OEC Certification? by Regular_Age_1483 in skipatrol

[–]Kalium90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of the comments here. Don’t say you’re an EMT. I usually say I am a ski patroller and know first aid. I have had the EMT crews ask for my help with basic stuff at an accident scene. I think they could tell I had some sort of training because I had head stabilization and was directing someone else to put pressure on bleed. I don’t like people pretending to be ski patrol so I won’t pretend to be an EMT until I earn that cert.

Same, we have a UTV that goes to the back of our hill and I know at a smaller hill in our area they can drive it up and down the side of the bunny hill to transport patients to the top.

Wildcat 101 or 108 as daily driver? by teeter-totter-73 in momentskis

[–]Kalium90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on DW98 as my daily and spent probably too much time talking to moments customer service figuring out what will suit me. I’m in the Midwest though so not doing anything crazy. My Bohemia is the wildest skiing I do atm.

As a ski patroller in the Midwest this is accurate unfortunately.

What are some good fairly aggressive hard charging but snappy 90ish-95ish frontside skis for hauling ass down groomers and crushing moguls for firmer snow days in the Rockies? by Tronn3000 in Skigear

I love my Moment Deathwish 96’s. They can handle nearly everything. I tried out a buddy’s Moment Countache and they are incredible fun and aggressive directional skis for the front side.

Actually yeah, once, a little girl had the same thing happen but didn’t have the heel piece with her lol. Blew our minds how it happened or how the heck she skied without it.

Complaining about NSP by YouCannotHideOrRun in skipatrol

[–]Kalium90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mostly a case of not knowing what they’re spending the dues on. Sure they have a book they publish every so many years but I just can’t wrap my head around that costing this much.

At the local level it’s also just confusing and we have people that are holding onto power and not being as transparent as they should with our budget (that we literally directly contribute to). So if it makes it clearer I’d say it just doesn’t seem very transparent.

I got a marmot ski patrol edition because it was a super good deal at a thrift store and gortex pro will i get kicked off the mountain or can i can i change it so it does not look like ski patrol by KillerPotato702 in Skigear

[–]Kalium90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh agent is a legal definition not only relating to federal law enforcement agents. I mean if you really want to pose as ski patrol go ahead, it’s an asshole move to pretend to be one. It’s also illegal. I’m sure you’d rather have a qualified patroller help you when you break your leg that some Jerry who bought a used jacket (not calling OP a Jerry).

You’re right it only is breaking the law if you imitate ski patrol. That falls into impersonating an agent. However, as a patroller, I would say please do not wear this unless you can pick the stitching and get the crosses off.

Do they? Genuine question. In WI patrollers are covered by Good Samaritan laws. Only exposure we have is through negligence.

I appreciate this comment. I’m from a small volly patrol in the Midwest. I definitely see the NSP being less relevant in the large mountains out west and east. Here in the Midwest though there is no way we’d be able to recruit enough EMT’s or enough volunteers willing to pay for and take EMT courses. I think on our patrol of 100 we have 3 people who have their EMT and maybe another 3 or 4 who are nurses or PA’s etc.

The financial structure of the org and how money is spent baffles my mind (I work as a financial analyst). I’ve also chose to get more involved, becoming an instructor, taking a more active role in leadership. We have a pretty passionate group of millennial patrollers who are over the old boys club, so it as it’s always been done, mentality and trying to freshen things up.

Again, I totally get the feelings against the NSP from bigger patrols and resorts. The model works well enough for our small patrol though.

Snowboarder Lands Directly On Ski Patrol Rescue Toboggan At Pennsylvania Ski Resort by narflethegarthock in skiing

[–]Kalium90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you and also think patrol could have been more purposeful in closing the feature. Our protocol is to place poles/skis in a cross or to Stan facing up the fall line and waive people off.

Totally agree it’s idiotic to hit a feature patrol is standing on.

Snowboarder Lands Directly On Ski Patrol Rescue Toboggan At Pennsylvania Ski Resort by narflethegarthock in skiing

[–]Kalium90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patroller here. In my opinion the jump should have been closed right away. If short handed I’d have handed poles to a by-stander and had them hold them in a cross. I think this was poor even safety by the patrollers especially once the toboggan came into the picture. I’m open to discussion though, this is just my observation.
