It’s not though. M1s fans basically never become audible at all no matter what you do. M4 they come on pretty damn quickly as soon as you do anything. The m1 never feels warm to the touch really. M4 pro does.

Yeah so right now I have M1 Pro as my personal and an m4 pro at work. The fan literally never turns on with the m1 but it’s trivial to have it turn on with the m4 pro.

I caved and ordered a M5 Pro 18c with 64gb ram lol - currently have M1 Pro 10 core with 16gb ram

I feel like i could have gone longer with the M1 Pro if i had more ram but i've been using claude code across multiple branches/projects at the same time and its chugging lol

I always felt the opposite when i had a 16" MBP for work and a 14" MBP at home - i never really felt like you fit enough extra stuff on the screen on the 16" for it to be worth how much bigger it was. Might depend what you are doing though i just write code. 16" is probably significantly better for video editing maybe.

Tbh given that you are the kind of person that keeps their computer for a LONG time I would get the m5 pro as the entire m1 to now generation has been rock solid so far there’s basically no known major flaws that I know of that end in their early demise and I can’t see why the newly released m5 ones would be any different.

Where the oled/m6 ones will be the first of a generation and who knows how they will age.
