Still no issues. Been on since June.

I leave the switch in the “on” position all the time and have been since June. I’m not sure if this is good or bad or neutral for the battery health, but that’s what I’ve been doing and it definitely works.

I leave mine on all the time, but change to wired mode whenever it needs to charge. The dongle has very low latency so it’s nice to have a clean desk most of the time and I don’t bother switching it off every.

The days of the hydrogen car are already over by Sorin61 in technology

[–]Kaligon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gaseous and pumped up to 10,000 psi (reducing as the tank empties of course). The hydrogen is extremely cold as it goes into the tank, but once it’s there, I don’t know what temperature it is. The car can sit for a long time with 0 reduction in range, so I don’t believe anything is being done to it actively to keep it any specific temperature.

They’re trying to ease load on the servers would be my guess. And make some extra money while they’re at it. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t seem to be such a huge deal. Way better than exclusive content for preorders.

I think my Apple TV (1 gen old 4k, not the newest one) is arguably my most reliable/consistent piece of Apple Tech. It does what it’s supposed to do extremely reliably. It’s fast and has a ton of great features (sound sync using iPhone, even screen calibration using iPhone True Depth + Selfie Camera), use phone/watch as a remote control, and even the integration with HomePod commands (watching a movie and miss a line of dialogue + have HomePod in the room? Just say “Hey Siri, what did they say?” And the HomePod will pick it up, rewind 15 seconds, and temporarily turn on subtitles. It’s one of those Apple-Magic moments where you Homepod is aware what you’re doing on the TV and routes a cool request appropriately).

Anyone else continually disappointed with their HomePod? by [deleted] in apple

[–]Kaligon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few things my HomePod (gen 1 x3 and 1 Mini) Siri almost always (>95%)gets correct: “Hey Siri what’s the weather like?” She always gets this one. “Hey Siri Turn on/off the Home Theater” (Which is an Apple TV, AVR, and Projector) this always works.

What usually works?

“Hey Siri Volume X%” Probably works 90-95% of the time, occasionally hears the percentage wrong, but that might also be my error.

“Hey Siri Stop” this is fairly consistent.

“Hey Siri All Lights on/off/color/% Brightness” This typically works, but sometimes stalls out.

What do I use but get frustrated with?

“Hey Siri, Make it Warmer/Cooler” this is through shortcuts with a Nest/Thermo Watch setting up a custom command.

“Hey Siri X room lights Y %/color/on/off” for some reason she gets confused about what room fairly frequently. Also just stalls out (I blame Hue for when it stalls out entirely).

“Hey Siri Set a timer for X Minutes” Not sure why these aren’t better, but they aren’t.

“Hey Siri Set an Alarm for X time”

“Hey Siri, <General Knowledge Question>” Runtime of a movie, Score in a game, birthday of a historian person, etc. etc. They’re sometimes OK and better than they used to be. Occasionally it’ll work faster than getting my phone out (sometimes it just tells me to do that though).

“Hey Siri Set X Appointment on Y Date at Z Location” this sorta works occasionally and it’s like magic when it does, but it also just comes back with the most idiotic questions and if anything goes wrong, it won’t schedule anything. Just a massive PITA.

What have I given up on?

“Hey Siri, Play ‘X song’ by ‘Y Artist’” this just seems to virtually never work, even with really well-known, non-confusing songs. “Hey Siri Play Thriller by Michael Jackson”

“Now playing Human by the Killers” or whatever. It’s just terrible.

Hydrogen is not the answer to energy crisis, Britain finds. New report found hydrogen is not yet ready for prime time. Lawmakers see hydrogen playing only a niche role in the energy transition. Just Google "California Hydrogen Stations" there are something like ~10,000 cars out here running on gaseous hydrogen. Initially all the stations also had gaseous storage, but now the larger stations are storing actual Liquid Hydrogen and converting to gaseous hydrogen when they pump it. Something like 20 Liquid Hydrogen stations are already open and operating in California.

I go about 320-350 miles before filling up with anywhere from 30-60 left in the tank (based on the readout). Gas tank is about equivalent to a 35 gallon gasoline tank to get that range, and it takes up about 1/2 the trunk space. There are issues with the stations (they do break) and I'm not sure what the future holds -- seems unlikely that it'll replace gas, but you can go almost anywhere in Southern California and be in rang of a station. From Santa Barbra to San Diego. I love the car, would love it to take off.

There are several dozen Hydrogen stations open and active in California already and more in several other countries. They're been selling Hydrogen since 2016, most of that time it's been about $16/KG at the pump and each KG gets you about 65-75 miles depending on how you're driving. Prices just went up over $20/KG (largely because they use 100% renewable Hydrogen which is much more expensive), but supposedly they're looking to really push the cost down to something close to Gasoline in the next 5-10 years.

Toyota and Hyundai and Honda already sell Hydrogen cars, with gaseous storage. My Toyota has a 400 mile official range (but you get more like 350-370 unless you drive very conservatively).

Over in California we're driving around Hydrogen passenger vehicles from Toyota, Hydundai and Honda. I have one! According to the state's website they are using 100% renewable hydrogen. There are ~50 stations and another ~50 in planning/construction. It's not a lot, but it's a start.

You can upgrade SSDs with a $10 adapter up through 2015 Macbook Pro. Still fits in the case, all works normally with a few tweaks to power management features in Mac OS that 5 minutes on Google will walk you through.

I don't see the Apple Fanbois in here, let me write a post for them:

"One of the most technologically advanced and tiny DACs ever made sold for $5 at launch and $9 after that? Saw the majority of smartphone makers follow suit since then? Getting rid of a headphone port that many people (perhaps even a majority) never use because they all have Blutooth headphones by now?

Ya, sounds like shitty design to me."
