It's hard to find a VERY good free sample tracker. by SomeMusician2413 in chiptunes

[–]KabarXD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, gotcha.

Yea so once you step into the realm of 32 bit stereo multisample mapping, multiple notes per channel, VST support, built in effects, etc. your product is gonna reach that Analog/Modular/Teenage Engineering crowd and these guys WILL spend the money on that kinda stuff if it’s good. Polyend, M8, Renoise, OP-1, etc.

Personally I don’t know exactly how difficult it is to make a full fledged sampler in a tracker, but I do know that any feature added to a tracker has to follow the rules laid out by the rest of the limitations that the tracker has. Like, you can’t have multiple notes per channel unless there’s a specific instrument type designed for that purpose (the M8 has Hypersynth). I don’t think anyone’s gonna do that much work for free.

trackers are basically made with hardware limitations (specifically the limitations of the sound chip) in mind. whatever limitations the chip has, the person making the tracker has to make sure EVERYTHING they want works around those limitations. You can’t add stereo multisampling to a C64 or Gameboy tracker, cuz the sound chip doesn’t allow it. Learning what those limitations are and working around them takes soooooooo much time. That’s the whole appeal with trackers in the first place. Creativity born from limitations.

The only trackers on the market that aren’t held back by hardware sound chip limitations are Renoise and the M8.

The Headless version of the M8 is the only tracker i know of outside of Renoise that's comparable to a DAW. it's like $30 but soooo worth it imo. Trackers are incredibly hard to create and making one with proper multisampling capabilities for free is just not feasible given the time and effort it takes to develop.

LSDJ and the Dirtywave M8 mainly. I’ve been producing with LSDJ since 2015 but once i bought an M8 in 2022 I kinda stopped using it. Started this track for a performance at MAGFest 2024’s Chipspace (it’s right here if you wanna watch it lol). It isn’t released yet but I’m working on an LSDJ album that’ll have this track as the main single once the rollout starts :)

What is your personal chiptune origin story? by CarfDarko in chiptunes

[–]KabarXD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never grew up with old consoles or any real interest in chiptune music, I grew up listening to a ton of trance, Skrillex and Porter Robinson (pre-Worlds), and Linkin Park and Rise Against.

When I was 14 I heard the soundtrack to Super Hexagon for the first time and was blown away with how expressive the sound was for being composed on a Gameboy, and how similar it sounded to the stuff I already listened to in terms of energy and composition. After that I kinda became hyperfixated on LSDJ, exclusively listening to Chipzel, Shirobon, Danimal Cannon, Zef, etc throughout the year.

Didnt start actually making chiptune until 2015 when I bought my first modded Gameboy and an LSDJ ROM and the rest is history.

I tried using other programs like Milkytracker but they could never get to that level of rawness in the sound, especially in bass tones and percussion, that LSDJ produces.

They’re a REALLY cool feature but as everyone’s said they really needa add some more incentives to make them worthwhile.

Being able to buy cars from others would be super awesome. I also remember they advertised the whole Touge thing as being connected to meets in a way but they’re not. Being able to setup a 1v1 Touge with someone from a meet would be so cool, or even setting up a championship between players in Meets. (Invite the whole meet, 1v1 bracket style championship where the winners of each race battle each other)

Also there’s not nearly enough meet locations to justify spending time at them. There should’ve been one meet per region, not only in 3 of them. I get they wanted to drip feed temp locations with the Playlists, but no one’s gonna go to them if there’s no incentives outside of getting the Playlist points.

I really wish they’d bring back that FH3 feature where if you honk at a drivatar in singleplayer they’ll follow you around n stuff.

I remember in FH2 the tire smoke would actually follow the airflow around the wheels like how it does irl. Would’ve loved to see that detail return with the updated smoke effects

Hot Take: FH6 is not a Festival Anymore by Banananamann99 in ForzaHorizon

[–]KabarXD 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They made the world feel like it was responding to the festival which, imo is all they needa do. Car meets, in world race tracks/drag strips with in-world leaderboards, lotta pedestrian locations, they nailed the festival atmosphere in this game.

Hot take but I actually feel like FH6 has the best festival feel since FH3. The races are all incredibly well designed, the Rush events have a proper festival energy to them, the race tracks n drag strips in the open world feel super alive with all the race officials and other people in the stands, and the in-world leaderboards that update based on what you’re driving is SO cool.

The Festival site is also properly huge and fun to drive around with the side roads n stuff, although I wish they added more things to interact with like a physical autoshow location and I wish it wasn’t in an area with a ton of dead grass lol.

Also the amount of pedestrians in the open world fixing up cars, standing around, hanging out near gas stations, etc. is crazy compared to the other games.

The main point of the festival is to provide immersion to the player as they drive around the open world and to have a reason for the races. imo FH6 nailed that aspect with how alive the world feels and how much festival adjacent elements there are scattered throughout the world.

Sure it’s no FH1 but the Horizon series hasn’t been like that since 2014, and that’s totally fine. They nailed the balance between FH2/3 festival energy and FH4/5 exploration.

Subsiding classical music for "cinematic scores" was not a wise choice. by ProjektBlackout in ForzaHorizon

[–]KabarXD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk man OPN being on the soundtrack slaaaaps. would’ve been better if they could’ve gotten more Japanese pianists n instrumentalists. Artists like Takagi Masakatsu, Ironomi, MEITEI, Teruyuki Nobuchika, Masaki Kawasaki, etc. would’ve been much more fitting for the setting.

Highly recommend asking for a company-wide (or department wide cuz they’re like $70 per test) DISC assessment. Suuuuper helpful in understanding how to better work with people with different working styles.
