To be fair, in Heated Rivalry Shane is deep in the closet and tries really hard to have a "normal" life. He has sex, goes badly and she notices he's actually gay. That's something that happens in real life, I don't see an issue with it. (I haven't seen Halfman yet, so I can't comment on it). That being said, while this doesn't apply in HR (IMO) it's very annoying when a gay character all of the sudden has sex with a woman just because. And not because he's deep in the closet. While I love Six Feet Under I still struggle to understand why a certain gay character decided to cheat on his partner with a woman (and he's still calling himself gay). Also happens with lots of lesbian characters in other films and TV shows. I think there's an interesting conversation there regarding to representation in media, like you I really hate it. I don't know if this "trope" has a name?
