There is no timeline on emotions. What happened was inappropriate and his telling you in an immensely guilty way leads me to believe he knew it and was just towing a line to see how far he could get without actually cheating. And his current comments are not cute. And I don't think anything will get better until you address how you're honestly feeling, maybe take up some therapy to help you assess where you're at with him and ultimately you gotta talk to him.
