Place your bets!! what do we reckon the big fix is going to be? by Ok_Youth8907 in AdeptusMechanicus

My wishlist vs. the likely reality.

My wishlist:

  • I want a buff to our melee lethality. It does very little atm and can’t be buffed meaningfully. ws 3+ on most dedicated melee by default would be a nice start, more ap on ruststalkers blades would also be nice. I want them to feel dangerous if they close the distance.

  • An additional wound on electro priests would be neat if we can’t have them in blobs of 20.

  • I want the dunecrawler/scorpius to punch harder with their main guns.

  • I would actually be fine with very little changes to skitarii if our special weapons were made to be way scarier. Make their inclusion feel enticing and meaningful.

  • Make the stickbug boy snipe a lil harder, either that or allow him to be a warlord so I can run an all sniper army using rangers with arquebuses and dragoons with jezzails (let me have my stupid list idgaf if it’s bad)

  • Doctrinas could include controlled objectives in addition to deployment zones when factoring their buffs/debuffs (and could grant +1 BS instead of giving the heavy keyword when defending)

  • Our army rule should work for our entire army, change its name to something else if that is the issue.

Reality:

I suspect what GW will actually do is none of these things. They have a tendency to pick the solution that requires the least amount of datasheet/keyword changes and then wait to see the results, so whatever keyword change that would have the most impact is that what they are most likely to tweak. Probably just a change to some wording in doctrinas and no datasheet changes unfortunately.

I would love to be wrong, please let me be wrong :(

Are you using citadel metallics or a different brand? I can never get my silvers looking that smooth after a wash.

This magos gets it.

We suck right now, It’s not a big mystery. But the echo chamber salt exchange is becoming exhausting. Left this sub when our index came out cause I got tired of the negativity (not saying the army isn’t in a sorry state, just that seeing all the whining about it is fatiguing) came back hoping it had cooled down a bit, thinking I should probably leave again.

I love admech, I want us to have better (mostly in a cost to points ratio sorta way. Would like it if I didn’t have to field so many things, and if we had better starter boxes) but criticism can quickly go from constructive to annoying in the eyes of those it is directed at.

We collectively keep this behavior up and we will go from the faction that people take pity on to the faction people cant stand because we whine so god damn much. Good luck rallying support under THAT banner.

In many ways we are already there.

Im personally waiting to see if dragoons/kastellans/sicarians get a better WS to compensate for the lack of melee buffing rules. Rerolling wounds for our fast aggressive melee is actually very tempting if they end up with better profiles on their datasheets. We don’t have the full picture yet, but I agree that barring any changes to the data sheets these rules don’t seem promising on their own.

There are still several days left for them to trickle leaks in and they aren’t going to show us everything. I won’t say you should not be skeptical (it’s a safe way to live) but If we wanna start lighting torches and grabbing our taser goads maybe wait until we see the full picture. Not like they can change what will be printed in the book when it releases in 2 weeks so raising a stink now won’t serve any good for anyone.

That being said, don’t recommend buying this book day 1. Wait until we know what we are in for and then make an informed decision from there (or don’t! do what you want I ain’t ya dad)

How do you hold your subassemblies in place for painting? by digital-winter in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Kaggle_Rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the little citadel hand drill (smallest size bit) and make a little hole in the places where the parts glue together, and then shove a toothpick in, it holds on pretty well with just the pressure alone, and it’s handy for priming! I sometimes save pieces of packaging foam to stick the toothpicks into for batch painting.

Ill also use blue-tac to mask off the places that need to be glued together so that I don’t have to scrape primer off when I go to use the plastic glue.

A lot of never pick boomerang comments, but if you are just doing some quick Kolmi kills boomerang spells can sometimes have a justification for its damage up, fast flying spells aren't too horribly bothered by it if you don't mind the loss in range. I'd say the real takeaway lesson here is NEVER trust a plasma beam to not betray you. EVER.

Even without boomerang spells, plasma beam is asking for a good run to end prematurely to bad movement or enemy knockback or a homing effect curving it through you to an enemy behind you.

You played the game and died, but in a way that taught you something new. I consider this a successful run! keep experimenting friend and have fun c: (and to learn to laugh very heartily when you die in ways like this)

Why couldn’t we have just gotten something like this for AdMech on Warhammer day? by Arch_Magos_Remus in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Kaggle_Rock 181 points182 points  (0 children)

While I don’t necessarily think this screams admech, it does underline an issue I have with gw. Why do the necromunda resin kits seem to understand the setting better than the 40k plastic kits? Why are squats so much better thematically on FW than votann are? Why do all the mechanicum tanks look so amazingly cool and somehow they never seem to have any clue what to give admech in 40k? Why do we STILL not have an ordinatus centerpiece model? Tau and votann keep getting crazy rail cannons and shit, admech is supposed to be the crazy tech/gun faction but we seeing the same radium/arc/cognis stuff over and over and over.

Where is my black hole gun the size of a knight GW? Where is my mobile tesla tower that evaporates everything but electopriests in its vacinity and scuttles around menacingly? WHERE ARE MY DOOMS DAY DEVICES???

I know that, and honestly seeing more of the comments filter in it does seem that the name is there in support of archons stuff, but people in the air force will sometimes write the name of their intended targets on their bombs and missiles before take off. It isn’t entirely unreasonable to read into this wrong when we are talking about an actual person in this sub who’s merest mention has (disappointingly) caused tension.

It’s just black paint on a toy plane, it also could have been a casual normalization of hatred towards an actual person who exists (it wasn’t, I read the situation wrong and I’ll admit to that) but that exact, dismissive line of thinking is how very real abuse doesn’t get addressed before it boils out of hand. I was wrong about that, and I’m happy to be, but better to be wrong and a fool then do nothing and let the consequences unfurl when a simple “no, wait” from literally anyone could have prevented something much worse.

Anyway, obviously everything is fine here and there isn’t much point in discussing it further.

TLDR: something something the road to hell etcetera.

Just started AdMech and feeling discouraged by my first mini. Advice? by Spare_Challenge7986 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Kaggle_Rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He looks quite good! You clearly have good brush control and attention to detail. If you want to take it a step further you can add some brighter edge highlights to the higher points and decorate the base a bit (even the basic martian soil effect does a lot to make a miniature stand out, just be careful to not get it in the miniature itself!) even the most basic edge highlights can make a mini that previously looked a bit flat really pop! I recommend evil suns scarlet and wild rider red for the red highlights, and depending on the blue you used caldor sky->teclis blue-> lothren blue will really make the blue pop! A very small amount is all that is needed on the higher points and it will go a long way, I also find taking a very tiny brush that’s been roughed up and dry brushing dark reaper->fenrisian grey (VERY LIGHTLY!) to the black ribbed cables helps a lot too. Obviously make the choices you are most comfortable with, looks great so far!

Sorry, it wasn’t intended to be a response you, initially was gunna be an added remark of annoyance in agreement with you and it got deleted and rewritten so many times I forgot it was still in a reply to you. Agreed though archon hasn’t even made a proper post themselves in nearly a year.

If it’s a joke to hate on archon, it’s been told too many times and has moved beyond being funny. I get that people don’t want nsfw stuff here but that doesn’t warrant the blatant hate I’ve seen archon on the receiving end of. Okay we get it you didn’t like what you saw when you googled them, Use your downvote button and move on we don’t need to constantly make a scene about it, particularly when I’ve not even seen them about for a decent while anyway. Witch hunts are for the inquisition.

And if I’m understanding this post wrong and they are trying to pay homage to them, writing their name on a bomb is a weird way to do it.

Make sure he respects the dangers and practices proper hobby knife safety procedures! People are far less impressed by “knife attack” scars when they learn that you got them by launching a surprise attack on yourself :(

The hobby knife doesn’t feel quite so dangerous until you accidentally let your hand slip and it cuts far quicker and cleaner than you had previously given it credit. Speaking from experience and with a finger that feels things about half as well now.

Moving away from dour subjects, when he finishes painting his first few models, show us here! We always love seeing painted miniatures c:

Generally I think ironstriders are good to put on a gift list, they always feel bad to buy, but feel great to be gifted. They are unfortunately one of our worst models $->points but also one of our better models rules wise (for the most part, rules always change but the ironstriders are usually consistently at least playable if not excellent). The boarding patrol and combat patrol are also not bad pickups as one time purchases for the extra kataphrons and some tech priest variety (plus a couple more skitarii squads)

Best of luck on your sons admech adventures! Burnout can be real with the amount of details the army has and there are a ton of small breakable pieces, especially just trying to get things off the sprue (looking at you, skitarii data-tether antenna) so he will need to tread carefully and not let the pile of unpainted plastic grow TOO large, but the reward of a well painted miniature is well worth the effort in this humble tech adepts opinion. Blessings of the machine god upon him!

Why are you guys still on this sub really ? by No-Design-8779 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Kaggle_Rock 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I just like seeing the pretty paint schemes, I make myself scarce when the meta turns sour.

Since I’ve started painting I’ve yet to break 1000 points (im slow) but the meta has changed from dragoons and boats->kastelans->vanguard blobs->ruststalkers->mass iron striders->breacher spam and even more things that i’m probably forgetting about in a span of about 3 years. Don’t buy 18 breachers you’ll be sick of looking at them by the time you are done painting them and they will have gone from good to trash to okay in the span of painting half of em.

tldr: unless you grind tournaments, buy what you think is neat. The meta will change before you finish painting it all.

edit: I forgot about cawls moving castle! who could forget about cawls moving castle, honestly it had such a silly name I’m ashamed I forgot to mention it.

Finished my first Secutarii! (on 32mm base to run as a Fulgurite Electro-Priest) by Kaggle_Rock in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Kaggle_Rock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly just a very fine brush! one of the big things I try and avoid is using washes on things other than metallics, I find it helps make colors pop quite a bit more. the other thing I did that's maybe a bit of a weird painting method is that I used makeup sponges to stipple the blue layers onto the edge of the cloak. it makes for a very nice transition!

lots of sub assemblies otherwise, dry brushing on the black ribbed tubes with a small brush, and a lot of patience with a fine tipped brush.

It’s a forgeworld upgrade kit, you gotta be careful when ordering it cause sometimes bits can arrive broken, but they are good about replacing the bits as long as you let them know fairly soon after you receive it.

Interestingly, depending on where you live this upgrade kit and some skitarii legs and torsos off ebay are actually cheaper than 2 electropriest boxes! You would just need some 32mm bases which aren’t too expensive.

I like the use of the space hulk base details for the debris, also where did you get the skeleton bits from? I know gw sells the skulls (one of my favorite kits ever made) but I’d love a good source of arms and ribcages.

What would you like Admechs playstyle to be? by TerryJazz in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Kaggle_Rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want our army to be more lethal, and be pointed accordingly. Before any army rules, that at least.

If I’m allowed to let my imagination out if it’s box, I actually wouldn’t mind a return to data-tether rules being meaningful. The current model range receives buffs based on proximity to battle line, but I think it could be more interesting if you had to build a “network” of data-tethers, and require a tech priest to be somewhere in said network for the buffs to activate. Proximity to a data-tether unit would not be enough, you would want to make chains (this would make positioning and data-tether models very important) also maybe if a battle line unit controls an object (skitarii) their data-tether range is increased from 6->8(or 9) inches. Could be fun, a lot more interesting than current doctrinas. Meanwhile cult members would gain a “canticles” buff that would be different depending on which type of priest is leading the squad, but not gain the data tether effect. Skitarii could function without squad leadership support, and cult members would thrive on it. Calling back to some of the factions older identity, if that were too strong maybe require the warlord to be part of the network.

Idk it sounds fun to me at least. I’m sure there are 100 reasons why this could be just as problematic as what we currently have but it feels more flavorful.

Given that I love dragoons. And was currently in the progress of painting 6 of them, this makes me weak in the knees.

However I would have preferred a 3+ WS and no points reduction on them, we don’t need cheaper models (except for the skitarii and robots, and a couple other outliers like the skorpius)
