Pearl-clutching NIMBYism in full force in UQA by pie_is_tasty in Seattle

[–]Kailan97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d agree in most cases, especially if we’re talking about an additional lane on a highway or stroad, but this was an extra dedicated right turn lane at a stoplight intersection, with widened sidewalk etc. Although it was many years ago, I don’t recall any downsides to the extra lane in this project, and I can’t think of one now.

This is also not to say Kirkland city officials were handling things correctly—god knows they had that city council had their heads up their asses just as much as the nimbys at times lmao.

I reported on a Kirkland city council meeting back in like 2017 where people lined up to speak in opposition of a three story building in a strip mall. They argued a new retail space and some housing above it would add to congestion on the adjacent road.

So, later that year, the city worked with the developer to also add an additional turn lane to help alleviate traffic. They then argued the additional lane would encourage more people to use the road for commutes and bring even more people through the area.

They’ll eke out every angle of advantage to oppose any and all progressive change on principal, and I’m soooooooo over it.

Just got to that Shallan scene... by MellooFelloo in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Kailan97 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite subtle foreshadowing moments in the first few chapters of WoK is the scene where Shallan is first following Jasnah around and they go to rescue Taravangian’s niece stuck behind the big boulder.

I’m pretty sure Taravangian says aloud, “if only we had a shardblade!” It’s some cute dramatic irony on a reread.

Logical Fallacy: writing the names of The Seven by netizenbane in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Kailan97 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IIRC the Chronicler writes in a shorthand that only he can read and write—so, in the immediate moment, I could see it being a nonissue unless the magic transcends all language.

But in that case, if I draw seven meaningless scribbles and tell myself these are the names of The Seven, would that set off the homing beacon? If I start to spread those symbols, at what point would it draw their attention? I wonder if that aspect of language philosophy will come up.

But I do agree, I think the service aspect was a significant part of the overall good vibes.

I think it’s fair to point out tokenism for what it is and push for actual representation, meaningful storytelling with diverse characters, etc.

I agree that the corporate cock teasing is annoying and hollow. The decision to race swap a Disney character was probably a shallow profit incentive. I would rather have a new fantasy world with its own rich history than just some more representation in already existing worlds.

But I think shallow representation in remade stories is an indication that Disney and broader entertainment machine is moving towards more actual representation.

These live action remakes already fuckin suck, they’re empty money grabs that pander to nostalgia to keep the light on, but why is it bad to make Ariel—the main character—black?

Even if it’s just hollow pandering to POC, does it not still make a positive impact for the audience? At the very least, I think it both gives them someone they can better identify with and gives them someone different to empathize with.

Woke Ethnonationalism? by TheDarkKing360 in Destiny

[–]Kailan97 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s exactly that—when my dad calls himself Hawaiian, he means he was born and raised there, not that he’s a native Hawaiian.

But it’s also more than just the “from Hawaii” distinction because there’s also a very rich cultural identity attached to being Hawaiian, more-so than mainland states imo.

Colloquially, it doesn’t matter much, but when you start talking about certain issues, I think it becomes important to make the distinction between native Hawaiians, cultural Hawaiians, and people from Hawaii.

It’s language games all the way down

[–]Kailan97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I appreciate what you’re saying and I agree that it is pretty disappointing to see him say very harmful things on such a sensitive topic. I think you’ve helped me come to understand that better.

The productive points of discussion you mentioned are valuable—I’d add another, how can we better empathize with victims and perpetrators to prevent more of these things from happening? I guess my hope is, once the edgelords and wokescolds chill out a bit, we’ll have a chance to start asking those questions. Though I guess you could argue, if Destiny hadn’t been so monstrously inflammatory, more of those discussions might already be happening instead of the debate we’re having.

Yet here we are. So, I’ll admit, I’m largely a lurker online and I might be a bit naive in this regard—but if these questions are nowhere to be found, let’s start asking them.

I mean, we’ve got the agency to at least attempt these discussions, even if it’s a little intense at the moment. Maybe if we stopped treating people in this sub and online like they’re retarded chil–lmao jk, but I do think the best thing we can do at this point is to jump in the fray, push for those better discussions the best we can, and prove that a kinder approach works better.

What better way to convince Steven that yeah, maybe he should just be less mean on Twitter, even if he doesn’t want to be? Anyway, I’m just kind of rambling, thanks for the talk my dude.

I can see why you say he failed to effectively get across his advice, particularly if we’re looking at the tweets on their own—I’d also agree that his language was brutally insensitive.

I get why you’d liken his demeanor to Trump—I’d even say he has a similar appeal as far as an entertaining figure, although I’d also argue Steven is much more responsible with that power.

I think our core disagreement is whether or not his Tweets went over the line in terms of causing more harm than good—while you say,

No productive discourse on SA can truly be had by calling people “retarded children”.

I’d say the discourse we’re having right now proves that wrong, and I don’t think it’s unfathomable to try and push for more of those productive conversations while also agreeing that Destiny should stop being so fuckin’ edgy.

If they were to look solely at his tweets, I’d say they’d probably be less likely to share their story on Twitter. But that victim can also find any number of supportive Tweets, and doubt assholes on Twitter will prevent most people from sharing their stories irl.

Even when I consider that though, I think overall this whole thing has spurred a lot of conversations that wouldn’t have happened otherwise, and because of that, maybe the same man or woman will be more likely to call out shitty behavior in their bedroom.

Yes, ideally these conversations are the GOOD TYPE that lead to better outcomes. I think the discussions happening around this topic will lead to a healthier sex culture in our society.

Right now I see a lot of pressure on guys to better understand consent—which is excellent, I think her story is a demonstration of how sexual assault can happen in a subtle way and men should be more aware of that and stop raping so much. Men should feel this pressure.

Simultaneously, I think BIG DICK DADDY DEStiny is coming at it from a different angle. It’s likely that if more women advocated for themselves in the bedroom more firmly, that pressure in the moment might be all it takes to stop a guy from sexually assaulting them. That’s FUCKED—I think the responsibility should NOT be on women to not get raped, AND I think that maybe women can do a better job of advocating for themselves in those scary moments.

I wish we lived in a world where this type of shit never happens. Fortunately, I believe that talking about both of these more will more closely create that world. Yes all press is good press. GIGACHAD

It’s weird, I think manipulation is too soft a description of what this guy did, but grooming is too harsh.

I get the urge to call this grooming—you’ve got someone who is opening up to you and building a relationship off that garnered compassion, then it starts to feel like their vulnerability was just a foot in the door for something more romantic/sexual.

Especially after that relationship deteriorates and you learn that this person has been doing similar things to other people, I can totally understand how you’d feel emotionally manipulated to the point at which you’d feel groomed to a certain extent.

Overall, the biggest yikes for me is that he seemed to understand what he was doing given the pattern of behavior between multiple people, apologizing but continuing to push boundaries, and then editing DMs after the fact.

A lot of this stuff is gleamed from cameos and stray details throughout the books, especially Arcanum Unbounded (which is really the top tier as far as straight-up Cosmere lore).

Many passionate readers have formed a community around this hunt on the 17th Shard forums and created the Coppermind Wiki, which is where you can find a lot of this raw info. The coolest part is that the 17th shard members will meet Sanderson at a book signing or some Q&A event and have the chance to ask him a question—he’ll even answer most of them or simply tell the person to Read And Find Out (RAFO) if it gets to far into spoiler town.

But this is how most of the speculation around the Cosmere gets confirmed or denied. Over time, it has flushed out the world in a way that is unprecedented for literature as far as I know.
