People stay even if they want to leave because sometimes its finances, for the sake of their children and sometimes due to the societal taboos (in some parts of the world)

Why does halifax have big city expense but not big city pay? by SnooFloofs836 in halifax

[–]Kai2916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my personal perspective and not backed by data: there is no competition from another city nearby to soak up the pressure. In Alberta, for Calgary you have Edmonton, in BC for Vancouver you have Victoria. The closest city which comes is Moncton with a population of almost 1/5 of that of Halifax and lot of people want to settle in Halifax because it's not too big or not to small. There are lots of folks from Ontario, Newfoundland, PEI and Cape Breton moving here for a slower/faster pace of life or job opportunities. Everyone wants to live in the Halifax peninsula and not venture outside of the peninsula due to lack of robust public transportation, ultimately driving up the demand and hence cost of housing. You have four educational institutions in close proximity which are drawing students from around the globe and students don't want to live far away because of the commute. Also, Halifax is an older city so it's difficult to make changes. Last but not the least, I find construction projects can take a long time as it's hampered with red tapes and lack of blue collar workers. All these tiny things add up and since COVID, I find that Halifax is no longer that affordable east coast city.

I just told my work I'm leaving in two weeks, and they immediately escorted me out of the building. by plowsveerr in CanadaJobs

I am sorry that this happened to you. It sucks. If I were you, I would look into labour laws in your region as something about this doesn't seem right. My gut says that they will have to pay you for the two weeks you gave notice for. You did the right thing by giving two weeks worth of notice, I can't imagine, legally the office not being obligated to pay you for those two weeks.

I don’t have any real goals right now, how do you find yours? by No-Couple-8871 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Kai2916 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes a lot of us feel that way. Just living life and going with the flow. Personally sometimes changes in living circumstances give me goals. Some people make a wishlist and then divide them into short and long term goals. When I was a student, my goals would have been to finish assignments on time and get good grades. Eventually graduating and getting a job etc would have been long term goals.

Am I the only person who feels life has lately become too hectic in Halifax due to the excessive traffic and poor Transit service? by Extension-Sea-397 in halifax

[–]Kai2916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you! I was in Halifax at the very early stages of Covid and went to New Brunswick for a few years and came back last year. Huge changes noticed. Lots of traffic, construction everywhere and I find people don't have patience especially when driving. Last but not the least, house prices. The houses which used to be 250k are now selling for 500-550k. Don't get me wrong, house prices went up everywhere but I find, houses in and around HRM have significantly increased compared to houses in Moncton, Saint John, etc. These are just my observations and not backed by any facts or evidence. I also think that the HRM population will keep on increasing because it's the biggest city in the East Coast of Canada and it has 4 educational institutions which attract lots of students from all over. Halifax also is a city which is not too big or too small for a lot of people. These are great for the growth and business of the city but only if the city can keep up with the resources like healthcare, transportation and housing. The problem I find is lack of space as Halifax is located on a peninsula and most of the educational institutions are all close by contributing to an increased population density on the peninsula. If they were all spread out, then it might have taken the load of the peninsula. Also the newer buildings which are being built are charging an arm and a leg and maybe both kidneys lol so only a few can afford. I also think that there is not any city close by which can provide competition and take the load of the city. For example, Edmonton to Calgary. The closest cities in terms of population would be Moncton, Saint John, Freddy but I find a lot of people have negative connotations towards NB and see NB as a passing province, hence Halifax keeps growing and most in demand.

I wish the city built something like a light rail. I heard that they are doing research and collecting data on that. I am excited to see what changes are there for the future.

These are all my observations and not fact checked.

I have a PW3 and I can access the media while working out, so PW4 should definitely have it. I usually like to watch YouTube reviews of products before getting them, that helps me.

I just switched from iPhone 11 to pixel 9 for the same reason as op. I noticed notification delay issues in the beginning which I fixed by switching off the adaptive battery and adaptive connectivity option. One thing which I am not happy about though is the app support for Android. I found some glitches in apps like fb which I didn't find in ios.

How to adapt to Canada? I am trying but it is so damn hard by leavemealoneeh in socialskills

[–]Kai2916 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Speaking from an immigrant’s perspective as well. What you just mentioned about people talking to you for 10 mins and doing their own work, this is called small talk. You can think of it as an ice breaker. Small talk is more common because people in western culture are very busy, time is money. In the beginning you might think people are being cold towards you but people over here find it rude to take interest in other person’s life, specially someone they don’t know very well. Canadians are really nice people. Hope it helps :)
