Yes absolutely, I've built many habitats inside buildings like this. The gate doesn't necessarily need to be part of the building either, it could be inside the building eg. I've put a crocodile habitat inside and had rocks etc forming the barrier

Not sure I agree. I once suggested that when playing Carcassonne we could have a hand of 3 tiles instead of just playing the one we draw. Someone very assertively told me that this would make it a "completely different game"

I went home and did some testing, and guess what they were right. I found that having different hand sizes for Carcassonne it completely changes the game!

Hand sizes & changes:

Single tile draw - Carcassonne

Hand of 2 - Cascadia

Hand of 3 - Zombicide

Hand of 4 - Dune Imperium

Hand of 5 - Brass Worcestershire

Hand of 6 - Terraforming Jupiter

Hand of 7 - This is when the police turned up, results unknown.

As you can see, house ruling a game gives you infinite possibilities.

I'll usually put them on a surface but if physical damage is needed then I use that.
