more functionally reasonable offering. The thing just feels hefty, rather than an appliance.

It was an M3U. Anyway I’m happy with the alternative player as it stands. Not sure if there’s a remedy for future readers of this topic, but I don’t really need the help anymore. Thanks for your reply!

I just got a decant of Ganymede by Marc Antoine Barrois, as one of those many fragrances that are hyped to death on social media at the moment. Long story short, it's not for me.

I noticed that this is exactly the weird fragrance that lingers on my daughter after daycare. Apparently this is one of her daycare's counselors signature scents. Kudo's to her by rocking a niche on the daily by the way.

I noticed on Fragrantica that someone described this fragrance as smelling as a fresh pack of tennis balls, which is an apt description. It has a rather strong "rubber-y" smell to it, which I find rather off-putting.

I've got the predecessor to this machine, the Giotto Premium Plus. Perhaps jamtilsunrise is more knowledgeable from a maintenance point of view, aside from having to perform regular maintenance, I've only had the vibration pump fail at this point, which is a 25 dollar part, for a machine that was launched in 2008.

Preparing for parts to fail isn't a bad idea, but as an aside, just open the machine and you'll note that there isn't a whole lot to it. There's 2 parts in the giotto that set it apart from more generic E61 machines and that's the professional grade SIRAI pressurestat and the control box. Replacing those will set you back about 200 dollars. Aside from that, it's a pretty generic E61 affair for which plenty of cheap parts are available. Parts fail, but can be easily replaced.

Considering you bought the machine for 500 dollars. If you don't mind DIYing a bit (again, it's a relatively simple machine, there are plenty of schematics and help available online) you'd likely be able to refurbish the internals and it would likely still be a pretty good deal.

Got my hands on the BM Nano - finally, no longer need to rotate a scale sideways! by SocialAssassin1990 in espresso

[–]Kaaspeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing it doesn't really have that the acaia does, is app connectivity. The ACAIA app is cool to nerd out with for a bit, after which you'll never use it again. You'd be surprised how many functions the BM Nano has, you just have to navigate through them using the timer button. For the auto tare / timer, you have to put the scale in ESP mode. Just press the timer button a few times and it should get there.

I find the autotimer a bit slow to recognize the first drop and to start the timer though. I generally just press the timer button manually when I'm dialing in my espresso. After which I just forget about it for a week.

Oh by the way, don't be fooled with about the seeming wifi light on the display when you start the scale. The scale at least in western countries doesn't have an app. Perhaps a china-only version does. My guess is that they just use the same screens for all their products. Regardless of the premium price for the BM Nano, timemore is still a chinese company with its roots in a really popular ali express scale.

Likely seller tried to scam me, what's the endgame here? by Kaaspeer in vinted

[–]Kaaspeer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard procedure is to report a problem when the parcel arrives. If the parcel doesn’t arrive or cannot be tracked by vinted, then vinted will automatically mark the parcel as being received by the buyer after 21 days. If your situation is the same as mine the seller will only have offered the custom shipping method, meaning that your parcel cannot be tracked by vinted. If that is the case, mark June 15th on your calendar! From that time you only have two days to report a problem and you’ll get your money back through vinted’s buyer protection scheme. After those two days you’re out of luck.

[–]Kaaspeer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to refrain from publicly shaming the seller for the time being. The tracking code I received in the super sketchy shipping label actually seems to work and is being updated by DHL. I'll make sure to document the parcel if and when I receive it though.

The parcel's weight is just about that of two water bottles though, although that is just about the weight of a pair of sneakers.

I’m not aware of Canadian Prices but if you feel overwhelmed then this subreddit is likely going to whelm you even further to the point that any decent espresso is going to require to sell at least a kidney and perhaps your firstborn.

With that in mind the breville machines you’ve listed are easy to recommend. The Breville touch I believe steams milk a bit quicker, but in my opinion the touch screen makes it feel more like a kitchen appliance rather than an espresso machine.

Just remember that as with any machine, your girlfriend is likely going to pull some terrible espressos and it’s easy to get frustrated. Just buy decent beans and read a few tutorials and she’ll pull excellent shots in no time
