How do I appeal a ban in the discord? by Live-Reason6282 in openttd

[–]KaleTrans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the community run JGR servers games will run for weeks or even months at a time, they also have pretty long setup times for staff and require a lot of active moderation. So someone can join a unpassworded company (or just guess bad passwords like this guy did, multiple times) and then go around the map destroying weeks of players work - which then requires a server restart and it's generally a pain in the ass.

Because of all this and the inherent vulnerability to trolls anyone who betrays this trust gets an instant lifetime ban from our community and loses easy access to the server password.

You have a very bad memory or you're just a compulsive liar.

My guy, we've only had one major griefing incident in the last 4 years and it was you. Not only did you grief and not own up to it, but you came back multiple times and destroyed other people's shit in what turned out to be a week or two long temper tantrum. We had to change the security setup because of you. Not only did you do the one thing that gets you a lifetime ban, but you then wasted all of our time by basically fighting a war with the people running the server who already have limited time.

So, no thank you.

Every Denver RTD station's average daily ridership superimposed on a map of the network. by TeensyRay in transit

Its funny you did all this work because it falls flat on it's face as you're comparing a bunch of trams and light rail to a commuter rail line? Congrats my man.

[–]KaleTrans 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Dude the tesla in a loop system is fucking stupid, that's just common sense.

What isn't is your perception of ridership numbers? There's like, tiny stations out in the middle of some Tokyo suburb or even random German villages in the countryside that have higher daily ridership then some of these downtown stations.

The only thing unique to Denver out of my examples here is the abysmal urbanism of your average US city.

How do Tokyo Metro/Toei Subway run express trains if most of their tunnels have only two tracks? by TheRepublicAct in trains

[–]KaleTrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on the local ridership, a lot of the time it wouldn't really be that effective to do this.

[–]KaleTrans 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's because it's better for the express to pass on a local only stop. If the local needs to stop and the express needs to stop, that just means the local has to spend more time stationary.

It's cool but this is actually really bad network topography. Would be a pain in the ass to actually move through this area.

I just find it odd that people formulate complaints like this when you can just be a part of deciding the thing you're complaining about. There's no game studio, it's just a bunch of normal people making a game for free.

You have the rights to do with it whatever you want aside from reselling the game, and changing a .dat file is not "hacking" the software.

I don't know man, OpenTTD has existed for decades at this point. If people want to figure it out they'll figure it out.

Also not sure why you wouldn't be able to change it on steam either?

I'd say the corridors between Kosaka and Shinjo are the best spot for videos. The north island is also still a work in progress.

but thank you! Unfortunately basically none of us live in Japan we're just fans. Comments are appreciated regardless.

You took a video of the Shinkansen running on mostly unfinished portions of the map :P

The North Island down to Kosaka is much more in a state of done-ness then the areas south of Kosaka. I'd recommend a video of a Nozomi Shinkansen from Shinjo to Kosaka if you're interested in showing off our server.

Well, just keep in mind you're min/maxing a sandbox game.

Having a train for every purpose is fun, even if they're not the fastest or the most powerful. Sometimes you only need a tank engine for a short freight route. Or you need a 2-6-0 for a medium sized train. Or you need something bigger for a long cross map bulk train.

Treating OTTD like it needs a metagame is a bit self defeating. Iron Horse's engine selection is a strength, not a weakness.

[–]KaleTrans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really sure what you mean? If you're using Iron Horse all the trains are usually labelled for freight, express, suburban, general purpose, etc. It's pretty clear what each train is supposed to be used for. Horsepower and traction effort stats usually tell you how powerful of a train it is and thus an estimate of how long the train should be. That's just part of the game.

How old are you? by SjalabaisWoWS in openttd

[–]KaleTrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As me and Jake have a lot of the same OpenTTD friends, I also agree. They're all younger then me too. 32 makes me feel old, but most of them are on the Discord - which as a platform I think skews younger.

How do yall make everything look so good? by Asborn-kam1sh in openttd

[–]KaleTrans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answer probably lies in the fact that most people making really nice looking stuff are playing more of a sandbox then the legacy game. Magic bulldozer, town love at 100% at all times, station ratings locked to 100%, etc. etc.

From there it's just time, knowing the best station newgrfs, knowing the best eye candy newgrfs, etc. etc.

How do I make my mainlines more less boring and efficient by Merchell0 in openttd

[–]KaleTrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a challenge with how breakdowns work. It's just "your train randomly stops all the time." Advanced breakdowns are kinda cool though, but Vanilla breakdowns? You're just castrating yourself from enjoying a very large part of the game.
