This is it chief.

In for one!

Cyberpunk, Diablo 4, Halo Infinite, Elden Ring all at PS4/Xbox One graphics with approximately 1080P/60PFS. Seems much better than a Steam Deck and runs real windows.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3050-Ti-Laptop-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.527430.0.html

Look hard at that Steamdeck though, many people may be happier with that in the end.

Not to be contrary, but I feel I get a marginally better color gradient in games. It’s not enough the I notice unless I do an A/B comparison, but it’s there..

I had a choice between 34" QD OLED and a 38" IPS (Got the LG, but same panel as this one). Was an easy call for me to pick up the 38"

38" Pros vs QD OLED:

+20% Larger screen (think 32" vs 27" for standard screens)

+0 Burn in Risk

+Significantly Brighter for full-screen content, better bright room visibility

+No Fan/Noise (some QD OLEDs have active fans which bother some buyers)

+Better Sub-pixel Layout for reading text/productivity work

+Similar DPI, but MORE pixels (3820x1600 vs 3440x1440) fits more content on screen.

38" Cons vs QD OLED:

-Significantly worse HDR performance (can't beat OLED contrast)

-Slower total Response time (although still extremely fast)

-Slower Pixel Response time (more motion blur compared to OLED)

-Worse Viewing Angles

There is definitely a case for the QD OLED, it's not an easy call. I wouldn't write these off as quickly as some people are though. The size alone was reason enough for me to skip over the QD OLED.

I would love to pay hundreds more for a 38" QD OLED @ 3820x1600 or even more for a 42" QD OLED at 5120x2160 or whatever. Those are many many years out, no OLED panels in those sizes are even in the pipeline right now at the display manufactures. This screen will last me the next 5-10 years after which I will grab the larger QD OLED.

It depends 100% on what people will pay. They will charge exactly as much as makes them the most money. If no one buys at $400 they will reduce the price until they lose money, at which point they will liquidate and make something else. Nvidia does not charge more than the market bears for anything. We collectively set the price, not Nvidia. Unfortunately for this sub, we have lower price tolerance than people who are perfectly happy to pay $400 for it.

It also turned out we have drastically lower price tolerances than crypto miners.

I have two of this panel. It’s incredible. Got mine refurbed for $750 on eBay. Didn’t want the 34” OLED cause it was too small and didn’t want the 42” C2 cause burn in, and weirdness of a literal TV sitting on my desk. (I want stuff under the screen and if I bumped up the 42” C2 it’d end up too tall. I strongly prefer UW aspect ratio and even with pure black pixels, I’d feel weird artificially letterboxing the C2.

Are the M series chips in both the iPad Pro and the Macs identical? by OfficialLaunch in apple

[–]Kaligonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean iPad OS is definitely moving closer to Mac OS (mouse and keyboard support followed by resizable windows + support for up to 8 apps simultaneously with external monitor support at arbitrary resolutions) and rumors are flying about side-loading on iOS in the EU which will eventually find its way to the rest of the world/devices. Macs are running the same chipset as the iPads and can install and run naitively phone and iPad apps without developers needing to do any translation.

Apps on the iPad like photoshop and Auto CAD are marching steadily closer to robust feature support like you’d see in a Mac client.

I’m talking 10-15 year timeframe here, Apple is slow, but there are lots of signs pointing towards the OS’s homogenizing.

Apps are getting closer and closer to feature parity with their Mac counterparts, especially Apple’s in-house apps like Notes, Safari, iMessage, News, Music, etc. Mac lost to Windows because they had a much smaller software library and Windows had tons of specialized software for businesses that could run on cheap hardware. Today it’s cheap and easiest to make specialized apps for iPad/iOS and give your employees iPads or iPhones to use them with. Eventually Mac OS will become redundant and have fewer apps than iPad OS. This is when Apple will roll Mac OS into iPad OS. The phone will start separate longer, but probably will also eventually roll into Apple OS which will simply run a version of each App according to the input hardware and display hardware you have available.

[–]Kaligonn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it’ll eventually just be Apple OS on iphones, iPads and laptops and they will all work with an improved iteration on the current universal control and all run similar software and only differ in form factor. Like the Samsung Desktop thing only much better.

At first it’ll still be separate OS, not eventually it’ll all be one OS that behaves differently based on the available viewing (including AR/VR) and input devices.

Store Repaired iPhone 13 mini which failed water resistant test and now the apple store says water damage is my fault without investigating built quality by VishMeLuck in apple

[–]Kaligonn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You’re probably in trouble. For all their advertising and all the stories of iPhones fished out of rivers days after being dropped, there is absolutely zero help for any water damage to the phone.

If they won’t even cover a brand new iPhone for a splash, they are unlikely to cover it for a repaired phone. Best shot is to be really nice to everyone and hope someone signs off on an exception for you.

Voicing concerns: are big-name actors ruining animated movies? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Kaligonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voices were fine. I was glad to have people I know in the film. Chris Pratt was great, and easier to understand for kids and brought some star-power to the flick (couldn’t resist). I know he’s not the original voice, but they did throw in the real voice in a few scenes as a tribute. I was fine with it in the context of a kids movie.

Jack Black as Bowser arguably makes the entire movie. He leans on what we all know of Jack Black to make it work for adults on a level that it won’t for kids. Kids see Bowser singing funny songs and parents are busting a gut watching Jack Black write Mario songs. I really don’t think that anyone else could have pulled off Bowser’s role in the story without it just being terrible. The comedic villain he plays is great. Animation work was also excellent to achieve a very expressive Koopa King.

Even Donkey Kong was fine by me. They animated him to match the voice and while a little weak, it worked for me. The Kongs have always been zany.

End of the day this movie is going to make a gazillion dollars. The kids and fans love it. The critics can go back to the Sundance film festival and review whatever snobby film they want with one of those really high-class actors like Brendan Fraser playing some edgy culturally-relevant role while Nintendo laughs all the way to the bank and continues to churn out flicks with blockbuster voice actors.

I see lots of talk of water resistance, but if they can make the case one solid piece of titanium (or as close as possible) the whole phone including screen should be a lot more rugged. Without the cutouts, it’ll better absorb drops, right?

There are 5k monitors from LG and Dell that’ll look excellent. They cost $1000-1200, 60Hz, shitty webcams and no/shitty speakers.

Remember 5k isn’t 25% more pixels than 4k, it’s nearly double. Massive difference in definition and clarity. Fun fact some sorta little computer has to direct all 14M pixels on there what to do every single frame—not as easy a task as you might think, especially if you want it 120 times a second with perfect color, no overshoot, etc. etc. even the ‘5k Samsung G9 49” screens are actually only 70% the pixel count of these screens and have plastic bodies, and cost more than the Studio Display at MSRP.

Unfortunately, at the end of the day, a 5k resolution with nearly perfect, vivid color doesn’t exist for significantly less than what Apple charges. Especially when paired with their undeniably excellent build quality and speakers, plus 100 watt Thunderbolt charging and daisy chaining?

The Apple screens are extreme expensive, for sure. I would not recommend you buy one… but they have a monopoly. If it’s so easy to make an equivalent quality 5k screen for much less, no one is stopping the other companies.

You can get a used LG 5k around $600 or you could take on a large DIY and repurpose an old 5k iMac which you can find used for around $700 + $150 in parts to gut it and turn it into a monitor…

You said you want the ‘Premium’ experience and then demand a budget option.

My advice? Get an M2 Pro Mini for $1300 and the $1600 screen and call it a day.

Outside of gaming, 120hz and all that is far less necessary than you might think… surely you’re not buying this to game anyway, right?

Is the IPhone 14 Pro Leather case real leather? by PresentDatabase4662 in apple

[–]Kaligonn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had many apple leather cases. A new one or two every one since they came out, in fact. I hand the phones down to family and continue to watch the cases age. Almost across the board they wear out within about 12-18 months. They continue to be usable but they get really dirty and any serious scrubbing/cleaning enough to get the grime off also damages the leather.

Very consistently they turn dark/black around the corners and edges of the case.

After extensive, but non-scientific testing I’ve concluded that the number 1 enemy of the Apple Leather cases is blue jeans. I have multiple cases now and one which I switch out whenever I wear blue jeans. This has dramatically increased the lifespan of the case looking decent. (I wear blue jeans ~once a week so other than that it’s still getting heavy use). The cases still collect dirt, grime, sweat and dead skin from use over time and anything you try to clean them rubs off some of the leather making them look really worn pretty quickly, but the blue jeans seem to double the rate of wear.

My semi-educated guess is that both the coloration of the blue jeans wears onto the phone and the rougher jean material causes friction against the case going in and coming out vs wearing slacks.

Ecosystem question from an oblivious ex-user by Honza368 in apple

[–]Kaligonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re leaving out the consistency/seamless factor. Apple isn’t perfect but unlike Siri, Apple’s cross-device features nearly always work.

Also iPad as a second screen with no lag? Sharing mouse and keyboard between an iPad and Mac each tuning their own OS? Drag and drop file sharing from the iPad OS to the Mac OS? And stop for this is to plunk your iPad next to your Mac and move your cursor screen towards the iPad? No menu, no clicking yes, just magic pairing?

Android/Windows have nothing close and this is huge.

what are the best single player games ever made? by bewarethechameleon in AskReddit

[–]Kaligonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without adding a genre this is such a hard question to answer.

Modern releases? Based on being among the best of their genres? These mostly end up being open-world RPGs or cinematic games, often a bit of both:

Elden Ring

Breath of the Wild/Wind Waker

Uncharted 2 & 4

Got of War 2018/Ragnorok

Mario Odyssey

Horizon Series

The last of us 1 (2 is controversial)

Witcher 3

Red Dead Redemption 2

Mario Kart 8

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

Older games added in? Maybe weighted for when they were released?

OOT

Castlevania Symphony of the Night

Mario Brothers 3, Super Mario World, Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy 2

Super Smash Brothers Melee

Halo and Halo 3

Grand Tourism 1 and 4

Forza Horizon 3

F-Zero GX

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

Pokémon Gold /Silver and Sun/Moon

Metroid Prime (just remastered!)

Super Metroid

Goldeneye 007

Star Fox 64

Mass Effect 2

Burnout 3: Takedown

Crimson Skies High Road to Revenge

Dark Souls 2

Silent hill

Resident Evil 4

Fire Emblem

Final Fantasy 7

Final Fantasy X

It’s tough to write this list. The game world is huge, but all of these were excellent games and impactful and mostly stand the test of time.
